Product Description
Lonely City

A tangly-haired, purple-eyed girl named Witch Baby lives in glitzy L.A. She loves a guy named Angel Juan. When he leaves for New York she knows she must find him.

Looking For Love

So she heads for the city of glittery buildings and garbage and Chinese food and drug dealers and subways and kids playing hip-hopscotch.

Finding Trouble

Her clues are an empty tree house in the park, a postcard on the street, a mannequin in a diner. Angel Juan is in danger, and only Witch Baby's heart-magic can make him safe.

When Angel Juan leaves L. A.—and Witch Baby—to play his music and find himself in New York, Witch Baby, wild and restless without him, follows. The story that ensues "is an engagingly eccentric mix of fantasy and reality, enhanced—this time—by mystery and suspense. It is also magical, moving and mischievous, and—literally—marvelous."—SLJ.

One of kids' favorite characters in Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Batseries is Witch Baby: a tangly haired, purple-eyed girl who can curl her toes intocashew shapes. She's a bit of an outsider, more in touch with feelings andportents than the rest of the gang from Shangri-L.A. In Witch Baby andMissing Angel Juan, we're able to watch Witch Baby work through some of her feelings of alienation. Her willingness to explore darker emotional realms is a real inspiration, and, in fact, she seems more evolved and "whole" than the others. In Missing Angel Juan, Witch Babyfinally finds a way to create her own sense of belonging. She finds out moreabout her history and her unique needs to push through some of the shyness andmoodiness that has always kept her separate from others. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For every fan of "tru wuv", your love is my drug, I will die without you YA romance. It's time for you to wake up.
For every fan of the new modern love triangle, "tru wuv", your love is my drug, I will diewithout you YA romance novels that have been published recently I humbly beg and plead for you to read this book. It's time for you to wake up.

Missing Angel Juan is a fantastical, magical, fairy tale story that addresses some very real emotions, needs and addictions of a teen couple who separate through their fear and addiction to love.

Angel Juan leaves to try and find himself. He feels like he is only an object to be loved and used like a drug, he feels like he is being suffocated in this unhealthy, clinging, I-will-die-without-you relationship and wants to go and find himself. He fears love as well for those reasons.

Witch Baby feels lost and alone without him. She loves him, she needs him and she doesn't understand why he went away. She leaves school and follows her (older, out of school) boyfriend to New York to try and find him. She starves herself and pines and discards everything and everyone in her life to track down her other half. That's when both Angel Juan and Witch Baby discover things they never expected. Witch Baby meets up with her step mother's father Charlie Bat (a ghost that only she can see, by the way) and Angel Juan meets up with someone far more sinister (if you can believe it).

They both have a lot of lessons to learn. She needs to learn to use herself to find happiness through music and art and life. She needs to learn to love, but also to let go. He needs to learn the same lessons about finding and using himself for his own happiness, and also how to love and be loved in return. They both need to learn about how to form a healthy relationship and how to be happy both together and apart.

With each new book in Dangerous Angels Francesca Lia Block gets better and better. Witch Baby was always her most well rounded and vivid character and she really comes into her own in this novel. I loved reading about Witch Baby's take on New York and about the magic she finds on every street corner, whether in soho, central park, or the meat packing district. The language sparkles and really brings the world and characters to life.

The message is also one that you hear precious little of in YA romance today and it's one I would like to see more of. I want to see girls forming healthy relationships, getting out of or changing unhealthy ones, changing unhealthy mindsets, and having enough self respect to draw the line even if it feels like it's going down your middle. Most importantly I want to see them learning the difference between love and need and addiction and seeing that they are not all one and the same. This book does just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars If your heart is a broken teacup ,,
First sentence:"Angel Juan and I walk through a funky green fog."

When Angel Juan leaves for New York, a shattered Witch Baby follows him and finds angels and uncles, ghosts and monsters. One of these ghosts accompanies her through the city, with her camera showing her what's truly happening despite appearances. There are treehouses and shivering cold, feasts and Ferris wheels, museums and menacing mannequins. Block articulates the pain and panic of loss so beautifully, so poetically, so wrenchingly deeply.

Another in the beautiful Weetzie Bat series ... If your heart is "a teacup covered with hairline cracks," or if your teacup heart has already broken into jagged pieces, this book will show you how to save yourself.

