5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This book was recommended to me by my mother. After reading the copy she gave me, I bought three additional copies to be able to give to friends. This book is a GREAT quick read and has a very deep meaning!Worth every penny and then some!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interpret it as you will...
But I see this book as a story of self-acceptance. Shaping your thinking and being happy with oneself before getting into any sort of relationship. And for that, I like this story a lot. I must admit, the title is a bit off-putting, but I think the book conveys a good message.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first, but still ok
This book focuses on the importance of being independent. While that is important, the author seems to have lost sight of the charm and simplicity that gave the first in the series so much lasting memory. It's not a horrible book, but not as good as the first.

5-0 out of 5 stars The missing piece meets the big O
this book, while appearing to be childish in nature, brings sane comfort to adult individuals who have begun to question their existance because of a serious event in their lives.I have read and re-read this book in the past and I give a copy away to distressted individuals.

Becareful when ordering there are simialar titles which have to do with orgasm and that is not this area of exploration!

It was missing a piece.
And it was not happy.
So it set off in search
of its missing piece.
And as it rolled
it sang this song -Oh I'm lookin' for my missin' piece
I'm lookin' for my missin' piece
Hi-dee-ho, here I go,
Lookin' for my missin' piece.

What it finds on its search for the missing piece is simply and touchingly told in this fable that gently probes the nature of quest and fulfillment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Shel, this is a must-have
My dad used to read the Silverstein books of poetry to me when I was little. We had no idea that there were short stories by him until I ran into this little treasure at my school library (I'm a teacher). This is a sweet book about fitting in and being comfortable in your own skin.

My grandaughter is a "book worm" and she really enjoys this book. She just turn 11 and I am giving her a Kindle to incentivete her passion for reading but I still will give her great books like this one. She really enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for elementary school students!
This book is an excellent introduction for young students to the world of Shel Silverstein! The 4th and 5th grade students in our school love this author's books. The younger students really enjoy The Missing Piece. The illustrations are simple yet effective and the words make some children want to sing-along!

5-0 out of 5 stars the Missing Piece
How many times have we all felt like we are missing a piece?this charming book by Silverstein tells the journey of a circle in search of its missing piece.it take it's journey and searches and while doing that, the circle has some nice experiences. All and all, it is the journey, not the end results that matters and the Missing Piece teaches that eloquently and with simple drawings.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a bad book....
I'd never read anything by this author but the blurb sounded good and I read an excerpt which also sounded good so I took the plunge...and drowned in the bad storyline.I'm not even going to go into plot or characters other reviewers have already outlined. The story lacked cohesion, the characters weren't likable, their actions made no sense and in general the whole thing was a pain to read.Pass this one over.

4-0 out of 5 stars From J. Kaye's Book Blog
MISSING IN ACTION is the first of MIA series that takes paranormal to a whole new level as Tristan McKade and his partner Shamus Long, both genetically enhanced solders, created for the sole purpose of working for the Supernatural Control Squad.

Both were thought to be dead by their families. So when Tristan shows up and saves Sara, a woman he'd been in love with before the accident, from a vampire attack, he had a lot of explaining to do. Trouble is, he the SCS is a secret organization and he can't reveal enough to satisfy her.

The story is filled with plenty of action. In fact, I wondered about midway through if maybe there was too much crammed into such a short book. I felt the background information of Tristan's job, for example, wasn't deep enough and would have liked to know more. This would have been one of those books that could have been lengthened to make a full 330 some odd pages and kept the reader interest all the way until the end. If the story had been allowed to develop more, it would have been more believable.

Maybe more will be revealed in book two, SHAMEFUL, which is now in print.

