Please do not purchase this book.
I just want to say to those out there considering this book, please do not purchase, suggest, or read this book. I have two main reasons, the second being the most important.

1. This book is very poorly thought through. Although the author is sincere in their efforts they did not take the time to honestly examine the book and ask can this book be a stumbling block for those who are fighting the battle against lust. Their illustrations are just a step to graphic for someone who already is tip toeing the line of temptation.

2. Second this book does a poor job of really bringing our battle of lust to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Their are more worried about strategies than about how Christ' redemptive work on the cross for our sins is what will lead us to triumph over sexual sin.

Please, if you are a young man who loves Jesus and really wants to defeat your addiction to pornography or your desire for pre marital sex avoid this book. I would very highly reccomend the books "Porn Again Christian" by Mark Driscoll and "Sex isn't the problem, lust is." by Joshua Harris.

Careful Parents....
I bought this book for my 15 yr old son.I wanted a book that would help prepare him to avoid the traps of pornography and sexual promiscuity that are rampant in our culture.

Fortunately, I scanned the book before I gave it to him and found it to be full of graphic and titillating descriptions that are pretty blunt for a kid who is not sexually involved.My husband and I mutually decided this was not the book for us.I am not a prude- we talk very openly with our kids about sex and have for some time, but this book puts useless graphic images into a kids head.Don't we get enough of that at every turn?

I highly recommend "How to Ruin Your Life by 40", by Steve Farrar.Awesome book for teens!This author also wrote "Point Man".

Every Young Man's Battle
Arterburn & Stoeker did a good job at talking about the problems that the average male teenager presents. This book is about how people mainly teenage boy can fight his lust and to remain sexual pure.I thought that he had a lot of real examples with real people that made me felt relieved since i didn't go as far as those people, and that it is possible for a man that went really far to become sexual pure if he really tried. He presented many great ways on blocking the temptations of women that the teenage male go through every day. i would recommend this book to anybody there are in high school or older. This book can be also for women too, there are a few examples that i thought women can learn something from this book.

Overall I felt that this book was helpful and encourage this book to men and women of all ages. At some point the book may feel kind of because it was like a long leture, but in the end you would good that you read the things he have to say.

Excellent read...a must for any man seeking sexual purity
I just finished reading this book less than a week after receiving it from my Bible study leader...it was that good! I simply couldn't put it down, it is a great read for anyone who desires to be pure before God in the hearts, minds, and bodies. I am a 24-year old single male who has made significant strides towards purity before reading this book, so I could relate to the challenges, relive the triumphs, but also feel challenged to keep going. Admittedly, the authors do use some 'frank' language in the testimonials that can make it easy to slip up (they reference female body parts in seemingly random places), but overall it's how you process the information that you read. Will you just read the words on the page and not get a tasty visual? Consider it an exercise in your own purity!

One of the best lessons I hadn't thought of before from this book is that marriage is not the cure-all for lust; so men looking at marriage in that way certainly need to step back and realize that this is something we will likely struggle with our entire lives. You are not alone!

teen book about temptation
My son and friend are working through this book as a way to counter the world they encounter everyday.As teens, I feel they must be proactive to keep out of the grip of premarital sexuality on many levels, and this book is written in such a way that makes a boy think and work on his priorities.It allows them to see a different way to live, without looking like a freak!It's an excellent tool, especially when a young adult male or father reads and discusses with a teen in a non-threatening, but very real way. ... i am going through this book right now, about a third of the way done.i really like that it talks to everyone, single men and women, husbands and wives.at the end of every chapter are questions that can bring some insight. . . ..
after i finish reading it i will be sending it to my fiance.

This book has changed my marriage
I'm a new born Christian with many challenges in my marriage and this book has been a blessing in my life. I have read it 2 times and both have been of great help and understanding the basic principles of God's design of our marriage. Believing the Bible is God's Word is a must if you plan to read this book and let God speak to you. Basically you will understand what God intended about marriage since the beginning, the holly design of God's vision about marriage and what is expected from you as a man in this relationship.
Finally... many answers have come into my life and now I can see and live the fruit of this understanding in my marriage. My marriage is changing and not because of what my wife has changed but because of what God has changed in me. The best is yet to come, I can see and feel the power of God working in my wife, just because of my understanding of my duties in our covenant.