Missing Angel Juan is easily my favorite Francesca Lia Block book. i loved witch baby from the moment i first read about her, way back in Weetzie Bat. i enjoyed watching her grow, and now her story of love, lonlieness, and redemption takes center stage, in this beautifully written book. her feelings of loss over angel juan's departure are easy to relate to, as is her restlessness in a city of dangerous angels. her exodus to new york is both transcendant and haunting, and left me both satisfied and shaken. perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the book is the character Cake, if only because such a thing could really happen. in all, it's one of the best books i've ever read, though far too short, and it left me screaming out for more, though grateful that i'd had the privelege of reading it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mary is Missing...
I enjoyed the Sweet Valley Twins series in elementary school, and I read them all the time! I enjoyed this one in particular. It's so suspenseful and the reader wants to know what will happen. In the story, the twins' friend, Mary, has been missing from school. Mary's mother isn't saying anything to anyone about where she is. (True--she would NOT be that secretive in real life, but hey! It makes an exciting story) The twins find all sorts of clues that lead them to believe Mary is kidnapped. Eventually, they discover it's someone else who has been kidnapped, and she needs their help! It's a fun book to read, and I think it's worth a try!

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Story
The story is NOT well-written. The plot is weak. I mean, come on. Mary's mother wouldn't be that secretive in real life, would she? Especially not to Mary's friends. Also, it's a bit unrealistic that Mary's friends jump tothe conclusion that Mary was kidnapped. Wouldn't they do a little moreresearch? Not a good Sweet Valley Twins book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mystery of the Missing Peanuts
For the past two weeks Mickey the zookeeper has been having a problem. Someone keeps stealing peanuts from the storeroom. The only opening besides the locked door is a small crack in the wall. To solve this mystery Mickey calls in Detective Donald. When Donald arrives, he first denies all offers of help, given by Mickey and Chip and Dale, two chipmunks. He then tries to figure out who is stealing the peanuts by having each animal try to get at them through the crack, but none of the animals can reach them. His next brilliant idea is to rig a trap so that the thief will have to step in blue paint and will set off a bell when he tries to steal the peanuts. During the night, the bell goes off, he wakes up, and he sees eight footprints in the paint. He then rushes off to visit the octopus, and is disappointed to find out that octopuses don't like peanuts. Mickey then suggests that the prints may have been made by two four-footed animals, and Donald rushes off. This time he gets it right; the thieves are Chip and Dale. They had been taking peanuts and storing them up for winter in their burrow. Now they work for Mickey sweeping the park, and get all the peanuts they can eat.

The book has cute bright pictures. I am really fond of Donald's classic detective outfit, complete with bag. The story is told in a very straightforward manner, and flows nicely. I think it is adorable the way Donald keeps rushing off on a new way to find the thief when the chipmunks keep offering to help him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Juvenile fiction at its' best
This is an example of modern juvenile sports fiction book at its finest. The Sonics baseball team is integrated, both racially and in terms of gender. The girls are described as some of the best players on the team and they work together well. However, on the eve of the game against a very strong team, their star pitcher Sam is absent. They start the game and the team members try to solve the problem while battling against their strong opponents. Finally, after some deep thought and following a few false leads, they learn that some of the members of the other team locked Sam in a closet. Once they confess, Sam is freed and he returns in time to help his team win.
One major advantage of this book is that it combines two of the winning formulas for juvenile fiction: sports and mysteries. Furthermore, the mystery part is not one of danger as in Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. The plot is such that there is no evil; Sam was locked up for as much as a prank as anything else. One of the difficulties of having evil men and danger in juvenile fiction is that the plot must have some form of plausible device where young people can challenge powerful and dangerous adults and triumph. I have told my daughter that this is a book she should consider reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun light-hearted mystery
Jennifer-the-Jerk Is Missing wastes no time getting started. Right in the first chapter, we are introduced to the characters, and it isn't long before the mystery starts.

13 year old Amy hates babysitting Malcolm, a bratty 8-year-old who, according to his parents, has a habit of making up stories and telling lies. When Malcolm witnesses what he thinks is the kidnapping of his classmate, even brattier 8-year-old Jennifer Smith, Amy takes it in stride, considering not only Malcolm's reputation for making things up, but also the fact that what he witnessed had a perfectly logical explanation. Further investigation, along with much arguing with Malcolm, ultimately proves that he's right, and she finally jumps into action to try to set things right.

This is a pretty fun little story. There's a lot of personality in the characters. Malcolm is a constant brat, first rejecting Amy and telling her that he doesn't have to do anything she tells him, and that he's going to do things on his own. Afraid of getting in trouble with Malcolm's strict parents as well as her own, she follows along, even as she tries to reign him in and keep him out of trouble. Both characters are trying to do the right thing, except for a while, both believe the right thing is something different. Malcolm believes fervently that he witnessed a kidnapping and he must stop it, while Amy thinks Malcolm made the whole thing up and it's her duty to stop him from getting out of hand.

Once Malcolm's fears are proven true, however, Amy quickly leaps to his side. Since the police don't believe them (due to Malcolm's many tall tales in the past), the two take it upon themselves to rescue Jennifer.

What was rather unexpected is that the mood shifts once they get there. The book starts out mostly suspenseful, with dashes of character humor sprinkled throughout the proceedings. Once they reach the kidnappers' hideout, the story changes. The suspense ramps up considerably, but the humor ramps up even more, overshadowing the suspense.