Tristan McKade is dead, or anyone that had known him thought he was dead. The only ones that know he isn't are the SCS. Being dead gives him the edge to search for a series killer. working for the Supernatural Control Squad has it's moments, but this is the best way to stop a mad killer that can't be stopped any other way. But in doing that he had to leave Sara McCoy, and that was one of the hardest things he could have ever did. Wanting to let go of the past before any more woman get hurt or worse die, he goes and sees Sara late at night to say his goodbyes to the woman he loved more then anything. And unknown to him, the son he never new he had. When Tristan finds out that Sara had had his son, there child he knows he can't live her and there son no matter what. So Sara becomes drawn into the triangle of his life and the Mangler, the entity that wants to possess Sara at any cost. Can Tristan keep Sara and his son safe from this Being? In the end Tristan has to make sure he is the last man standing for his Sara and there son?
Sara McCoy was just starting to live again since she lost Tristan. She has gone on with her life and is about to be married. It isn't what she thought her life was going to be since losing Tristan, but you must go on or be as good as dead. She is celebrating her future and her engagement, but notices a man watching in the back of the room, who is he and what does he want she wonders? He reminds her of her Tristan, but it couldn't be. So when he goes outside she decides to follow. But when she goes out to find him, he has just vanished into thin air. Sara thought she was just about able to get past losing Tristan, and then he shows up. See what Tristan didn't know is that when she thought she had lost him, she had had his son . When he learns of there son, he couldn't leave her period now, It would have been hard enough to leave just her to keep her safe from the Being he is chasing, the being that wants Sara. Can the two of them work together to beat this killer and have the future that was stolen from them until now?
"Oh God" this story was Damn Great. But come on what did we expect, right? This author knows how to write a story with Intrigue and passion and story line, all of what you need for a 5 book. I loved the passion that was between these two. And the storyline, of her thinking she lost the love of his life, and raising their son by herself has happened to many times in real life, so to read a story with a happy ever after, for me as a reader is so "Great". To read a book like this that helps you escape from life is what is needed more in life that is for sure.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Many churches are seeking ways to reach out to the younger generations. Unfortunately this often manifests as either a "come be just like us!" attitude--suggesting an unwillingness to change in order to be inclusive of young people--or as a slick marketing campaign that targets young adults in much the same way secular advertising does. Both of these approaches often leave young adults feeling that their particular spiritual gifts and needs are unwanted by the church. "We only want you for your demographics" is the message given.
Carol Howard Merritt, a pastor in her mid-thirties, suggests a different way for churches to be able to approach young adults on their own terms. Outlining the financial, social, and familial situations that affect many young adults today, she describes how churches can provide a safe, supportive place for young adults to nurture relationships and foster spiritual growth. There are few places left in society that allow for real intergenerational connections to be made, yet these connections are vital for any church that seeks to reflect the fullness of the body of Christ.
Using the metaphor of a tribe to describe the close bonds that form when people of all ages decide to walk together on their spiritual journeys, Merritt casts a vision of the church that embraces the gifts of all members while reaching out to those who might otherwise feel unwelcome or unneeded. Mainline churches have much to offer young adults, as well as much to learn from them. By breaking down artificial age barriers and building up intentional relationships, congregations can provide a space for all people to connect with God, each other, and the world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book
This is a helpful book for anyone doing ministry with intergenerational challenges.Howard Merritt provides helpful suggestions and food for thought. Her specific suggestions may not be applicable to every church but she challenges today's church to engage young adults through an intergenerational model.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad
A very good book with lots of room for thought. Some of the ideas are needed in every church and some of the ideas I believe are way out in left field.I think if the Bible is the ultimate truth and the Word of God, it should be respected and not changed. In a couple of places the author forgets the Word of God and tries to change it to conform to her life style. It should be the other way around.

4-0 out of 5 stars Show people they're valued
A useful book to be used as a springboard for conversations on the composition of your Christian community.
Often we say we want a particular group of people in our church but don't show them that they are valued. The basic premise of the book is that you need to demonstrate the value of people, and it is through the small things, through connecting in with them that you show this, throwing some money at an issue wont solve it, it requires commitment from the faith community to live with hope (resurrection hope) that when we treat a group with respect they will respond to it.
It is a book that spans the laity/clergy divide easily and is a digestible read for your whole leadership team.

5-0 out of 5 stars recommended
I recommend this book for anyone who wants to get a realistic and respectful take on where young adults are and what they are seeking in terms of meaningful spiritual community. Young people can tell when the church is targeting them for membership for reasons of institutional life insurance, and when it's out of an authentic desire for their gifts to be a part of our churches. Congregational leaders who read Tribal Church and take its ideas to heart will be more likely to trend towards the latter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I just love this book. I have read it several times and it just keeps getting better. I would recommend this book to everyone!

3-0 out of 5 stars A little dissappointed
This is the first book by Megan Derr that I did not enjoy as much as I enjoyed her Prisoner, Fairy Tales Slashed, Regency and several other titles of hers. I love this author's works, I am more than happy to support her, she has a credit of trust from me for at least several more books to come, but I felt that this story was missing bite if that makes sense. I mean, yes, it is sweet and I sympathized with Cassidy and his plight, but I did not feel much chemistry between protagonists. In most of her other stories I felt not just chemistry, but fire and in her stories sex scenes usually fade to black and she still made me feel that fire, but not so much here.

I was really curious to see how she does realistic contemporary setting and I was less impressed than with her historical/fantasy/futuristic settings.

