Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Missouri-Rolla," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Missouri-Rolla in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Missouri-Rolla when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Missouri-Rolla, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this series!
Having discovered the Off the Beaten Path series while planning a vacation to South Dakota, I didn't hesitate to pick up the Missouri copy to see what I was missing in my backyard. I'm really glad I did! Even though I've discovered many things since moving to Missouri, this book has helped me discover quite a few new places to explore. The book has broken Missouri into concise geographical sections, so when planning a trip, you only have to look at the section of the state where you'll be travelling. The usual topics of lodging shopping, and restaurants are covered very well, but what I find most interesting are the little-known cultural artifacts highlighted in the book. If you're planning a trip to Missouri, or live here and want to discover more of your home state, this book is highly recommended. One warning though: you'll never look at any interstate, especially I-70, the same again!! ... Read more

Product Description
Over the next half century, the human population, divided by culture and economics and armed with weapons of mass destruction, will expand to nearly 9 billion people. Abrupt climate change may throw the global system into chaos; China will emerge as a superpower; and Islamic terrorism and insurgency will threaten vital American interests. How can we understand these and other global challenges? Harm de Blij has a simple answer: by improving our understanding of the world's geography.De Blij demonstrates how geography's perspectives yield unique and penetrating insights into the interconnections that mark our shrinking world. Centuries ago a surge of climate change halted China's maritime plans; more recently, environmental calamity altered the course of geopolitical events in East Asia; today, terrorists look for failed and malfunctioning states to base their operations--and some of these are in our own hemisphere.Preparing for climate change, averting a cold war with China, defeating terrorism: all of this requires geographic knowledge. In Why Geography Matters, de Blij makes an urgent call to restore geography to America's educational curriculum. He shows how and why the U.S. has become the world's most geographically illiterate society of consequence--and demonstrates that this geographic illiteracy is a direct risk to America's national security. In this personal and engaging book, de Blij provides a geographer's perspective on the challenges of this new century. As he states, "We are crossing the threshold to a century that will witness massive environmental change, major population shifts, persistent civilizational conflicts [and] while geographic knowledge by itself cannot solve these problems, they will not be effectively approached without it." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative
Though this book can be a little tedious (it's rather technical; I did have to read it for a class), it is actually quite informative and interesting. The author generally does a good job of avoiding touchy political demonstrations, however his opinions regarding global warming and evolution are there if you are looking hard enough. It is not in your face in any way; he offers strong evidence and insight into matters of geography that I never knew before. An enriching and interesting book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well written book
that provides not just food but rather a feast for thought. This book will vastly improve one's understanding of the world today.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Interesting, but No New Insights
Blij tells readers that improving our understanding of the world's geography is key to understanding the key challenges of the next half-century:Population growth to nearly 9 billion, climate change possibly causing chaos, China's emergence as a superpower, and Islamic terrorism threats for America.Unfortunately, Blij's efforts to convince us of the need to re-emphasize geography fails.

A globe tells us that most of the earth's surface is water or ice, and much of the land is mountains or desert. It also tells us that the Northern Hemisphere countries dominate the world because most of the habitable territory is north of the Equator.

All titles and other legal documents in the U.S. have been expressed in English measures - converting to metric would be impractical.

Assuming you are in North America, the room you are in will move about 1/2" in the next year; over a geologic time of 1 million years it will move 8 miles.

About 200 years ago the Earth's population was only about 900 million, reaching 1 billion in 1820.Another 110 years was required to double (2M), and only 45 more years to double again (4M in 1975).Blij anticipates doubling again by 2035, reflecting a slower growth rate. However, Blij reports that it is important to look at the data for individual countries.

Increasing lifespans adds another important dimension.Currently 35 of every 100 in Europe are of pensionable age, and this will rise to 75 by 2050.

Blij sees Sunni Muslims as a greater potential terrorism problem due to their decentralized nature, vs. Shiites (ayatollahs, imams).Haiti and Paraguay in South America, and Sudan and Somalia in Africa are potential future terrorist hotbeds - large Muslim population, weak states.

