5-0 out of 5 stars Still good, but still the only book of its type on the market
I was hoping to find a newer edition, but 1991 is still the most recent and Carta has no current plans to publish a newer one, even though the language is constantly evolving. The book sells for around $50 new in Jerusalem, and when I contacted the publisher, they offered me a discount; but I came to Amazon hoping to find a used one for less. There are a couple of used copies listed for under $40, but the other vendors here at Amazon are offering it for well over $100, and there are two being offered for over $300!!Why would anyone pay that kind of money for a used book, while it is still in print and they can get the same one new for around $50?

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, though more useful for written texts than for speaking
This is a good dictionary. The coverage seems adequate. I looked up ten randomly-selected words that are pretty specific to my own area of expertise (invasive cardiovascular technology), and found five of them listed, two of them either partially listed or with their component terms or some similar term listed, and only three ("stent," "Wenckebach," and "Swann-Ganz") not listed (possibly because the dictionary doesn't list proper nouns, as it turns out). The coverage of general medical terms and anatomical terms seems pretty good.

A couple of nice things about this dictionary:

1) When there are both colloquial and "official technical" translations for an English word, both Hebrew terms are given. (It would be even nicer if the second edition indicated which is which.)

2) It is well organized, with related terms grouped together. For instance, in the English-to-Hebrew section, under "presentation" you will also find "breech presentation," "face presentation," and "vertex presentation," while under "tachycardia" you will also find "atrial tachycardia" and "ventricular tachycardia."

One smallish caveat: the Hebrew is not vocalized, and there are no pronunciations given for the English, so this dictionary might be more useful for people who need to interpret written texts than for people who need to express themselves orally.

A suggestion for the second edition: list abbreviations and acronyms!

4-0 out of 5 stars The best Hebrew medical dictionary in the market
I have been using this dictionary for medical translations as well as for general knowledge, and found it to be extremely informative. However, it is lacking some basic terminology that I found only in general dictionaries. This dictionary is not for anyone who is just learning the language, but rather for those who are fluent in Hebrew and need a good source of medical teminology for personal use as well as professional use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I own it, I love it!! Could not code without it!!
This book has been a big help to me in my coding career. I use it almost everyday depending on how the doctors write their orders. I went without it for a few years and when I finally bought it I wondered what was I doing without it.

I recently purchased Medical Abbreviations ISBN 9780931431135 which has only 28,000 medical abbreviations because I thought I lost my Jablonski book. However, when I found the Jablonski medical abbreviations book in my desk drawer at work, I wish I could send the one with 28,000 medical abbreviations back because Jablonski has over 55,000 abbreviations. However, I am keeping them both and hoping that the one by Neil M. Davis will be useful somehow.

5-0 out of 5 stars good all around reference
I researched many different books and choose this one.It is the most comprehensive acronym/abbreviation book that I have been able to find.I've been waiting for the latest version to be published and have not been dissapointed. It is all that I expected and is among the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cutting It Short
I do not think that I will ever outgrow the need for Jablonski's book despite how medicine will evolve through the years. There will always be someone writing a medical term either as an acronym or abbreviation, and I will refer to Jablonski in order to understand what was written.

That's the positive side of this book. On the other side there are a couple of things that need to be mentioned. One is that for all of the definitions that Jablonski gives, there are still others that he left out. For example, take the acronym RAD. Jablonski gives about ten meanings, but "reactive attachment disorder" is not one of them.

The second is that Jablonski does not explain his definitions. If one does not understand that "reactive attachment disorder" refers to a malfunction in the bonding between a parent and a child, one will have to seek another source.

This book is great at explaining acronyms and abbreviations. But as far as what they mean, this book is cutting it short.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and up-to-date reference for MTs
This book just came out, so it's really up-to-date; the info is thorough and comprehensive, and I've only run across a couple of unusual abbreviations/acronyms that haven't been in here.Well worth the purchase price and invaluable to MTs and anyone dealing with medical documents!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I use this book in my work every day and find the information well presented and easy to find. ... Read more

Product Description
If your veterinarian told you that he heard sounds of crepitus in your cat s back leg, or the suspicious lump on your dog s back was a furuncle, what would your reaction be? If you are like most of us, you would be looking at your veterinarian with a blank expression on your face, with not a clue as to what he was saying. Not knowing if you should be more concerned, or breathe a sigh of relief that your pet s ailment was not serious.