Her writing is still enjoyable though.

On October 1, 1991, Fran Gladden-Smith disappeared without a trace from her home in Princeton, New Jersey, and suspicion immediately turned to her new husband, John David Smith III. In a highly unusual move, the police allowed her family to be involved in the investigation — as long as they didn't interfere with law enforcement. Over the next several years, Fran's sister Sherrie Gladden-Davis played a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, tracking Smith and his activities across the United States. She could go where police couldn't — and she dedicated herself to helping authorities get the evidence they needed to unravel the mystery of her sister's disappearance. My Sister Is Missing is Sherrie Gladden-Davis's harrowing account of the search for her sister's killer, and the inspiring story of her extraordinary path to justice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Missing sister
What a well written story. My heart goes out to the family of Fran and Janice. It's sad that in today's society that there is still such an injustice. People can be so cruel. I applaud all the hard work put in to writing this story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading
This book is a very interesting chronicle and very well written saga of the murders of two women at the hands of their husband at the time, John David Smith. The book, written by one of the victims sister, chronicles the exhaustive search by the victim's family for the answers as to what happened to their beloved sister. It also details how that search ended up helping to resolve a cold case, from the 1970's, and eventually put the murderer into police custody. The book is fascinating since it is written so "un-like" many true crime novels which are often to full of courtroom drama and endless descriptions of the police involvement in the cases at hand. This book tells the day to day feelings and frustrations of the victims family, their quest to find answers, and somewhat ultimate justice for their sister. It is a "page turner" and well worth reading. UPDATE: As of the writing of my review Smith sits in an Ohio prison at the age of 54 while in his 4th year of a 15-life sentence. UPDATE #2: Sandra Anderson, the dog handler who assisted in the search for bodies in this case, pled guilty in 2004 in U.S. District Court in Detroit, MI to five felony charges (including obstruction of justice and making false statements to federal authorities) involving "planted" evidence cases in Oscoda, Bay City and Oakland County, MI in 1999 involving her cadaver dog Eagle. A two year prison term and financial restitution was paid to at least one (Lapeer) MI. county by Ms. Anderson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Needs 20/20? This Is Better!
I'm not usually a big fan of true-crime/mystery-type books, but this one pleasantly surprised (and intrigued) me! The book's plot may sound slightly familiar, as it has been featured on various TV news magazine shows -- including 20/20 -- but you'll never get such amazing detail and narrative quality from a one-hour TV show. In the book, you can really get into the tale and feel the emotions of someone searching for a lost family member -- and seeking justice for the person responsible. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery and a story you just can't put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gripping, Real-Life Crime Caper That Will Astound You
Unbelievable! Sherrie Gladden-Davis's story is compelling, evocative, and a testament to the power of family. With the support of her niece, Dedy, Sherrie tracks her sister's suspected killer across the country, working alongside various law enforcement officers, her search for justice unwavering.

The author chronicles her search to uncover the missing puzzle pieces that she hopes will ultimately solve the mystery of her sister's disappearance. Despite limited financial means, no Internet access (the bulk of the story takes place in the 1990s), and the disparate agendas of those around her, Sherrie remains committed to finding justice for her sister.

Operating on hope, coffee, and the power of her faith and family, Ms. Gladden-Davis's story is a compelling one that had me reading at all hours of the night.

Tightly crafted, insightful, outrageous, and poignant ... this is one of the finest, real-life crime capers I've ever read. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't turn the pages fast enough!
This engaging story will send chills up your spine and renew your appreciation for your own loved ones. The author takes you through the search for her missing sister--from the initial shock to navigating the red-tape of the justice system. You'll come to admire her strength and tenacity while gaining a fascinating glimpse into her sister's life and suspicious disappearance.

I don't want to spoil the mystery, but as the story unfolds, you'll discover details that rival any suspense novel. The suspected killer's behavior is like a car wreck unfolding in slow motion--you won't be able to look away. Step into the world of this real-life, unsolved crime, and you'll soon find yourself repeating the unbelievable tale to everyone you know. It's better than any "ripped from the headlines" show on television. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Big Sea - I've Never Seen Anything Like It In My Life." -Captain Ernest M. McSorley, November 10, 1975
"29 Missing" by Andrew Kantar is a brief yet captivating account of the history of the "Edmund Fitzgerald" with an obvious focus on November 10, 1975, the night she sank without warning in Lake Superior. I have read Kantar's other books on Great Lakes shipwrecks and have enjoyed them all. I particularly recommend "Deadly Voyage" on the loss of the "Daniel J. Morrell" in Lake Huron. I also found "Black November" to be a great account of the "Carl D. Bradley" sinking in Lake Michigan. "29 Missing" is, like the other two, a brief and well-written book, though unlike "Deadly Voyage" and "Black November," it is specifically written for young adult readers and the stylistic differences are quite pronounced at times. Note that all three are suitable for young readers of sufficient comprehension, and I recommend them all.

