Editorial Review Product Description "This volume of A History of Missouri is a solid piece of scholarship. The coverage is sensible. Indeed, the book is what it purports to be, a thorough-going history of the Show-me State, and it exhibits a good feeling for the state and its people."--Journal of Southern History |

Editorial Review Product Description "[Kirkendall] addresses other issues that generally receive inadequate attention in volumes of this type. His treatment of the role of women during the crucial years of his study is admirable. Likewise, his analysis of black life in Missouri during those years is important. Not only does he document and describe the oppression faced by blacks, he also writes at length about their creative response. Kirkendall is at his best when writing about the jazz culture that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s in Kansas City. . . . This book is a valuable addition to the literature on Missouri history."--Journal of Southern History "Kirkendall has provided a solidly researched and thoroughly written history of Missouri from 1919 to 1953. It will provide an excellent reference for the study of the economic and political affairs that affected Missouri during more than three decades of rapid change. Kirkendall's study should be a part of every library with a collection on the history of the trans-Mississippi West."--Indiana Magazine of History |

Editorial Review Product Description The epic tale of Missouri's history from ancient times to today is related here in a concise, accessible format--from the Native American cultures to the territorial period; from the agony of the Civil War to the freewheeling era of jazz and Prohibition; and from 20-century labor and Civil Rights struggles to the triumph of the St. Louis Arch.Descriptions of many of these tumultuous times come from Missourians themselves, the reporters, generals, and everyday people who set down their observations of this great state and the events that made it what it is today. With more than 80 illustrations, photographs, and maps, Missouri: An Illustrated History, examines Missouri's changing economy, geography, industries, and immigrant populations, bringing the past and present vividly to life. Editorial Review Product Description To begin the preface to the second edition of Lion of the Valley,James Neal Primm quotes the Reverend W. C. Bitting: "A city is morethan an assemblage of buildings with streets between them. It has asoul, and an atmosphere, and a social significance to which all materialthings should be made to minister." If a history book can help definethat atmosphere and significance, Lion of the Valley has done so for St. Louis, telling the story of a vibrant and unusual American city in an engaging yet scholarly manner. Primm establishes a general historicalnarrative of St. Louis from Pierre Laclede's first step from the bow of abateau to the prototypes of MetroLink. As in most comprehensiveaccounts, Lion of the Valley focuses on the central institutionsand personalities that have shaped the city, as well as the events andcircumstances that brought fame, or fear, to the citizens of St. Louis. The Great Fire of 1849; the 1904 World's Fair; the machinations of the"Big Cinch"; the construction of the Gateway Arch; these and many otherepisodes from the city's colorful past come to life in the pages ofPrimm's book. This newly designed fourth edition offers anew preface from the author and a revised and expanded index in orderto make the book more reader friendly, while maintaining the integrityof the original text. It will be indispensable to students of St. Louishistory as well as amateurs interested in the development of this greatcity. Customer Reviews (3)
Great History Lesson
Incredibly dense. Having read other city-specific histories (namely, Chicago and NYC), I view Lion as more of a textbook than an engaging narrative. Informative, enlightening, yes. But not an easy read.