Jennifer is just as bratty as Malcolm said she was. Tied to a chair and gagged, she actually laughs beneath her gag at Amy and Malcolm's first failed attempt to rescue her. She is very ungrateful, unrealistically so to the point of character comedy, but truth be told, this is part of what makes the story so fun.

I liked this book a lot. I like suspense, and I don't mind humor if it doesn't necessarily get in the way of the story. Thankfully, it mostly didn't. While the characters did act rather unrealistically at times, particularly in regards to the dialog coming from the kidnappers, I felt the character humor worked pretty well. It mostly added flavor to the characters and lightened the mood, but didn't take too much away from the suspense. The solutions to problems are fairly improbable, but then again, it's just that type of story. Once you appreciate it for what it is, the story is pretty enjoyable.

Overall, a pretty fun read. Recommended for anyone who'd like a more light-hearted mystery/adventure story.

I LOVED Jennifer-the-Jerk Is Missing!I loved how Carol Gorman used comedy and adventure with a little bit of suspense. I finished this amazing book in two hours because it was so good. 5-0 out of 5 stars Touching and Beautiful
I read this book years ago, and I still remember it as one of the few books that completely changed my life. I'd never read about a young girl who'd been abandoned by her father before, and reading this helped me come to terms with my own life without my father. Jessie is a strong girl who's raised by two equally strong women: her mother and her mother's aunt. Even though she has a great family and friends, she still feels that something profoundly important is missing from her life: her father. She tries to track him down, but though she never gets the answers she wants, she learns to appreciate the life she has and continue to be the best person she can be regardless of her past. I could really relate to this book and I think other people who grew up without a mother or father will find Jessie's story intriguing and moving.

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing Pieces
This book is a bout a 14 year old girl name Jesse Welles and she lives with her mom and her aunt Vis.Her father James Welles had abandoned her and her mother when Jesse was only a few months old. They don't know why he left but he never came back.Jesse is trying to find her father, so she looks in the phone books for the last names Welles. Then she found a Dennis Welles which lived in Myrtle and she finds out Dennis is her father's cousin.Later Jesse and her mother gets into an argument because her mother doesn't want Jesse to find her father then get hurt just like she did.But Jesse didn't listen to her mom she went off to Myrtle with a boy name Jack Kettle who's Mary beth's crush.Jesse never found her father though but if she had she wanted to tell him who she was and who's she's grown up to be without him in her life.
I think this book was good because it tells how she's going through without her dad and stuff it's really sad but interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing Pieces found
This was my first NFM book, and it made me a fan of her other stories as well. It's about a strong teenage girlnamed Jessie who was searching for her father that abandoned her family years ago. She had a mostly good life otherwise- a loving mother, aunt, friends, and a boyfriend- but she wasmissing that one important person. This problem affected her otherrelationships, for better or worse. I liked the book, except for twoproblems. First, Jessie went steady with her best friend's crush. I reallyfelt for Meadow on that one.Second, the eventual reunion between her andher father wasn't as I'd expected. But everybody makes mistakes, and weknow she'll find her dad again. Overall, I reccomend this book to otherteenagers who love to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pieces MIssing
Jessie's story, told in the book Missing Pieces, is awesome! The beginning of the book starts with Jessie's mother, Maribeth, telling a young Jessie of the child's life story. Jessie's father, James, left Jessie and her mom went she was little. Jessie now a teenager, is searching for the missingpieces in her life concerning her father. Along the way of searching,Jessie has troubles with school, friends, and her family, like all theproblems any other teen has to deal with. The ending, I am not quite sure Ilike. It ends with an unexpected ending, that is more real life then thehappy ending of most books. My favorite character was Aunt Zis. Zis was anold, forgetful women who helped Jessie with some of her problems. Theauthor, Norma Fox Mazer, did a great job of portraying a teens strugglesand problems. Missing Pieces is mainly a drama, but is romantic and sad attimes. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and give it a must read forteen girls!

4-0 out of 5 stars A fourteen year old girl learns about her true feelings.
Missing Pieces was a good book overall.Norma Fox Mazer did a wonderful job describing real-life scenarios that many children experience.I recommend this book to children who can relate to the many feelings kids of one parent families feel. The book addresses many feelings and situationsthat are very real to today's teenager. One thing I did notice, however, was that throughout the story, Jessie seemed to be doing the same thingover and over again. Actually, that took away from the story.I found thestory enjoyable enough to keep me turning the pages, but it didn't havecliffhangers or some other elements I like to find in stories. ... This book was extremely detailed and that's good but I felt that there was to much time spent on the details and not enough on the relationship between the two characters. At times, I was tempted to put it down because whenever Shanna took a bath it was described in detail. The chemistry between Shanna and Craig was minimal and the usual tension was missing. And although I believe in family, there was way too much family in this book. This is the second book I've read by Ms. Dickerson and I'm hesitant to buy another.Missing Link lacked that certain something that I look for when reading a romance novel.

