Its main campus is in Kansas City's Rockhill neighborhood east of the Country Club Plaza. It is a part of the University of Missouri System. The school has its roots in the Lincoln and Lee University movement first put forth by the Methodist Church and its Bishop Ernest Lynn Waldorf in the 1920s. The proposed university (which was to honor Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Marching Mizzou was founded in 1885, originally as a military-styled band with its membership drawn from the school's old Corps of Cadets. The band made only one appearance that season, at a football game againstKansas, and was so well received by the assembled students and alumni that they were asked back to the next season's football games. The Corps obliged, and the band over doubled in numbers by 1886.