Excellent Message
I enjoy this authors writing, and the book really didn't tell me anything I didn't already know overall, however sometimes you have to hear it again, chew the cud, meditate on it, and then live in it. What were new to me or eye opening is how she correlated God's relationship to Isreal, Christ with the Church, to male & female roles and relationships that will build to marriages and the future of society and the Church.

A woman who truly knows about men!
Here is a woman I met few weeks ago when she visited the church I attend. She was there for a seminar which completely enlightened my mind on the depth of this young lady's knowledge on Men/Women affair. The Battles for our Soul
I believe this is a good book that gives good insight in advice if your struggling with an addiction as mentioned in the book, and your following God. No one said it would be easy to take up your cross daily and follow God. I picked up this book because I am struggling with one such addiction. His book he gives funny examples that other men to fail to live by and funny examples that he mentions that he has encountered during his ministry. Although I haven't been truly 'healed' by it yet I know through faith in God, good fellowship with other Christian men that anything can be achieved through our Lord almighty. This book is also essential to men who feel alone, discomfort and have no one to turn to- we should comfort one another and tell our struggles. At the end of the book he lives an outline how to win those battles.

This is a must read for every Man.It is spiritually up lifting and you don't have to be a preacher to get it.

A Must Read for Men
Right on target! I've read Maxwell, Morley, and now Perkins. Bill Perkins write's to heart of men's issues in a Personal, Powerful and Practical way. His insights to David's Mighty Men reminds us of God's power and grace in transforming our lives. I needed to be reminded about the six battles that
we as men must fight and win. The first two, our positionin Christ and God's holiness are foundational to the other four. I really appreciated Bill's honesty and humility...and humor! It cut to my heart...reminding me to fight the good the good fight on a daily basis. This book is a must read for men...because it's straight forward...a man's book, it's simple to read...most men are not readers and it's memorable. Also, the four daily disciplines are achievable.

Now I'm going to reread it...applying it to my life. I need to refocus and recommit myself to the 4 daily disciplines...so I can walk and live victoriously in Christ. By God's grace and power I earnestly desire to impact the world for Jesus...to be one the Mighty Men!

Excellent small group guide with hard hitting topics
I used this book to lead a small men's bible study at my work with great results!The format and material is great for facilitating good discussion.Each week we would cover a new chapter, and most of the times we would feel like we were kicked in the gut.This book makes you take a hard look at yourself and your role as a spiritual leader within our families.It helped us all realize the importance of our role as a spiritual leader and all the impacts it has on our wives and children.

I have given this as a gift to everyone of my brothers in Christ.
This devotional is one that I both love and hate. I love how it guides me to places I need to be and how it causes me to examine my life. Patrick Morley writes like he has known me for years, and discusses subjects that don't normally come up in my conversation.

Then there are the days I read this devotion, and I get nailed. I get exposed in Morley's critical eye as he directs me to a condition I have, that as a believer I should not have, and don't want to admit I have it and most certainly don't want to give it up. But through the author's carefully selectedwords, and time, I find great benefits in giving up that coveted thing, idea, habit, etc.

My favorite line in the book is: "There is a God who is and a god we want. The two are not the same."
Morley will guide you through the two, and help you gain depth and closeness to the God who is, and become freed from the god we want.

Wonderful book for personal reading or small group studies
This book is fantastic!I read it on my own, and then as part of a mens small group Bible study.Both times it was incredibly helpful and enjoyable.This book just makes sense, and gets you to think about these disciplines as necessary steps without talking down or getting preachy.Reading a new chapter each week helped give me a new focus for the week, and before moving on to the new week, I had already established a new habit.Would recommend or gift this book to any man!