This was a very entertaining and well-illustrated book - full of subtle, and not-so-subtle puns that entertains adults and kids alike.Makes your mouth water for some greasy fried grasshoppers. My kid's favorite line is now "The 'I' stands for...I'll be waiting!"Great book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE IN 3RD GRADE!
I am in third grade and this book is soooo easy to read and I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Journey
My introduction to Maguire was through "Wicked"; only later did I realize he began his career as a writer of children's literature.Finding "Missing Sisters" was a revelation: here is a writer who understands how children think, feel, wonder about life, live in the moment, and are so full of potential. This sweet story of a handicapped orphan finding her family -- and herself -- was charming for me as an adult and I expect would be captivating and honest for a child. Two moments stand out:the tender scene where the young girl is praying (and so humorously explains her understanding of the personalities of Jesus and Mary); and the singing contest (where the confusion over her identity and her twin's begins). When my grandchildren are old enough, I will definitely share my copy of this book with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touching Sweet story
At first I wasn't sure how this book was going to flow.Twins separated at birth?Been there done that. But this story touched me in a surprising way.I come to really care for Alice and how she developed as the story progressed made me want to read more.Surprisingly even though Miami was a bit of a brat, she showed some endearing qualities. The story is short sadly, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I like how everything tied up in the end.It may not be the happily ever after but it is very close.

4-0 out of 5 stars missing sisters review
The book missing sisters was a very enjoyable book for it dealt with real life situations. i would recommend it to people aged 12-15 years old for some of the language is very difficult. i would rate this book 9 out of 10 because it had a slow start and a kind of unfinished ending. we did it as a class novel and everybody seemed to really enjoy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing Sisters
MIssing Sisters is set in America in 1968. The main character is Alice Colossus. Alice is an orphan in the Sacred Heart Home for Girls. Alice has no known siblings or parents until one day at summer camp she was mistaken for a girl by the name of Miami Shaw. Alice wants to know if this girl holds the key to finding her real parents. Read the book to find out.
We really enjoyed the book. The storyline is interesting. It's unputdownable yet it stays realistic.
I'd recommend this book to anyone aged 11 to 13 because some of the language is quite difficult and anyone younger probably wouldn't understand it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A clever way to end this fantasy trilogy
A good novel should be able to stand alone, even when it is part of a series, and this one does as well as any. Most of it is departure from the previous two novels. It is set far in the future, and the narrative gradually reveals a deeply divided human society of "Cats" and "Dogs" and "grunts." The genetically-altered Cats and Dogs live apart and feel superior to each other, but trade and a certain amount of mutual support create a fragile bond that is shattered by mutual misunderstanding and aggression. As the two central characters (one of each, of course) make their way to freedom and safety, they come to know more about each other's cultures and ask big questions about their own assumptions. Contact with "grunts" (non-altered humans) add to their broadening views. Finally, the author ties the novel closely to its two predecessors by bringing Christie's diary into the tale, and we learn about the beginnings of the world of Dogs and Cats. Young readers who have enjoyed the first two novels may be puzzled by the beginning of the tale because it seems unconnected but should feel quite satisfied with the way it all wraps up in the end. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A DELIGHTFUL READ
We all talk about our "comfort" reads....those books we pick up over and over again....the ones that lift our spirits....that make the hours just fly by....the ones that give us a "fuzzy" warm feeling....
The name Cathie Linz goes hand-in-hand with "comfort" reads....she never fails to delight the reader with her humor, likeable characters, unique plots and zest for life.....also her love of animals shows through over and over again...
Luc Dumont, head of St. Michel's Security Force, has been searching throughout Europe for the missing heir to the throne of the tiny country.....he was not a happy camper to find out that the future king was none other than himself!
The late king's stepdaughter, Juliet Beaudreau, has had deep feelings for Luc since he first appeared at the castle three years before.....although happy for Luc to hear that he will sit upon the throne in the future, she realizes he could never fall in love with a mere "commoner" such as she. With knowledge on royal etiquette, Juliet agrees to teach Luc protocol and traditions, knowing she's preparing him to find a suitable, royal wife....and having to face the fact that he will belong to someone else...
What follows is a darling story, complete with the perfect "villain", realistic conflicts, and wonderful secondary characters, especially the dowager queen.....Luc and Juliet were perfect for each other...and, of course, it had the "happily-ever-after" ending.
Reading any book by Cathie Linz always makes me smile...and in today's world, that says a LOT!I just wish this author would go to single-titles so there'd be more pages of sheer enjoyment for us fans! ... Read more