Of course the "Edmund Fitzgerald" is the most famous and most mysterious shipwreck in Great Lakes history, so more potential readers are familiar with the outline of the story than they would be with other maritime disasters. Kantar does an excellent job of covering the total history of the Fitzgerald including her record-breaking size and hauling history, and makes her perilous story come alive especially for younger readers. He discusses the theories of her sinking and briefly outlines the expeditions to the ship and history since the sinking as well. The book features some very nice photographs and a map of the "Fitzgerald's" route on November 9-10, 1975, a feature younger readers will readily appreciate.

This is by no means a definitive history of the "Edmund Fitzgerald," and although it is quite brief and very quickly read by adults, it well serves the noble purpose of introducing younger people to the perils of the Great Lakes and the life and death of the "Edmund Fitzgerald" and the men who sailed on her.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids
To all readers: Please be advised that this is a kids book for someone in the age group of 10 to 13. Needless to say as an adult, it is a very, very quick read and you probably already know most of the story if you were alive when it happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
I bought 29 Missing as a gift for my husband, started to read a few pages, and simply could not put it down! I loved the way the author gives all the fascinating details of the Fitzgerald's last voyage and tells about the later expeditions down to the wreck. Some of the other books on the Fitz that I tried to choose from were so dry and included too much technical information. This one tells a story of real human interest that anyone can understand and has photos and a great map so that you can follow the voyage as you read it. When I finished this book, I felt like I had a clear idea of all the reasons why the ship went down and how incredible it was that more ships were not lost that night, especially in the rescue attempts. As far as I am concerned, 29 Missing is the best book you could buy about the Fitzgerald. My husband loved it too!

4-0 out of 5 stars i love this book!
I believe that the book 29 Missing is facinating for readers of all ages! I am 11 years old and I only knew about the Titanic until I read this.It isa great source of information about the Edmund Fitzgerald. To me, this bookwas both interesting and amazing. I've learned a lot while reading thisbook, and I hope that you do too. ... Read more

Product Description
For many faculty the desire and need to go abroad is inherent in the nature of their discipline. For others the thought of going abroad for scholarly purposes is completely alien. This book, which was sponsored by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, looks in depth at the international experience of American faculty. Goodwin and Nacht examine the type of faculty who go abroad and their reasons for doing so, the incentives and the disincentives for faculty travel abroad, the attitudes prevalent on US campuses toward such activities, the special obstacles and risks faced by faculty who commit themselves to an international experience and the effects of foreign experience among the faculty on the internationalisation of US campuses. In preparing the book, the authors conducted extensive interviews with faculty at thirty-seven institutions of higher education. ... Read more

This is the story of the five Herbert sisters and the man who watches them in the shadows.Beauty is the oldest that can't wait to leave the small town.Mim is the sensitive one.Stevie is the rebellious one.Fancy is the one with special needs.Autumn is the youngest.

The man is very ordinary. He watches his chickadees, planning on which one he'll take. The girls are unaware of this and continue with their lives until their family security is shattered one fateful day when the man makes his decision with painful consequences.

I admit at times this book was hard to read considering I'm the mother of a small child. This is a very chilling and at times disturbing story of a man who watches and waits to kidnap a girl.I was disturbed at how much the author revealed about the man's plans and his thinking so much so that I found myself checking my surroundings more than once.

This novel is told from alternating points of view that at times confused me.I almost think it would have been better if the author had stayed with only one point of view.By having all five sister's voices throughout this novel I didn't feel a real connection with any of them. Also the parents were in the background.I wanted to know what they were feeling and to show how a tragedy rips apart a family.

At the end of the book is a study guide and other interesting information on how the author came up with the idea of THE MISSING GIRL.I think this book would be a great book club selection. Also it would be great for discussions afterwards.

Norma Fox Mazer died in 2009 and THE MISSING GIRL is her last novel. Her career as an author of teenage books spanned forty years. Her books won many awards, including the ALAN Award from the National Council of Teachers of English, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and the Christopher Award.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
The Herbert sisters are completely ignorant of the man watching them. They don't realize his growing and dangerous fascination. They are completely oblivious to the fact that their safety is in jeopardy.

