From the supplier: Cattle ranching in Sonora, Mexico is a thriving occupation despite the locale's desert environment characterized by sparse herbal growth and dry climate. Cowboys in the area are, at the same time, good agriculturists who practice irrigation to grow feed for their cattle. They have significant economic and political influence in their areas of jurisdiction. Unfortunately, many of them have also become drug traffickers.

Product Description

Seventeen years have elapsed since I was in the territory in which the events in the early history of the Rio Grande Pueblos transpired, and twenty-nine years since I first entered the field of research among those Pueblos under the auspices of the Archaeological Institute of America. I am now called upon by the Institute to do for the Indians of the Rio Grande villages what I did nearly two decades ago for the Zuni tribe, namely, to record their documentary history.

I shall follow the method employed by me in the case of the documentary history of Zuni, by giving the events with strict adherence to documentary sources, so far as may be possible, and shall employ the correlated information of other branches only when absolutely indispensable to the elucidation of the documentary material.

The geographical features of the region to be treated are too well known to require mention. Neither can folklore and tradition, notwithstanding their decisive importance in a great many cases, be touched upon except when alluded to in the sources themselves. I am fully aware, as I stated in presenting the history of the Zuni tribe, that a history based exclusively on documents, whether printed or written, must necessarily be imperfect because it is not impartial, since it summarizes the views of those who saw and understood but one side of the question, and judged it only from their own standpoint. This defect cannot be remedied, as it underlies the very nature of the task, and the greater therefore is the necessity of carefully studying the folklore of the Indians in order to check and complete as well as to correct the picture presented by people acquainted with the art of writing.

This is a book about the biological conquest of the New World.Taking as a case study the sixteenth century history of a region of highland central Mexico, it shows how the environmental and social changes brought about by the introduction of Old World species aided European expansion. The book spells out in detail the environmental changes associated with the introduction of Old World grazing animals into New World ecosystems, demonstrates how these changes enabled the Spanish takeover of land, and explains how environmental changes shaped the colonial societies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark On Mexico's Environmental History
This too-short book ably expands on the achievements of the Berkeley School of historical demography, while integrating Mexico with the concerns of US environmental history. The (UCal) Berkeley School---Woodrow Borah, Sherburne Cook, Lesley Simpson, and Carl Sauer---pioneered the systematic study of Indian population decline, and also explored patterns of land exploitation in New Spain.Melville extends this work with in-depth use of Mexican and Spanish archives, focusing on the Valle del Mezquital north of Mexico City. She shows how Spaniards used depopulated Indian lands for sheep raising, leading to overgrazing, degradation and vegetation change.Formerly fertile lands were colonized by mesquite scrub (thus Valle del Mezquital), making the region largely unproductive until irrigation in the 20th century.Thorough documentation makes this the most concrete study of Mexican land use history, and while the writing is not exciting, it is quite readable. An interesting chapter compares Australia with the Valle, but it distracts readers from the too-brief core of the book and ultimately seems misplaced.Since this book appeared, Melville has taken up the larger issue of capitalism's impact on Latin American environments with a chapter in T. Griffith & L. Robin eds, "Ecology and Empire."There is now a very solid study of struggles over water use in colonial Puebla, S. Lipsett-Rivera, "To Defend Our Water With the Blood of Our Veins." ... Product Description
The Bush administration has designated the U.S.-Mexico border “the last frontier” against potential terrorists from Latin America. Analyzing the human costs, The Last Frontier explores the effects of neoliberal policies on the border. On the one hand, neoliberal economics depend on open borders for the free flow of trade and the maintenance of a low-wage labor force. On the other, both Mexico and the United States continue to heighten surveillance mechanisms and Border Patrol forces, especially in the wake of September 11, in an attempt to close those borders.

