Too confusing
The immunology section of this book is the most convoluted reading I have had in all my readings for the step 1.Frankly, the figures are far superior in explaining what the author is trying to convey.Maybe this book was helpful for others but it just frustrated me and did not expand any more than what was already more concisely described in first aid.Bottom line, not worth the time.

the immunlogy section is extra ordinary with concise yet comprehensive ! itsimplified not only for usmle but also for medical carrier, so it should study first before the other topics.
I think the book needs more thorough answers for usmle questions as most of us purchase for usmle reviews not for text !

Almost excellent
I love this book but the reason i gave this book 4 stars is just because they didn't bother to correct some mistakes of the seventh edition. In this edition (eighth), on page 41 (Chapter 7) Botton note says: Pseudomonas aeruginosa {endotoxin} has the same mode of action. Refering to Diphtheria toxin. It should be {exotoxin}. Another example (to show you a few) is in the same chapter on page 43 table 7-13, it says:
Nervous system
Gram-positive rods:
Clostridium tetani>>>>inhibit acetylcholine release
Clostridium botulinum>>>>inhibit glycine release
As you can see they are mismatched.
So this book is almost perfect, excellent contents but with a few mistakes in some concepts.

Currently the best Micro Review Book
Yes folks, this is better than Made Rediculously Simple. Well, let me rephrase that. I like this book a lot better. Now dont get me wrong, MRS is a good book and I use both, but if I could only choose one, I would go with this one.

First of all, it just came out this summer. So it does have some recent updates that MRS doesnt have, particularily with the antibiotics. I also think it offers better clinical scenarios and presentations of the various bugs. It is in depth with what you need to know, yet concise at the same time. Ive used it for class, and for board prep. Another thing, is that it doesnt have those silly mnemonics that can often be very far fetched and cumbersome. And yet one more thing, but may sound silly, is that I like the font and layout better. It makes more judicious use of tables as well to drive home key points.

And the best of all, is that it has over 600 USMLE style questions. I thought for the most part, they were indicative of what you will see on the real thing. Last but not least, it also has a great section devoted to medical immunology, so no need to buy another separate book.

So if you have money to get both, do it. But if you are trying to choose between the two, I say get this one. The LANGE Pharm and Board review book is good too. Good luck. ... Read more

Microbiology for Allied Health
I purchased this for my Microbiology class and found it to be easy read and understanding.I have read other Micro books and this by far is the most informative and understandable text for Microbiology which is a tough subject.It is recommended even if just to use as research.I have kept it for just such a purpose to use for backup.Even if you have to use a different text this one should be alongside it to help you understand what the other books don't explain well.

Another life saver!
I purchased this book as a "prep" for Microbiology for nursing school. I HIGHLY recommend it for all nursing/medical students!

Ok book. But didn't really help me.
The book itself is good.High quality and written pretty well.Just like all the other books in the Idoiots series.But it didn't really help me.Didn't go along with what my instructor taught.So I didn't really use it.

Covers only 3 chapters of college Micro text books
Get Microbiology Demystified instead.This Idiot's guide only covered the first 3 chapters of my micro text book.Where as the Demystified book covered all chapters of my college text book.

I'm out $16 for this book
Thought this would be a good supplement to my sophomore level Microbiology text, but so far, I have not used it at all.When I've needed a simpler explanation (an overview) of a particular subject, I've looked in the table of contents of the book and not found what I'm looking for.I've received much more use out of the "Essentials" book (~$7) that I bought at the same time.

Essentials of Diagnostic Microbiology
I am a medical labortory technition student.We use this as one of our primary microbiolgy textbook. After spending a couple of weeks with it, out teacher dug last years book out of the boxes.This book is full of errors, typos, and generaly hard to keep stuff straight.It sometimes seems that it was never proofread.Its full of good info, but I wonder how much is correct.I have bought 2 other books on my own for the class that I (and the teacher) rely on to verify the info in this book.If you can find this book cheap, buy it.Don't waste any money on full price. ... Excellent source for microbial physiology
I have used "General Microbiology" as a teaching source in Microbial Physiology for many years.I have allways been amazed at the scope of information packed in what appears to be a rather small volume, which is not easy to find in other sources.It is excellent value for money.On the downside, it is getting long in the tooth and there does not seem to be a new revision on the horizon - which is a real pity!

