1-0 out of 5 stars Cheated from this seller
To whom it may concerned,

I've been cheated from the seller who sold me this textbook. Most pages between every chapter guideline and review exercises have been ripped off. These missing parts have required exercises that I will not be able to do because THEY ARE MISSING.

The seller was advertising this product as "like new" and I even wrote a feedback as "excellent condition" but I just noticed I HAVE BEEN CHEATED.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life in Science
Richard Feynman once remarked that because he knew the different dimensions of physics- philosophical, mathematical, technological, historical, practical, etc. - attracted different students, he baited his lectures with all of these lures in order to bring students in.Between 1959 and 1979 Doubleday Anchor produced a wonderful series of books on science (72 titles in all) aimed at intelligent high school students and written by some of the best scientific talent in the US.The Science Study Series aimed at attracting young minds to science by exploring its many dimensions. Some titles looked at a particular area, some a specific technology, some were historical in approach, others examined policy implications of science. Unlike so many modern popular science books, which focus on the "Geez Whiz" aspects of science, Science Study volumes often addressed very basic and simple (to formulate) questions like: how do birds and butterfiles navigate in migration, what are the properties of water, what is the nature of violent storms?Always the emphasis was on understanding the process of science: how we proceed systematically to gain genuine knowledge.
Duncan Blanchard's FROM RAINDROPS TO VOLCANOES, officially volume 50 in the Science Study Series, was among the very best.Blanchard starts with such simple questions as: how do rain drops form?, how big are they?, what is their shape?, and proceeds to show how the pursuit of these questions can lead one, step by step, very far from where one began. As such, it is not only a beautiful illustration of the logic of scientific investigation, but also a wonderful example of the excitement and open-ended nature of a life in science.Blanchard's studies take him from laboratory, to ocean surface exploration in the Caribbean, to Hawaiian mountain ranges, to new-born volcanic islands forming off Iceland.Despite being written more than 40 years ago, FROM RAINDROPS TO VOLCANOES still retains all of its freshness, and all of its impact in showing how a scientific career can lead to a very rich and fulfilling life.

5-0 out of 5 stars delightful
in Clouds in a Glass of Beer: Simple Experiments in Atmospheric Physics, Craig Bohren refers to Blanchard's very readable book to study the mechanisms by which salt gets into the atmosphere. I got a copy, and must admit that the book is indeed very readable but above all delightful !!

You will learn, among many other things, how bubbles are formed in the sea, how they break and form a jet, and how the jet produces drops that are ejected into the air above.

Everything starts with observations, followed by experiments (involving a minimum of equipment) in an effort to understand what goes on in the ocean of air, and its interaction with the surface of the sea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still A Worthy Read
I first read "From Raindrops to Volcanoes" when I was a meteorology student in the late 1960s and interested in cloud physics. It was one of the best of a great series of lay science books published in by Doubleday/Anchor at the time. I reread the book again after many years about two years ago and find it is still one of the best of its genre. Blanchard presents his topic well. I love his book "The Snowflake Man" about Snowflake Bentley, but still rate this as his best. Blanchard, now retired, told me that the material in this book has not been superceded by recent advances in the science, so there is no reason to caution the reader. Blanchard's humorous insights into the world of the research scientist flesh out a well written book. ... Read more

Product Description
Describes how to anticipate hazardous weather conditions, avoid them in flight, and get out of them when encountered.

Among the topics covered in clear detail are:

The Ups and Downs of Air: showing that fronts, low pressure areas, mountains and jet streams really do only one thing - lift air.

Stability: Explaining the relationship of atmospheric stability to observed weather.

Air-Mass Thunderstorms: Describes what they are, how to avoid them and how (if you must) to fly through them.

Steady-State Thunderstorms: Presents all you need to know about these fearsome tornado-spawning thunderstorms.

Lightning: The dangers to airplanes, and which fuels and systems are most valuable (and vulnerable).

Icing: The hows and whys of structural icing, with icing avoidance and other aspects of this flight-crippling condition.

Nocturnal Thunderstorms: Takes the mystery our of the cause and effect of these beautiful killers.

Downburst: Discusses the downdraft-shear phenomena which caused the 1975 Eastern airlines crash at JFK. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Weather Simplified
Finally, a book about weather in plain English.Unlike every other book I read on weather, the author keeps the subject very interesting. There is also answers to long-standing questions about flying in weather that no one ever dared answered that are in this book.A must read for every pilot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product
This product is same as described in purchase. Delivery was very quickly and good conditions. I recommend this product and provider. Sincerely. Jose Pena

4-0 out of 5 stars Talks about nasty weather in a simple way.
This book is for the weather novice who doesn't want to get a PhD in meteorology, but still wants to stay out of trouble. While most of the information about thunderstorms is available elsewhere, his section on icing was particularly valuable. I would recommend this to any pilot who seems lost about weather reports or charts. If you know your way around surface analysis charts and lifted index charts then this book might be too simple for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unreserved praise!
For all pilots!I purchased this book over ten years ago and I try to reread it each spring. This book condenses need to know information into useable "bites," and makes weather interesting and understandable. You will learn things about temperature dew point relationships and many other aspects of weather and weather flying that you may never hear any other place. If you are looking for a book that will better prepare you for the dynamics of weather flying, this is one of the very best.

