2-0 out of 5 stars So-so
I am a second year medical student, I bought these because I thought it'd be nice to have colored pictures along w/ the information about these organisms, however, even though it does tell you, say what virulence factors are responsible for disease, it doesn't necessarily explain why, so you would still need a text book to supplement material that is missing. Occasionally, it does give you specific information but there isn't a clear format to these cards because other organisms may not contain that same categorical information. This results in confusing cards.
Also, most cards don't have a picture of the organism or the diseases that it causes. Some cards do, most do not, so keep that in mind.
A better product for medical students is Microcards by Sanjiv Harpavat and Sahar Nissim, they give you the necessary information and explain why, which makes them a great learning tool.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy a Book Instead!
The cards are not self explanatory. You must have a book to understand the concepts given on these cards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Okay....
I bought these cards because our required text for the class is Murray's Medical Microbiology.I don't actually own that particular book (I opted for Lange Review of Medical Microbiology and Immunology instead) but figured the cards would be good to own so I could study key facts from the text.

The cards are okay.I don't really have too much bad to say about them except that I prefer less info on a flash card in general.I guess this is why I usually make them myself. The pictures are good, there are sections on the cards for Trigger words, Essential Facts, structure, lab ID, virulence factors, diseases, epidemiology, prevention and treatment.Pretty much just the important stuff, although there are little stories and stuff on there too in the Study Break section.

The one gripe I have is that when I tried to activate the cards on studentconsult.com, my PIN didn't work.I did email customer service and hopefully they'll take care of it for me.Overall, decent cards.

Product Description
Medical Microbiology is written specifically for those working in the biomedical sciences, whether undergraduate students looking for a concise textbook covering the basic principles of microbiology, or qualified staff looking to keep up-to-date. Uniquely, the structure of the book is based on the flow of specimens through a typical clinical microbiology laboratory. In this way, the book provides an insight into the structure of a working medical microbiology department and so is a valuable reference book for students working within these units while undergoing laboratory training. Section one includes coverage of the history of microbiology, microbial classification and nomenclature, range of organisms studied (including what is common and what is not), pathology of disease and host defences, basic microscopy and general aseptic and culture techniques. Section two covers the isolation of pathogens from the complete range of human specimens; all chapters feature a standard presentation covering specimen collection and transport, principal pathogens, laboratory analysis/diagnosis, and antibiotic susceptibility testing.Section three focuses on the more specialised areas of the diagnosis of viral and fungal infections; the latest molecular techniques are also covered. Medical Microbiology concentrates on practical diagnostics using the latest laboratory methods, with health and safety guidance linked to COSHH and standard operating procedures. The book should therefore be read by all those working, or training to work in a medical microbiology lab. ... Read more

Product Description
An indispensable undergraduate textbook that covers the critical topic of food microbiology, the second edition of "Food Microbiology: An Introduction" offers authoritative coverage as well as an appealing design for today's instructors and students. This impressive second edition by Thomas Montville and Karl Matthews builds upon the earlier edition's success covering the complex field of food microbiology while also motivating students to venture beyond memorization to a broader understanding of the concepts. Following up on the critical success of the first edition, this textbook presents a classroom-friendly adaptation that has been student tested for level and depth of coverage. This new edition offers a straightforward approach to learning the core principles without sacrificing depth, clarity, or rigor. It introduces the genetics and mechanisms important to specific issues in food microbiology. This textbook encourages today's students to acquire the understanding and skills necessary for practicing food safety in the future. The textbook has been completely updated based on student input and on new discoveries in food microbiology.Organized into five major sections, which can be taught in any order, this new edition adds important new details, including expanded coverage of food fermentations. Additionally, this student-friendly textbook employs attractive instructive material such as text boxes, case studies, chapter summaries, questions for critical thought, and a glossary. The first section, Basics of Food Microbiology, cements foundational material, while the next four sections detail specific food-borne organisms and strategies for controlling them. Descriptions of outbreaks of food-related infections inject life into each pathogen covered. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction book to Food Microbiology
As a practicing food microbiologist for the last six years, I find this book by Montville and Matthews very helpful when dealing with basic inquiries on food microbiology. It is a good book to discuss with lab assistants and those who have little knowledge of what food microbiology is all about especially in the food processing industry where a lot of supervisors and managers do not have comprehensive understanding of food microbiology.

This book is a clear, concise summary of work in the general field of microalgae through about 1994.As such, it is required reading for all those looking to use algae for biofuels or specialty nutrients, etc.Don't look for the latest information; that's not the purpose of this volume. It does however give a very thorough and solid base from which to build. The level of writing is appropriate for advanced undergraduates and above; unlike some authors, Becker has a sense of humor that is both surprising and delightful to find in a scientific text. For me, a non-biologist, this was exactly what I needed in my position as an officer of an algae-based biofuel company. ... This book is very poorly written. This book doesn't define terms, doesn't bother to explain things, and just goes into incredible detail on things that leave the reader lost. I've heard it said that it's for a graduate audience. That's no excuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars really detailed book
I was assigned this book in college. It is definitely intense. However, it's intense in a positive way.I have always found microbiology to be one of the most interesting subjects of science.I have always been fascinated by parasites and bacteria. If you're assigned this book in micro class in college--definitely read this book.I also found Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi to be an excellent study guide for test prep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much info
Extremely detailed, this book covers much more than MICROBIOLOGY. You can find a complete course of GENETICS within it as an example!
This is a usefull book for undergrad's but there is no chance of being able to finish all of it in an undergraduate course in MICRO.
It just covers everything and tries to squees all the info within its pages...
I hope you will have fun studying it though... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology for Allied Health
I purchased this for my Microbiology class and found it to be easy read and understanding.I have read other Micro books and this by far is the most informative and understandable text for Microbiology which is a tough subject. It is recommended even if just to use as research.I have kept it for just such a purpose to use for backup.Even if you have to use a different text this one should be alongside it to help you understand what the other books don't explain well.