Covering a range of disciplinary perspectives—geography, political science, anthropology, American studies, literary studies, and environmental studies—these essays contend that U.S. policies to curtail immigration and drug trafficking along the Mexican border are ineffective. George W. Bush’s call for a volunteer security force has legitimized a vigilante presence through the formation of Minutemen civilian border patrols, in addition to larger numbers of Border Patrol agents and expanded detention centers. One contributor argues that, due to the increasingly dangerous border-crossing conditions, more undocumented immigrants are remaining in the United States year-round rather than following the traditional seasonal pattern of work and returning to Mexico. Another contributor interviews drug smugglers and government officials, revealing the gap between reality and the claims of success by the U.S. government in the “war on drugs.” Focusing on the social justice movement Ni Una Mas (Not One More), one essay delves into the controversy over the unsolved murders of hundreds of young women in the border town of Ciudad Juárez and the refusal of the government to investigate these murders properly. Other essays consider instances of resistance and activism—ranging from political movements and protests by NGOs to artistic expression through alternative narratives, poetry, and photography—against the consequences of neoliberalism on the border and its populations.

From the author: The Chiapas uprising of 1994 rallied an international community of supporters, largely organized through activities on the Internet, that provided an example of the possibilities and limitations of the Net as a tool for social movements. This article models the Internet as a form of rhizome: an intermediate and contested social space composed of flows that transcend boundaries and forge new connections between events and places. The success of Internet organizing in southern Mexico is due to the constant and reciprocal connections between cyberspace and other social spaces, which avoided the restriction of events to a contained space and scale. Keywords: cyberspace, Mexico, social movements, Zapatistas.

From the supplier: The author examine the roll of the Internet in Mexico's international politics. Topics include cyberspace draw backs, geopolitics, and Zapatistas fight against the Mexican government.

From the author: The Purepecha region of Michoacan State, in west-central Mexico, has a strong tradition of craft production, especially wooden items. Transportation improvements in the region since the mid-twentieth century have led to a higher level of integration of the regional economy, yet access to the broader Mexican market remains limited. Towns throughout the region have experienced substantial changes in the types of crafts produced, the extent of their local and external markets, and the location of craft production. Transportation improvements have, in part, led to agglomeration economies and a resultant contraction in the number of different types and an increase in the volume of the crafts produced. Market changes have led to the proliferation of craft storefronts in towns with higher levels of accessibility. Conversely, remote towns still rely heavily on distributors and have not been able to expand their markets. As a result, the region has seen the development of a two-tiered system whereby towns with increased accessibility have viable craft industries and towns with limited accessibility struggle with stagnant craft industries. Keywords: Michoacan, Mexico, Purepecha region, road network, transportation, wooden crafts.

Product Description
The art of distillation arrived in Mexico with theSpaniards in the sixteenth century.Even before that time nativeskills and available resources had contributed to a well-developedtradition of intoxicating beverages, many of which are stil producedand consumed.Henry Bruman visited various Mexican and CentralAmerican Indian tribes to reconstruct the variety and extent of theseancient traditions. He discerned five distinct areas that he definedby their culturally most significant beverages and superimposed theseover the great mescal wine region. In these reigns he noted winesfrom cactus, cactus fruit, cornstalks, and mesquite pods, beer fromsprouted maize, and fermented sap from pulque agaves. Outside of themescal region he observed widespread consumption in the Yucatan of awine made form fermented honey and balch bark and lesser knownbeverages in other regions. He also observed the frequent inclusionin the fermentation process of alkaloid-bearing ingredients such aspeyote and tobacco, plants whose roots or bark contain saponins-whichact as cardiac poisons-and even poisons from certain toads!Alcoholin Ancient Mexico describes in Detail the various plants and processesused to make such beverages, their prevalence, and their significancefor local culture. It also considers the relative absence ofalcoholic drink in the southwestern United States, the introduction ofstills following the Spanish conquest, and possible sources for theintroduction of coconut wine.Although this book is based on researchconducted in the 1930s, this never-before-published material retainsits relevance today. Bruman's photographs offer a fascinating glimpseat a traditional world that was vanishing even then. ... Read more