5-0 out of 5 stars severe weather flying

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
I wanted to better understand the weather. How do systems form, how do they move, what causes it to rain? With no prior reading or knowledge on the subject, this book provided a clear, concise explanation that will help any reader better understand the nightly weather forecast and appreciate all of the variables that make an accurate forecast so difficult.

4-0 out of 5 stars User Friendly TextBook
Clear, easy to understand.Dvd and online bonus. And, I got an A in the class!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
Having no college background, but a great interest in the weather, I searched high and low for a comprehensive book that would be understandable and informative. This book greatly increased my knowledge of the weather. It is a quality textbook that covers, in depth, what other books just touchon.High and low pressure systems, fronts, weather systems, trade winds, jet streams, precipitation, clouds, visual effects, measuring devices andmuch more.I would really love to get the next book that carries on wherethis one left off, but to go much farther will probably require moreknowledge of math and physics. This book also gave me the desire forfurther learning. It's almost contagious because the information is soamazingly interesting.I would recommend this book to anyone who trulyloves weather study.Completing the questions in each section really helpsto hold the information gained.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellenttext, and a super home library reference.
This is the textbook for a course I just took in Junior College (St. Pete, FL). Although I have many other texts and references on Weather on my shelves, The Atmosphere will take the number one spot now.The diagramsand illustrations are very good, and the Appendices are worth the cost ofthe book alone. Thanks, Bill Bell, St.Pete Florida 7-15-99

3-0 out of 5 stars A carefully written well-illustrated non-technical textbook.
I am not qualified to judge the content of this evidently widely-used textbook but it seems carefully written, eg its treatment the relationship between the temperature of a parcel of air and the amount of water vapor itcan carry, bearing in mind the cautions on the subject at Penn StateUniversity's "Bad Meteorology" web site. It appears to becomprehensive in scope to judge from its Table of Contents, which iscomparable to that of other introdutory non-technical meteorology texts Ihave seen. Photographs and drawings are plentiful, clear with respect tocontent, and beautifully printed.

When I say "non-technical"I mean readers looking for even a rudimentary treatment of the math, physics, and chemistry of the atmosphere will be disappointed unless, forexample, you consider something like a Fahrenheit/Celsius conversionformula mathematically taxing. This is the technical level intended by theauthors and publisher however and not a fault of the book.

But if someaspect of meteorology should turn you on when you read about it in"The Atmosphere" expect no help from the text if you want toexplore the matter further:bibliography and notes are absent. This maybe an artifact of publishing economics or a (bad) judgement about theintellectual curiosity of the average college underclassman rather than anauthor's omission but it's inexcusable in my view, even for a high schooltext. It merits a two-star penalty.

If you're a non-science majortaking an elective meteorology course to round out your degree requirementsand this text is on the reading list you could do worse. If you have anactive interest in the earth's atmosphere and the study of it, even if youdon't have a background in the hard sciences, you should invest in adifferent text. ... Product Description
This book has been designed for use both as a text for students of the atmospheric sciences and as an up-to-date sourcebook for researchers in allied fields who need guidance into particular topics. As a text, the book is suitable for advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students, and each of its ten chapters concludes with a short problem set. As a sourcebook, the largely self-contained topical chapters introduce basic concepts and provide bibliographic pathways through the current literature for professionals in such fields as remote sensing of the atmosphere by earth satellite monitoring, solar energy, and acid rain.Four chapters cover the atmospheric aerosol and cloud physics, and four cover the processes of radiative transfer. Extended treatment is given to these two broad groups of phenomena because they directly affect the structure and motions of the atmosphere. In addition, there is a chapter on optical phenomena in the atmosphere (including refraction, mirages, the rainbow, the glory, the corona, the heiligenschein) and one on atmospheric electricity (covering the electrical structure of the fair weather atmosphere, the several proposed theories of thunderstorm charging and a discussion of the lightning stroke).Henry Houghton, a past president of the American Meteorological Society and long-time head of the MIT meteorology department, is universally recognized as one of the leading authorities on the subject of physical meteorology. His book is the culmination of more than 30 years of research and teaching at MIT, where he is now professor emeritus. ... Read more

For anti-submarine warfare and convoy protection operations from bases along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. But Metmen is also a thorough examination of the men behind the forecasts: the nearly 400 science graduates who became "metmen" and were stationed at flying training schools. This book explains the importance of aviation weather forecasts and instruction in meteorology for student pilots at the Royal Canadian Air Force stations established under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Cooperation with the United States military weather services is also examined. ... Read more