A Good Start, but not Deep Enough
A Man's Guide to the Spiritual Disciplines is Patrick Morley's discourse on the spiritual disciplines for men. Morley is most famous for The Man in the Mirror, and other titles of similar names. He is the CEO of his own business, and helps men reach their full potential. At least that's what the dust jacket says.

The book is surprisingly shallow, and is more like a list of the spiritual disciplines. Morley doesn't really get deep into a relationship with God. He merely gives some practices that men should adhere to just because they're good things to do.

I also got the feeling that some of the disciplines he described were made up just to stretch the book to 12 chapters. This book doesn't really do anything wrong; it just doesn't do much right, either. It would probably be a great book for any new Christian who's trying to get a handle on what their faith should look like. But anyone interested in deeper reading should look elsewhere.

For normal guys - If you've ever been overwhelmed by the spiritual disciplines, or just don't know where to start
One of the hardest things a man faces when he walks in the church for the first time, or the first time in a long time, is the way everyone walks around using vocabulary he doesn't get, using words that mean different things outside the church than inside the church, and acting like everyone knows what they're talking about. No topic is perhaps more discussed but less understood by the average guy - not Joe SuperChristian, but a regular guy - than the area of spiritual disciplines.

This book is quite simply the best introduction to the spiritual disciplines I've read. My initial reaction was that it was a little broad and not too deep. But then I realized that's the genius of it! It's not so deep that you can never finish it. I've talked to plenty of guys that have started books on spiritual disciplines and never finished them. You will finish this book. It will give you a great "first step" towards deepening your relationship with God.

In addition, it's written specifically to men. It's not all touchy and feely, nor is it overly academic. It talks about areas of a man's life that he might not have ever thought of having to do with spiritual disciplines.

After you've read this and the regular practice of paying attention to God becomes a part of your life, you might very well want to read Bridges or Whitney.

So who should read this book? Anyone who is:
- mystified by all the "spiritual disciplines" vocabulary
- tried and failed to to "do" spiritual disciplines
- frustrated that they don't "get" spiritual disciplines
- a disciplemaker interested in helping other guys begin to build a life that is centered on God and what His will is
- a regular guy who wants to give more of his life over to God's direction

Just another list...
If you are looking for milk, this book is for you.The Christian world (especially that of the fledgling men's ministry) needs less superficial lists, and much more depth.Morley's book fits into the first group.His "Man in the Mirror" stuff is half way decent...I'm left wondering where this book came from???Is this what we get when publishers deadlines and contractual agreements need to be fulfilled?

Real substance can be found in "The Life of a God-Made Man" by Dan Doriani [ISBN 1-58134-308-6] Just look at his preface:

...This book is a proposal and a protest.It protests all the books that reduce the life of a Christian man to a string of techniques and how-to lists. It proposes instead that the course of the Christian man is the course of his God.It protests all the lists of four steps for building lasting friendships, five techniques for building obedient children, and seven methods for loving your wife.To avoid man-made lists, we will spend more time exploring Bible text than typical men's books do.It also proposes that we focus on character over technique and law. That conviction shapes this book.Instead of starting with laws and guidelines for godly living, we will consider the nature of God first. ...

Morley's book has a nice preface also.But Doriani's book delivers.

Incredibly shaming and repressive
Human beings are sexual by nature, through hormones, for the propagation of the species. Regardless of how you feel about population control or anything else, you should not be ashamed of the natural feelings your body goes through because of what one religion says. Yes, you should have morals. No, you should not be promiscuous if in a loving relationship. But you should never feel that some sort of eternal damnation awaits you as the result of a natural human process.

If you are very serious about your values, this book is must for men.I certainly now have a very different perspective on my own issues.the book is great and the workbook helps have a more through view of the subject of Sexual Obedience.

The introduction and middle sections are great. They are very well developed, offering several testimonies, which aren't afraid to give readers strong visuals and descriptions of the dangers.

However, as the book nears its end, it actually refrains from providing as detailed advice and guidance from earlier chapters. Instead, it turns into an advertisement for the other books in the series, which are sadly none too different from this edition.