Russia remains the largest territory, almost twice the size of #2 Canada.Having 13 neighbors, and lying roughly entirely north of Boston are problems for it.If trends continue it will have a mere 100 million population by 2050.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read for anyone
I teach AP Human Geography and every time I pick this book up I find a little more to share with my students. Of course, I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the world today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Geography Does Matter
Why Geography Matters is a well-researched and written book by an expert in the field, but the subtitle is a bit misleading. Sure, the book covers the three threats the author claims are confronting the United States, namely climate change, a growing China and global terrorism, but it also covers geology and the history of the world from the beginning of time. The author also spends considerable amounts of time with chapters on the European Union, Russia as well as Africa. While there are some insights and useful information contained in the book, the arguments tend to be articulated better in other sources. I wholeheartedly agree that geography is a critical discipline that does not often get the respect it deserves, but this book is not the final authority when it comes to geo-politics and the current state of the world. ... In Common Fields, environmental historian Andrew Hurley has gathered thirteen original essays to tell a compelling story of one city's history. It is a story built on the never-ending tension between urban growth and environmental sustainability - a tension that defines the fate not just of St. Louis, but of cities around the world. In these pages, geographers, archaeologists, and historians come together to consider the enduring ties between a city's diverse residents and the physical environment on which their well-being depends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A GREAT WAY FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES TO LEARN ABOUT THEIR STATE!
This book is simply well done.I must say though, it is a bit misleading as it is not a simple ABC book even though it is set up in that particular format. It is so very, very much more. The author and illistrator have given us a wonderful oversite of a wonderful state, starting with prehistory and working forward to the present. The emphasis is on the outdoors of course, as Missouri, if nothing else, is an outdoor kind of place. The cities too have been well covered though, so there is something for everyone here. This book contains some pretty sophisticated information so, for the younger child, it might be a good idea to use this as a "read-a-long" book. The art work is great and quite detailed and fits the text perfectly.I have to admit, even though I am a native of this state, have lived here many years, I too, learned quite a few facts that I was unaware of.For an informative, well designed and fun to read book, I do recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This book is not only entertaining and educational for kids, but for adults, too! The artwork is lovely to the eye and I'm looking forward to getting more of these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A is for A+
What a wonderful idea for a series of books. This is one of 50 alphabet books; there is one for every state. This one is packed with beautiful illustrations which contain hidden symbols, poetry, and tons of "unique to Missouri" facts.Don't just buy this one....collect them all. They are sure to be a valuable resource for teachers and parents alike.Despite it's ABC format, it is intended for all age groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book On Missouri For Both Kids And Adults!
This book is GREAT! As a school teacher, I'm delighted to have this book in my classroom. As a parent, I'm delighted to have it at home. It's an alphabet book, a poetry book, a textbook, and an art book all in one! Though I have lived in Missouri all my life, I sure learned some new things by reading S is for Show Me. I learned about the Kimmswick Bone Beds where mastodons used to live. I learned that nearly all corncob pipes in the world are made in Washington, MO! I learned about caves, springs, animals, ice cream cones, the Pony Express, the Civil War and so much more. This book should be read over and over because there is so much information that it just can't be absorbed in the initial reading. The illustrations are beautiful. Many of the paintings contain hidden details that my kids love to search for. The poems are fun to read aloud to young children and give them just enough information to spark their curiosity. But each page also has a sidebar of text that provides more in-depth information for older children and adults. S is for Show Me crosses all age barriers. I highly recommend this book to young and old alike, to anyone who is interested in the great state of Missouri!

5-0 out of 5 stars Retired children's librarian LOVES this book!
S is for Show Me fulfills a need of which librarians have been aware a long time. Finally here is a book that provides a great amount of information about the state of Missouri in an easy-to-read format all ages can enjoy. The magnificent illustrations develop great interest in the excellent poetry and interesting research material. Adults as well as children will gain much knowlege of Missouri from this informative and enlightening book. I cannot praise S is for Show Me too highly! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Details and Archival Photos
Interesting book! Lots of pictures that bring history to life. Lots of details, some of which I have not seen elsewhere. Extensive coverage of the Camp Jackson affair, U. S. Grant, and General Sherman. Brief biographies of notable people buried in local cemeteries.

