The actual condition of the textbook is better than its description. It does not states 6th edition, but it's published in 2006 though.

bad bad book
My bio class made a bad decision to use this book as our standard text, and it has had such a bad influence on me. I became so sick of genetics after reading a few pages of this book that i almost dropped this class. It is very verbose, dry and offers no or little explanation. It is absolutely one of the worst books I have gotten in my life. And I don't regret at all switching to the Morrison principles of biology as my own text. ... Read more

Genetics.
Unlike most of the textbooks i have used, this solutions book is like an on-hands teacher. It takes you through the calculations of some of the hardest Genetics problems step by step (and with so much patience). U can never be scared of asking ur teacher to repeat an explanation over and over again...it is a great on-hands solution manual

Mendel as reductionist, Darwin as holist
Mendel was a reductionist in the Galilean tradition of physics who got genetics right and thereby started the only mathematical science (falsifiable models) within biology. Darwin, in contrast, followed the Aristotelian tradition of observing qualitatively and trying to explain phenomena in the absence of experiments or systematic mathematical observations. Darwin imagined an 'integrated' picture of heredity that was completely wrong.

In reality 'holism' is impossible as science: every model that can be constructed is an example of reductionism. If it is good reductionism, like cell biology, then the model can be falsified. Creationism, of course, is not science because it does not present us with falsifiable propositions. Darwinism can't be tested at the macro-level because macroscopic laws of time evolution in biology do not exist.,so far as we understand the matter. However, evolution at the cellular level is observable and is well-documented, saving the day for Darwin's basic idea. ... Read more