An excellent read for any man struggling with purpose
I have a bad habit of reading the first few chapters of a new book and then moving on to another one.This was not the case with this book.The author has an easy-to-read style and I could relate to many of his struggles with meaning and purpose.I don't believe the story is meant to answer any deep theological questions, but to send you on a journey of asking yourself what it means to be a man in today's society.I would highly recommend giving this book as a high school graduation present or buying it for yourself no matter what your age is.

"Untamed" a great book on becoming a man
I discovered Xan's book about a year ago as I was looking for books to review for the Men's newsletter I write. I wanted something that would really challenge men, especially young men as they grow in their journey of godly manhood.

I wasn't disappointed. Xan is very open and real with his struggles about learning what it is to be a godly man.He writes about things young men need from older men as we journey together down the road of godly manhood and I was deeply encouraged by his book to the point I actually contacted Xan and learned about the ministry for young men that he's started. I am excited and encouraged when I hear from Xan and I highly recommend his book for all men, no matter what your age is!

Great Book for Teenager Boys
I have been going through this book with a small group of teenager boys. It's great, has topics that are very real to life. Guys are really enjoying this read.

Xan is the real deal in life and in this book gets transparent to help other young men
I first met Xan in March of 2003 at a men's retreat in Colorado, we were both just recently out of college and I remember him sharing his early chapters and work on this book with me. It is rare for a author to get his first book published so young (he isn't even 30 yet) and to do such a great job in really sharing the message of this book of what it is to be a real man for God at our age. What readers I think will find as one of the book's greatest features is that Xan doesn't hide or sugar coat his journey to where he is now as a young man.

In working with Desired Life Ministries in Overland Park, KS and havinga heart a lot like Xan's for young men's ministry I am proud to say that the man behind the book really is a real man of God who has what it takes. It is rare to find other young men with a heart and passion like Xan to help take real masculinity to other young men in our world and this book does such a great job of taking the reader along the journey of young men today. My journey wasn't like Xan's in the same ways, but the questions he had and the issues of the heart he had all young men to some degree go through and face. This book is not a book with all the answers and a how to guide, its a book that has a message that young men can learn from hidden in the story of his journey. The things that Xan learns and goes through are the very kind of things that have shaped me in their unique ways into the man I have become at 26 as well. I believe that this book will be a great guide and help to young men with questions on the journey to becoming real men as well as help women under stand the heart of young men as well. Older men I think will also find many of the things they went through as young men in this book and help to remind them of what their sons are going through at this age.

Xan is a new author and working hard to take what God has given him to impact others, after you read the book if it impacts your life be sure to tell other young men about this book too. I believe we can see a change in the young men today in and out of the church - entering into initiation by God in becoming men of God through the work and ministry of men like Xan.

must read for all men
I almost did not pick this book while shopping, well am glad I did cos it became my top pick that day. I stuck to it till i finished it,and carried it everywhere. I found it clear in message and presentation. Rick excellently presented the journey to manhood & hit on important components of being a man that is forgotten or misinterpreted. It is an inspiring guide to becoming real Man of honor as we were made to be! I highly recommend this book...

A little short of scripture
We are using this book as a men's Bible study and find it a little short on scripture references. The author has a good way of using movie titles to bring his message across. Would recommend it as a reading book.

"The Power of a Man" is an easy to read book on what it means to be a man. In our day and age, we are constantly being bombarded by what it means to be a man. These messages are sometimes more confusing then helpful. What Rick Johnson is able to do in this book, is clear away the misconceptions and help men understand genuine manliness; not only to understand but to be proud of being a man. However, it also puts men to the task of taking responsibility for their actions. When men understand who they are, they no longer can excuse their poor decisions. Instead they have to take responsibility for the role and place that they are intended for as men.