The details are not always reliable. For example, on page 9 it says that U. S. Grant was promoted to captain on the same day that he resigned from the army at Fort Humboldt: 11 April 1854. But you don't promote someone who is resigning to preempt being sacked. Granthad been a captain for some time when he drank himself out of the army in 1854. But enough of nitpicking. Most of the details are valid and well sourced.

This book is arranged chronologically around historic sites: mansions, prisons, military camps, arsenals, cemeteries, hospitals, statues, memorials, etc. Sites in Alton, Illinois, also are included. Some of the sites are now paved over, but others are still there to see. Up-to-date directions are provided, but one need not be near St. Louis to enjoy this book.

Not recommended to elderly readers because the type is small.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
If you live near St. Louis, you should read this book and then take a tour of the sites that still exist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good info from several angles
This book is a coffee table-sized paperback. Printing and binding are good quality.

The design of the book is such that it can be used as an on-site tour guide to Civil War St. Louis. Current directions, locations, and street names are given along with War era descriptions of the sites.Significant places are described--what existed then as well as what is onthe site now. Also the burial locations of important people from both sidesare given with biographical information about them.

Now, if you're notplanning a trip to St. Louis, it's still good reading. I enjoyed thenarrative style and found much useful information. It also helped put ingeographical perspective places I'd been reading about. Lots of good photosand maps. It's a well-done book. Indexed and footnoted. ... Read more

Product Description

The 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair was a major event in early-twentieth-century America. Attracting millions of tourists, it exemplified the Victorian predilection for public spectacle. The Fair has long served as a touchstone for historians interested in American culture prior to World War I and has endured in the memories of generations of St. Louis residents and visitors. In Whose Fair? James Gilbert asks: what can we learn about the lived experience of fairgoers when we compare historical accounts, individual and collective memories, and artifacts from the event?

Exploring these differing, at times competing, versions of history and memory prompts Gilbert to dig through a rich trove of archival material. He examines the papers of David Francis, the Fair’s president and subsequent chief archivist; guidebooks and other official publications; the 1944 film Meet Me in St. Louis; diaries, oral histories, and other personal accounts; and a collection of striking photographs. From this dazzling array of sources, Gilbert paints a lively picture of how fairgoers spent their time, while also probing the ways history and memory can complement each other.

Trace your family tree as far back as you can to find out everyone's nationalities--and then "publish" your results on a batik banner. Carry on an ancient tradition by making a classic clay bowl. Rat-a-tat-tat: Can you hear the rhythm? Sure you can, because drums are the universal sound of music. Make one out of cardboard and bang a beat. Treat your taste buds to Chinese Five-Spice Popcorn, French Pain au Chocolat (that's chocolate bread to you!), Nigerian Fruit Salad, and German Pretzels. Take a citizenship quiz, watch your world manners, and discover how people from other lands hear animal sounds. For parents there are informative sidebars, with fun facts and activities that will help you answer all those questions the kids are sure to ask.and you might not know the answers to. While children are enjoying themselves, they'll learn firsthand how the things they do can make a real difference to our planet!

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute gem
My four year old son and I love this book. It is absolutely choked full of terrific projects and activities that he and I can do together. There are a number of activities that will be more appropriate for an older child, but we've had a terrific time doing things like making "deep maps", creating three dimensional landscapes, and designing a treasure map that is soaked in tea leaves to make it look ancient. The directions are easy to follow, the materials used are simple and inexpensive, and the ideas sparkle with originality. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars magnificent
This is a fantastic step by step approach to learning through INTELLIGENT craft activities. No more growing been shoots, like we've all done 100 times before. This book is full of thought provoking, challenging, unusual craft ideas about the world. It is aimed at late primary to early high school aged kids, but I enjoyed the activities as much as my kids did. We have used almost all of the activities in this book, from making our own mud bricks to the creating a dream travel box. The lay out is fantastic with lots of photo's. I want more books like this please. ... Read more
