Product Description
Understanding the history of health during the past 60 years helps us to respond to the health challenges of today. Sharing health knowledge inspired by history enriches global public health and benefits society at large. With these basic principles in mind, the Global Health Histories initiative was established by WHO in late 2004, with the aim of making a number of valuable contributions to this field. This volume is the first publication within the initiative.

Based almost exclusively on publications from that period, it offers insights into not only the Organization itself but also the political, social and economic background against which many far-reaching health decisions were made.

This volume then, reflects the first five of the 'Mahler years', which saw growing support for the primary health care movement. Thirty years after Alma-Ata, that movement is once again much in evidence; primary health care is again a WHO priority, in a renewed, reinvigorated form. ... Read more

This how-to guide for third year medical students moving from the classroom to the clinical/hospital setting, deals with a particularly stressful transition in a student-physicians career. 4-0 out of 5 stars A nice little confidence boost
The Nerd's Guide makes the first few days on the wards a bit less intimidating, but other than that, it doesn't confer any great wisdom that an astute student will not pick up on within the first week of a rotation. The first half of the book provides the same type of useful introduction to clinical rotations as First Aid for the Wards: how to systematically read x-rays and EKGs, how to pre-round and important aspects of the physical exam for all hospitalized patients. But the second half of the book digresses into a discussion of end-of-life and code status discussions with patients. These are important, and they are well presented in this book, but I did not think it was the highest yield material for a student about to be thrown into the wards for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book When Starting The Wards
I love recommending this book to my students.Dr. Loftus has written the nuts and bolts book on making the transition from the classroom to the wards. This is one of those books I wish I had when I was in medical school. His writing style is friendly and to the point. His book is full of "pearls" on how to survive this important part of the transformation from classroom student to student doctor. My students have a better experience on the wards because of this wonderful book.

-Mary K. Miller, PharmD, MD, author of "Aim Your Brain at USMLE Step 1"

5-0 out of 5 stars Step by Step: How to beSUPERSTAR Med Student
Years ago, before it was published as a book, Loftus' Nerd's guide was THE step by step guide for UCSF students on how to be a superstar on the wards. He answers questions you wouldn't even know to ask yet: everything from the nitty gritty of team roles, time management, and facilitating dispo to choosing a specialty and staying human during a very challenging year. Great clinical pearls.

I highly recommend it! I had no family in medicine, no close friends ahead of me in school, and this guide was invaluable to me.

Product Description
Until the mid 1970s, most morbidity data collected in primary care research was classified using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). This method had the advantage of international recognition, aiding comparability of data from different countries. However, many symptoms and non- disease conditions encountered in primary care were difficult to code with this classification, originally designed for application to mortality statistics and with a disease-based structure. Recognizing the problem, WONCA designed the International Classification of Health Problems in Primary Care (ICHPPC); however, this system was still seen as too closely related to the ICD. A new classification was needed that reflected more truly the patient's condition.

It was also recognized that the building of appropriate primary care systems to allow the assessment and implementation of health care priorities is only possible if the right information is available to health care planners. This has led to the development of a new classification system, namely, The International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC). ICPC includes reasons for encounter classifications and thus is a patient-oriented rather than disease- or provider-oriented approach. Since the first edition of the International Classification of Primary Care was published, there have been extensive trials, particularly in Europe, and the Second Edition incorporates the lessons learned from this testing, together with a detailed conversion system for linking the ICPC and ICD-10 codes published by the WHO, additional inclusion criteria, and cross-referening to rubrics. This new edition has been carefully mapped to the ICD-10 codes, leading to the conclusion that the two classifications are complementary rather than competing. Both WONCA and WHO jointly sponsor this new edition. ... Read more

This book fills a niche for a UK/European text which provides a much-needed summation of strategic management issues as they relate to nonprofit organizations. Addressing both the academic theory and current practice of strategic planning and strategic management in relation to this important sector in the UK, Europe and the USA, it serves as a valuable antidote to those general strategy texts which relegate the treatment of nonprofits to their closing chapters or even appendices. The authors assessment of the ways in which this particular sector has responded to recent events - by adapting, borrowing or reinventing key strategies - also represents important reading in its own right. ... Additional chapters describe vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccines for routine and selective use, and selection criteria, and offer detailed guidance on malaria, the most important infectious disease threat for travellers.

Product Description
Explore a wealth of ideas, insights, and approaches that can be used or adapted by any medical library!

Curricular changes in the health professions, coupled with a growing acceptance of the Internet as a tool for daily living, have contributed to a climate of change and opportunity for health sciences libraries. A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries will help graduate students in library science, entry-level medical librarians, and experienced educators to understand best practices and to build, expand, and improve medical library-sponsored educational programs.

A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries is designed to aid and inform professionals who develop, teach, or evaluate end-user education programs in health sciences libraries. Eighteen case studies represent the ideas and approaches of more than fifteen private and public institutions in the United States and the Caribbean. The studies focus on effective end-user programs for medical information electives, veterinary medicine programs, health care informatics, and evidence-based medicine, plus instructional programs for teaching residents, ThinkPad-facilitated instruction, and more. The guide also examines how several medical libraries have created and expanded their end-user education programs.

The contributors to A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries are health sciences librarians from teaching hospitals, medical/dental/veterinary schools, and health professions-focused universities in a dozen U.S. states and the West Indies. Each of them is involved in designing, teaching, and evaluating user education.

This book will help you educate students of medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, dentistry, and veterinary medicine, plus residents and practicing health professionals. The educational objectives and approaches in the case studies include:

  • clinical medical librarianship
  • integrating informatics objectives into curricula
  • developing credit and non-credit coursework
  • distance learning
  • using new and emerging technologies to improve instruction
The case studies in A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries follow a format similar to that of the structured abstract, including introduction, setting, educational approaches, evaluation methods, future plans, conclusion, and references. Some are illustrated with tables and figures. Several are supplemented by material in chapter-specific appendixes. Further information about specific classes, programs, or teaching philosophies is made available via Web sites featured in the book.

Let this valuable guide help you—and your institution—take advantage of the opportunities available at this exciting time in the evolution of library science!