Future Men
This book is one of our "often-quoted" books.We find the lessons coming back into our heads years after we read it.It has been very helpful for us raising our son.Although it is controversial, Doug Wilson's idea that you teach your son how to do things before the world teaches them is a good idea.I don't own a gun nor have any use for a gun, I will try to give my son an appreciation for proper and self-controlled enjoyment of alcoholic drinks before the world does.We do pray that he will be a Future Man.

The Best general book on raising sons you will find
Every book in Wilson's family series is good, but this is my favorite.It avoids current fads and deficiencies while addressing current needs and dangers.The section on men, boys, and worship is worth its weight in gold - truly a 'selah' section; and his bibliography/acknowledgments section is quite helpful too.Here is a video link of the author discussing the idea behind the book: [...].

Masculine worship does not exclude women in the same way that feminine worship excludes men. Women flourish when men take spritual responsibility. Men wither or stay away when women lead in the church. So the church is not a men's club - men, women, children, and babies gather before the Lord together. Masculine worship is not worship for men; it is worship in which men fulfill their responsibilities to others. As a result of masculine leadership, women and children are free to contribute to worship rightly. But they do so because men have taken responsibility. In a Scriptural worship service, both masculine and feminine elements will be present, but the masculine will be dominant, in a position of leadership. The individualization of piety has meant that individual men must try to learn how to think like a bride. They don't do this very well, and so they stay away. Those who learn to do it well may develop another problem - they may become effeminate.

Music has been one of the chief culprits in the feminization of the church. THE CURRENT EMPHASIS ON 'FEELING WORSHIPFUL' IS FRANKLY MASTURBATORY, WHICH IN MEN PRODUCES A COWARDLY AND EFFEMINATE RESULT. The fact that the church has largely abandoned the singing of psalms means that the church has abandoned a songbook that is thoroughly masculine in its lyrics. The writer of most of the psalms was a warrior, and he knew how to fight the Lord's enemies in song. We must return to a world of vigorous singing, vibrant anthems, more songs where the tenor carries the melody, open fifths, and glory.

Every dad should read this book
A thought-provoking guide on training up boys and young men in biblical masculinity. Drawing heavily from the Book of Proverbs, his observations of our culture, and his own experience as a father, Wilson gives much fresh and practical teaching on this important subject. Raising boys is one of the greatest duties and privileges in the world; we dare not take it lightly.

Douglas Wilson touches all the bases in this book. In chapter one, he outlines his premise. He points out that boys are future men and that as men their calling is summed up in five terms: Lords, Husbandmen, Saviors, Sages, and Glory-Bearers. He gives a brief summary of each of these and then moves on to show how Biblical masculinity is being replaced by effeminacy. This problem, Wilson shows, is not only existent in the world but also in the church. He presses the need for masculine hymns to take the place of romantic and flowery songs, the need for men to lead their households and be an example for their boys, and the importance of training boys to work. These are only a few of the issues addressed in "Future Men."

Great Book
This is an excellent book showing how Daniel exemplified a Godly man in his day and how we can be like Daniel in our day.Must read for Christian men.The book is full of wisdom.

This is a great resource that finds it's anchor in the truth of God's Word.

As the world gets further away from moral absolutes and lost in the folly of relative truth, it is vital for men of character, integrity, and an unshakable faith in God to stand up for what is right.

Strong Men in Tough Times
I bought this book thinking that it would be a commentary on manhood.I was somewhat disappointed because the book tended to be a little too preachy.The author based everything on Jesus.

I agree that Jesus is a very good model of a man but this book sounded too much like a sermon, testifying of Jesus.

Biblical wisdom coupled with practical advice -- valuable resource for fathers
Similar to the classic Raising a Modern-Day Knight, Molitor explores the importance of the rite of passage for boys to be transformed into men.Molitor begins the book with an historical and cross-cultural examination of how other times and places move boys into manhood which is in stark contrast to the lack of ceremony present today.The best part of the book is Molitor's recollection of his own son's celebration - great ideas, wonderful letters, everything you need to carry on this tradition in your own home.That was the area really lacking in Raising a Modern-Day Knight - the practical know-how, the nitty-gritty of what to do...the why is easy, the what is much more difficult - Molitor fills in that missing information with this book.

