Product Description
Designed to reflect the challenges of practicing biomedical science today, The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series combines essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice, demonstrating how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled with the analytical approaches that lead to diagnosis. Assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge, the series reviews the full range of disciplines to which a biomedical scientist may be exposed, from microbiology to cytopathology to transfusion science.

A new volume in this exciting series, Medical Microbiology examines microbiology from the viewpoint of the biomedical scientist based in a laboratory. Adopting a holistic approach to the study of pathogens and their isolation and identification, it explains the basis of key laboratory techniques as well as the scientific theory that underpins them. With a focus on the many branches of medical microbiology--including bacteriology, mycology, and virology--each process is covered in sufficient detail to ensure that students understand how and why a result is generated and the pitfalls of the processes involved. The text is enhanced by numerous case studies, examples, and full color throughout. A Companion Website offers resources for students and instructors, including a fully interactive digital microscope, self-assessment activities, and video podcasts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great TxtBook
This book is possibly the greatest microbiology book I've ever read. It's chapters are generally shorter than average and they get straight to the point. On the flip side, the book has a few errors that the second addition will have corrected.I wouldn't have known about the problems if it had not been for my microbiology professor pointing them out in his lectures. He happens to be the co-author of the second addition to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for Med School and USMLE
This book is the best micro book out there. It presents the key factors of the major infectious diseases and is a must have for medical school.I'm so happy I randomly stumbled on it.There is a little section on each case they call rationale, which is golden and it start with a wide range of potential bugs and eliminate the middle men with detail explanations.I love this book..

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Micro book
great book.this book is great for class or board prep.well thought out and well organized this is the micro book you must buy.don't waste your time reading other ones for when it comes to step 1 this book has the most bang for your buck.In addition to the wonderful textbook examples of classic presentations of the various bugs, there is great supplemental material to be found in the books appendixes of general concepts and even pharmacology.you can't go wrong in prepping for class tests or the boards.seriously, give it a try, read it, learn it, and it will help you immensely. I am constantly finding this book more useful and informative than the micro book my school requires.Do your brain a favor and read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every cent
As a student preparing for Step 1 of the medical boards this is a must read, no-brainer, hands down. The systems based approach style prepares you for the complexity that the USMLE and the COMLEX will test. The authors have done a wonderful job providing interdisciplinary insight to make the hard diagnosis. The piece is well written and illustrated to provide the most 'high yield' information needed to CRUSH the boards. After reading this book, I felt very comfortable with microbiology (I had ZERO microbiology background and still walked away refreshed). From soup to nuts this is the best money invested for the BUGS of medicine!

5-0 out of 5 stars This was my Micro Professor
Dr. Nath has finally decided to publish the Microbiology Step 1 review that he gave his students for years. His review, in addition to First Aid were the ONLY sources I used to review Micro for Step 1 and I aced that portion of the exam.

If you want to destroy Step 1, this should be your Micro source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looks like the best Micro text out there!
I wish I had more than three days until Step 1 so I could read this great book cover to cover. The layout is great including the appendices that cover general Micro tests and concepts. While it doesn't have the goofy mnemonics of ...Ridiculously Simple, it is MUCH more Boards focused.

The photos of cultures, tests and infections; introductory clinical cases; differential diagnoses; and thorough descriptions of the pathophysiology are second to none. I borrowed a preview copy from my Micro Prof and don't want to give it up! :-) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best science textbook I have ever read
This book has now become my gold standard for science textbooks. It is a pleasure to read and the online resource for the book is a great complement and very intuitive.Prior to Micro, I hadn't had a college science class since 1983 and even then, it was only one class.I was a bit apprehensive about this course but the book couldn't be better.I aced the class and loved the subject. Both were a pleasant surprise for me, and I credit this excellent text.

5-0 out of 5 stars BRS books
Purchased it.It's a good book although everyone makes their judgment on how much it helps them. Some people will like the BRS and some won't.But it's not a sham by any means.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized
Micro Made Simple is a much better book. This can't be used for much more than a quick reference because everything is spread out way too much.Too hard to study for a class or Step 1.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not on par with the BRS series
I was very disappointed with this BRS.I have collected most BRS's for MS-1s and have been impressed with the thorough but concise manner in which information is conveyed.
In contrast, micro is outdated, redundant, disorganized and generally not useful.
The one high point of this book is that the immuno section is good.It helped me greatly with our half semester immuno course.Otherwise I would have given it only 1 star.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a better resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review, great questions
This book has covers all the necessary topics, including immunology. But the best part is that it has a total of 416 questions!!This is a great source of practice questions for the USMLE.Still, it could use more pictures and diagrams.Just for the questions its worth the money.

2-0 out of 5 stars truly useless book

5-0 out of 5 stars Best immuno review book for med students!
I am currently a first-year medical student finishing Immunology and this book has helped tie everything together for me. It really helped to focus on the big picture and not get mixed up in little details. I only wish that I had started out the semester with this book. I highly recommend it to anyone that is taking Immunology (or Microbiology) for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great clinically relevant review
This is a great review for Step 1 and 2.I really like the integration between Immunology and Microbiology. If only my classes could be integrated this way.I recommend this book if you need a good complete review of Immunology and Microbiology for the USMLE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide and reference when need to review
This textbook is an excellent review on the fundamental concepts of clinically relevant immunology and microbiology. I purchased the book as a grad student looking for an introduction into both subjects and continue to use the text when I need to refresh on certain aspects of human health and the immune response. The book is relatively short (172 pages) making it ideal as a quick reference guide on the go. The best feature of the book is that the textual descriptions are accompanied by excellent color figures and tables that make it easy to use as a study guide. The last section also contains clinical cases that were helpful in putting the immunology and microbiology portions together in context of human disease. Overall, I suggest the book for college, graduate, and medical students interested in study guides and/or quick reference materials on these subjects. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The atlas with the most color diagnostic microbiology pics.
This atlas beats all the other atlas hands down. I have never seen one atlas contain some many color examples of all the major disease causing microbes and how each one responds to the various diagnostic tests that are performed on them. A must for anyone who is in college for microbiology or clinical lab tech. Each photo has a paragraph next to it detailing which organism it is, along with detailing what the results of the test are and why. No more fumbling thru huge textbooks books looking with the information you need and to only find out that there isn't a photo you can refer to. The only way to learn how to identify microorganisms is by visual learn and when you only have access to the lab one day a week you really must have something at home that you can always refer to.
