A lively read by a knowledgeable author
Missouri's central geographic location makes it a place where climate, and flora and fauna of the north, south, east, and west overlap. Cultures too come together here in an often overlapped and conflicted way. Not easy to write about. Sean McLachlan's "Missouri: An Illustrated History" is a highly readable account of the complicated human history that has played out here from Paleo Indian times to the present. It's a brisk read that does justice to a state that has a distinct literary and political identity. Non-native readers will get a feel for the authentic place. Natives will find this a fresh account of Missouri's rich past.

Great History Lesson
If you enjoy reading history then you'll enjoy this book.Especially, of course, if your from St. Louis or have a particular interest in the city itself and its surrounding area.

Incredibly dense.
Though obviously well written and deeply researched, Lion of the Valley is so incredibly dense it's a challenge to read. Every page is so packed with tiny factoids about people, associations, political developments, bond issues, etc., that only a few topics rise above the clutter to stick with the reader. (I found myself frequently going back a page or two to reestablish the identity of a person, place or thing.) But then again, in covering 200+ years of history, how does one limit the subject matter?

Having read other city-specific histories (namely, Chicago and NYC), I view Lion as more of a textbook than an engaging narrative. Informative, enlightening, yes. But not an easy read.

Superb
This is simply one of the best books I have read on the history of a city.Not a simple tour of neighborhoods, architecture or ethnic groups that settled in various enclaves of the city, but rather a comprehensive andintelligent look at a city from its earliest days, placed against thebackdrop of its development in the region and history.the only comparablebook on a city that i have read which is better from an economic andregional development standpoint is nature's metropolis about chicago.onewonders why we do not have more gems like these about all american cities. perhaps we would take better care of our hometowns if we knew more abouttheir past from a thoughtful perspective.anyway, lion of the valley issuperb.

It is now the chief means of identifying settlers who were inMissouri prior to the first and second censuses of 1830 and 1840. Well Worth Reading
My first association with Jon E. Taylor was at a book signing we were both attending at Borders in Lee's Summit Mo. about a year ago.I am typically not too interested with history, and especially history books.But after visiting with him, I became curious about his writing.

Much to my surprise, I found his book very hard to put down.It's well written and easy to follow.I must admit that I was born in Independence, so that made it even more appealing.The book covers the RLDS Church (Community of Christ), with headquarters in Independence, MO.; President Truman, who resided in Independence; and the Three Trails: Santa Fe, Oregon, and California, in such a manner that it is all brought to life in a very exciting way. I was made aware of the rich history that was made in Independence, that for years and years seemed not to be cherished and capitalized on. It was truly eye-opening.

The writing is interesting and not boring in any way.The book is expensive, but in my opinion it is well worth reading. ... Read more