Unusual interpretations of biblical characters
When you think of a man of valor, what do you envision? A soldier in the Special Forces? A knight in shining armor? Richard Exley encourages every Christian man to be a man of valor. Dividing the book into seven sections, he explores the characteristics that describe the man of valor: spiritual passion, courage, loyalty, integrity, sexual purity, wisdom, and compassion. He explores these character traits with a good use of anecdotes, Scripture, and reasoning.

Though not strictly a devotional book, it resembles one in that each chapter is short with one basic point. Each chapter ends with encouragement to act on the lesson, a quotation, at least one verse of Scripture, and a prayer.

Exley uses anecdotes powerfully to make his points. He takes a strong stand against abortion and offers much encouragement to men. He recommends that men discipline themselves spiritually. His chapter on the discipline of Scripture study is particularly good.

The book will appeal most to those who believe in eternal security because of his definition of legalism, his understanding of the imputation of Christ's righteousness, and his rather unusual definition of hypocrisy. Though he urges men to sexual purity, he argues that some men, who fall into a one-time sexual affair or struggle with a pornography habit, are not hypocrites and deeply love their wives. Their wives might disagree.

At times Exley reaches in his interpretations. He criticizes Elijah's relationship with God for being "built on power rather than intimacy." (18) He also tells the reader that when God asks Elijah, "What are you doing here?" He doesn't really mean it as we understand it. Exley doesn't offer a more precise Hebrew translation, but his own interpretation of the situation.

His understanding of Moses' life is a little unusual too. He personalizes Romans 11:29, which is a warning about the election of Israel and the Gentiles, and uses it to say, "there is nothing you can do-- no willful disobedience, no foolish mistake--which will cause God to revoke his call on your life." Raises important questions and points to the answers
Wilder summarizes five stages of development. For each he describes the main things to be learned and the main tasks to be accomplished if one is to mature successfully in life as a man, father, and community leader. He writes insightfully, since he has years of experience in the field. He also writes gently but plainly, making clear both that adult males have responsibilities to fulfill, but also that he is an advocate for men who might be struggling with knowing how to reach their potential.

This book is a good resource for men at any stage who want to consider how best to contribute to their communities and families the things that only mature men can contribute. It will raise important questions, some of them uncomfortable, about life areas and needs one might need to work on, but making progress on those things will lead to great benefits personally and relationally.

Can't keep it in my library
There are three books that I have not been able to keep in my library.They are, The Measure of a Man, The Measure of a Church and Building Up One Another.Each of them was penned by Gene Getz.Early in my preparation for the ministry I read The Measure of a Man when I learned that Gene was scheduled to speak in the church I was attended at the time.Within a year's time, he was back twice more, and I read "Church" and "Building" prior to each visit.Soon after his third visit a new church was born based on the principles that Gene had taught from the Word of God.Thirty-four years later that church is still reaching its community and building disciples, though, without me.In those years though I have given many of the copies that I purchased were not for me but for men whom I had the privilege of training or influencing through the churches that I sered or the prison at which I have been the Protestant Chaplain for almost 16 years.Not one single copy was wasted on the individuals that received them.

Recently, I recommended the trilogy of books to a former inmate who was deported to South America following his parole.He then recommended them to a group of men he was ministering with in Bogota, Columbia.Through the study of these books, they gained new understanding on God's standard for an Elder in the Body of Christ, His standard for the local Body of Christ and the emphasis of the ministry within the Body of Christ.That study has led to a solid foundation for a church in one of the most dangerous cities in the Americas as well as an area that is dominated by churches where New Testament freedom from the Law is not understood.

Excellent book for a Men's group! We have begone to open up and share our inner most passion for Christ by understanding the need to be committed to God and hold ourselves accountable to His Word. This book allowed us to move past ourselves and our inadequacies and look to God for our value system and our need to truly develope as Men of God.

To be a real man
Should be required reading and study for all men who have ever wondered what in this life they should be.