Jennifer Coates, DVM, a former veterinary technician, realized the need for a resource in plain English for the veterinary jargon. The result, Dictionary of Veterinary Terms: Vet-Speak Deciphered for the Non-Veterinarian, was recently published by Alpine Publications, Inc. Written in a dictionary format, this book clearly describes the thousands of words that one may encounter at the veterinarian s office. Anyone who owns or works with animals will find it easy to read and to understand. Dr. Coates has also included several charts in the appendices, covering commonly prescribed drugs, with their possible side effects and major uses; acronyms and abbreviations; weights, measures, and conversions; and normal physiologic parameters for a variety of companion animals and livestock. This is an excellent book for those people who include animals in their lives to use as a reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK - A MUST HAVE
I recently came across a copy of Dr. Jennifer Coates' book: Dictionary of Veterinary Terms - Vet-Speak for the Non-Veterinarian. Having over 10 years of combined experience as a CVT/CVPM and part-time instructor in an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program, I decided to challenge the book before actually reading it. Over a couple of days I thought about veterinary language that I use on a routine basis, as well as veterinary terms that I use with clients. To my pleasant surprise, I did not come up with a single term or word that was not referenced in this book. Eventually I carefully reviewed the entire contents, and found it to be very thorough and user-friendly.The veterinary terms are alphabetized for extremely easy reference. The appendix includes a common drug reference, acronyms/abbreviations, and normal physiologic/reproductive parameters (a wonderful, quick review for anyone in this profession). I truly cannot think of an easier reference guide for veterinary technicians, receptionists, students or pet owners that I have come across in my entire career. I would recommend this book without hesitation. Dr. Coates' well-rounded background and understanding of the veterinary profession has helped her produce book of quality, ease and simple excellence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vet book for non-vets
I purchased this book for my daughter at a price that was $6.00 less at Amazon.com than at Barnes & Noble. My daughter is taking an on-line course to become a Veterinary Assistant. She tells me that it is one of the most helpful dictionaries for this profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its like..... Veterinary Terminology for Dummies!
I purchased this book after entering school to become a Veterinary Technician. I have never worked in a clinic and I am unfamiliar with the terminology. This book has provided me with practical, easy to understand definitions of the terminology I have to study for school. I would have given it five stars but there are a few words I have not been able to look up in it. Besides that, it is an excellent book for people whom are clueless about Veterinary Terminology or who know it, but would like a "down-to-earth" way to describe things to their clients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Usefull
I use this dictionary alot. This dictionary will help the medical provider or interpreter understand the Spanish language form variations of Spanish speakers from North-Western Mexico and the South-West United States.

Anecdotal Story:

A mother told me her son had "las viruelas locas", the medical professional had attended Spanish medical vocabulary training, and understood the women's response, however he only understood "viruela" (small pox) and immediatly became concerned.

I had to step in and educate the medical professional that many Spanish speakers refer to chicken pox as "las viruelas locas", and I showed him in my handy pocket dictionary the difference between "Las viruelas locas" (chicken pox) vs. "La viruela negra" (small pox).He still asked secondary questions just to be safe, but we avoided a potential cultural barrier.

One more Story.

A patient told a medical professional that the she gave the baby hierba buena (mint) for the fever.A different medical professional comprehended the phrase and performed a self-interpretation based on Cheech and Chong movies that hierba buena was marijuana. He was brought back to reality when he saw in the dictionary that Hierba Buena ment mint, the cultural crisis was avoided.

The dictionary also has a list of local plants both edible and poisioness.

This dictionary is recommended for both the medical professional and Spanish Medical Interpreters. ... Read more