This little book is a treasure trove of useful information for biology instructors and students alike. This book should NOT be in the library of any biologist, It should, however, be dog-eared and on the desk of every working biology student, teacher and writer. It never fails to amaze me how easily I find what I'm looking for in it and how complete the answer is. A living classic! Five stars is not enough.

I had this book in my summer microbiology class. Granted, at least 25% of it was not related to what my teacher was teaching us, but it sure helped to reinforce the parts we did go over!

Microbiology:Abreeze
Even before I began this course I was terrified.Just the word "Microbiology" terrified me.This textbook is wonderful.It is easy to understand and it makes the course material fun to learn.I would definitely recommend this textbook for any beginning Microbiology course.

A huge disappointment
This book is nearly worthless. Large parts of it are just lists of organisms and there are frequent grammatical errors, typos, misspellings. It's clear it was written in a rush. The blurb on the back says "lavishly illustrated" which is a lie. All the illustrations, of which there are few, are not even B&W photos but line drawings, and not even very good ones at that. For example, The very first two, meant to illustrate two different organisms, are hard to tell apart. Save your money and buy something else.

Okay, but not enough detail
I bought this book to help with a Microbiology class I need for nursing.Some of the more important things we are doing in lab (staining and cultures) have little detail or are not mentioned at all.For example, they mention MacConkey agar but not the others that we are being tested on.Chemical metabolism has some details, but not enough about ATP production.This book has helped clarify some things, but I have not been able to use it to the extent that I would have hoped.

Great transaction.

Skimpy on highlighting essential topics. Generous on graphic illustration
After progressing in reading, the reader will get used to the generosity of the authors in their constant, yet might be odd, attempts to illustrate the subject matter, specially, the extended review summaries at the end of the book. The book strength lies in standardizing the review methods of classification of microorganism, of drug stacks used in treatment, and of microscopic and culture morphology.

Despite the reasonable flow of thoughts in the paragraphs of each subject, the book lacks highlighting of names of diseases, organisms, and methods that are left hidden in the maze of words. Thus, the student reader has to struggle with underlining and highlighting the dense text. For example, a long paragraph on selective, bacterial culture media contains five media names typed as plain text. That would require thorough re-reading, while reviewing, in order to memorize the five media. Thus, the authors abandoned the very premise of the book, which is "to review", and left the reader with the burden of searching while reviewing.

The book lacks of adequate footnotes or paragraph notes in visible locations. As such, the book paragraphs are plain, dense, and burdensome. Though there are plenty of boxed highlighted concepts, and even funny cartoons, it appears that the authors dismissed the busy and somber mood of busy lifestyle of students and rather tended to the relaxed style of casual readers.

Although most of the graphic illustrations are useful and neat, there is a sense of naivety in making trivial illustrations that serve no higher cause than the obvious. For example, on modes of virus transmission, a figure shows placental, birth canal, and postpartum images of contact between the agent and fetus/baby. Nothing is gained from such simplistic graphing of the plain and obvious course of action. In displaying the microscopic slides and culture photos, the book wasted more space on the entitling of the medical illustrations than on making the slides and cultures large enough to be legible.

The book ventures into an odd and redundant way of describing bacterial classification using colored pie chart. The frequently repeated colored pie serves very little purpose compared to the space it occupied. Neither the portions of the pie correspond to any numeric value of the bacterial classes they represent, nor do the colors of the pie wedges serve any purpose other than decorating the book page. The same odd style of representation applies to the use of one-column tables that use multiple rows to compare two different types of organisms.

Good MCAT study guide
This book is a great review for microbiology on the MCAT.Clear explanations, with pictures and figures, as well as concise chapter summaries make this a helpful book for MCAT prep.I also used the Lippincott Biochem review and thought it was also very useful as a MCAT study aid.

good for learning microbiology from a question book
I have not yet taken the USMLE.I do not know how I ll do in the exam. My style of studying is first reading questions andunderlining and learning their answers and understanding what is being tested and emphasized in the exam. I learn what to leran from q books.