It's only a matter of time now.

THE MISSING GIRL is a tremendous read. Thrilling, suspenseful, and riveting, Mazer easily pulls the reader into the intricately woven story, causing shock, horror, and yet compassion as well.

This is a bold story that will rise above and beyond your expectations as the author charms her way into the readers' hearts through her beautiful characters and terrifying plot.

This is one book that is impossible to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't be able to put it down
The nameless man watches the five Herbert sisters as they flock to school, chattering to each other. The man loves the chatter. He loves the sight of the innocent girls. They don't notice him, which he believes is a good thing. He wants to blend into the background and continue to obsess over them.

The Herbert family, never prosperous, has fallen on hard times. Poppy, the father, can't work due to an injury, and Mommy's job in a nursing home kitchen doesn't cover the expenses of a family of seven. The parents struggle with finances and depression. Seventeen-year-old Beauty Herbert (who hates the irony of her name because she knows she's plain) works after school at a flower shop. She contributes to the family but plans her escape from them the minute she turns 18. She is determined to shake off the dust of their small town and find opportunity elsewhere.

Still, Beauty worries about her sisters. Will she be able to actually leave them? There's quiet and responsible 16-year-old Mim, who should be fine without Beauty (although Beauty doesn't know Mim's enormous secret yet). Fourteen-year-old Faithful has changed her name to Stevie. Stevie is a temperamental, wild disaster who wears the family out with her loud dramatic outbursts. To Beauty, Stevie seems headed for calamity, especially after Beauty spies her making out with a boy.

Fancy is 12 years old physically, although she will always be younger mentally. The family dotes on her, and she loves her special education classes. Fancy talks into her new tape recorder, dictating a free-flowing ramble of thoughts and ideas whenever she wants to chatter but no one has time to listen to her.

We meet 11-year-old Autumn as she tries to convince her mother that she's way too sick to go to school. Autumn has problems with her classes and, at the school counselor's urging, tries to write down her most private thoughts in a journal.

Beauty, Autumn and Fancy relay their stories to readers, telling us about their teachers, hopes, dreams and problems. One sister struggles with fluctuating powerful crushes, and the difference between real and fantasy relationships. Author Norma Fox Mazer, using various points of view (first, second and third), gets the girls' voices pitch-perfect. The setup, as well as the telling title, is an ominous backdrop to the family story as we become acquainted with the characters. We know these girls, and we're terrified for them as we learn more about the man who is watching them (a man who is proud that he killed countless pets until he finally found the perfect, obedient ones to keep). He inches closer to the Herbert sisters --- and we forget to breathe as we turn each page.

Mazer handles the dark theme of THE MISSING GIRL expertly, weaving empowerment, family love and hope into a tale that is likely to haunt readers long after the book is read.

5-0 out of 5 stars From J. Kaye's Book Blog
When this book arrived, I had just planned to thumb through it. I'd never heard of the author or much information about the book. I was a bit curious.

The book itself is small and chunky. I don't know what it is about that particular shape, but I find it extremely attractive. I found myself scanning the pages.

After reading the inside flap, I had to read a little more. Before I knew it, I was a quarter way through and hadn't even left my office chair! There was no stopping then. I tossed the rest of the day out the window and moved to a more comfortable spot. The inner dialogue was...amazing is the only word I can think of. Mazer goes from the sweet, innocent voice of a young girl, one who I can pick out of a classroom to a chilling voice of a pedophile. The pedophile's voice is so chilling, it will have you afraid to take your eyes off your own children, even for a second.

The book is listed for teens, but adults should read it. I found myself rereading spots in the book, amazed at this writer's gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars a page-turner
THE MISSING GIRL is a taut thriller I read in one long sitting. Mazer's characters are completely individualized and beautifully-crafted, and, while the story is tense and terrifying, it is also about family, courage, and strength. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good continuation of an interesting fantasy
Kate Thompson has written a couple of outstanding books, most notably "The New Policeman." Although this novel (and the entire Missing Link trilogy) are not as strong, the characters are appealing and the story line raises some interesting questions for young adult readers. The weakest part is the science, which is an unfortunate flaw in a story for which science (and scientists) are central to the plot. However, the ongoing narrative of a world in chaos (largely due to unavailability of fuel and the oppressive response of the British government, among others)sets a believable stage for the tale. Genetically-altered animals and humans attempt to discover the explanation of the great leap that separated humans from other primates. Readers who have enjoyed the first book will want to read this and the final installment. It all hangs together well. ... Read more
