Product Description
Every year, more than 68 million students of every age find themselves worrying excessively about their first day of school, even before it begins. Their hearts race, their stomachs turn, and their palms sweat just thinking about getting on the school bus for the first time, that first pop quiz, or that notoriously strict teacher. For parents of these children, nothing can be more upsetting than dropping their kids off on the first day of school, wondering how they will cope. Now, they can stop worrying and start helping. As a seasoned psychotherapist, Diane Peters Mayer has successfully treated hundreds of elementary school students suffering from this common disorder. In Overcoming School Anxiety, she shows parents how to deal with a wide variety of problems, from test and homework anxiety, to bullying, and fear of speaking up in class. Mayer also offers easy-to-learn techniques for children including breathing and relaxation exercises, focusing techniques, and tips on proper diet and exercise that help relieve stress. Filled with real-life examples as well as proven advice for working with teachers, principals, and counselors, this is the only comprehensive guide that will enable every parent to help a child cope, build confidence, and succeed in school. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and helpful!
I am a mother of two young children, ages 5 and 7.While they are relatively well-adapted to their school experiences, I wanted to learn more about the issues of anxiety, self-esteem and bullying before they are a presence in our lives.Ms. Mayer's book did an excellent and well-organized job of presenting the problems that children have and how to approach these issues. Her focused and thoughful style has helped me understand these school issues and I believe, given me better strategies for confronting school challenges!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, targeted, practical solutions to issues many children face in school.
As a mother of 3 and psychotherapist who works with school-age clients, I am very pleased to have found this invaluable resource. This book manages to not only to describe and explain a great number of issues and their causes, but to give creative and practical approaches to dealing with them.

I have a bookshelf heavy with books specifically on anxiety, bullying, panic attacks - but this book has somehow managed to pull wisdom on this wide spectrum together in an organized and accessible fashion. The exercises include controlled breathing and imagery in addition to ways to talk to your child about the problem. It's so important to recognize the mind body connection in anxiety issues and this is at the heart of the book.

It also recognizes the importance of nutrition in the equation.Who knew bananas may help reduce anxiety?I didn't!

Another gem - making a little album of successful people who overcame the same challenges your child is facing. My dyslexic daughter found doing this a real eye opener.

I rarely take the time to recommend books online - but this had to be an exception, as I have truly found it to be an absolute gem.

Take a look inside - but just briefly the book covers helping children cope with anxiety, separation, bullying, phobias, panic attacks, homework, tests, fitting in, perfectionism, building self-esteem, conflict at home, learning and physical challenges.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing the big point
The author has some great advice on behavioral modifications, adaptions and importance of nutrition and rest.Unfortunately, she doesn't question the basic premise of school structure.Homework has tripled for most ages since 1981, school days have lengthened, and lunch periods are often reduced to only 20 minutes. Is it really necessary for us to CREATE this much stress for our kids in the first place? Is there no one wondering if this stress is optimal?Performance is not increasing and there is growing evidence that over burdening our children has an inverse correlation to performance.Kids burn out and lose the love of learning. They gobble lunches and aren't mindful of what they eat, leading to obesity.Homework loads reduce the amount of time for play and physical activities, also increasing obesity. The increase in "on task" time reduces the time needed for consolidation and also impedes learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Effective
As a mother of a 7 year old daughter who is already a bit Type A, this book was a valuable resource to me in channeling her desire to excel in a healthy way.

I found the exercises at the end of each section to be especially helpful. It enabled me to actually role play certain issues with her and guide her effectively through them.

As a health and fitness professional one of my favorite sections was the one on nutrition and how that effects a child's brain as well as their moods. I also thought the chapter on getting physical with your child (exercise) was right on target and great advice considering our current issues with childhood obesity in this country.

In summary this is an excellent resource for any parent who wants to make the most of these early developmental years in our children's lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming School Anxiety
In an age where homework has tripled and children spend their free time in all sorts of planned activities the pressures to keep up and perform better than their peers can be staggering. As a parent this book gave me the tools to be able to recognize and understand how to properly deal with everyday anxieties my child might face.It is a must read and a great reference guide for any parent with school age children. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Digital Text Rendering Makes Book Unreadable
I think this book could have been a great reference. I was only a few pages in and, though feeling sad about how much I'd forgotten, I was amazed at how a much I could relearn after just a few pages. The bad news is that the kindle edition of this book doesn't render fonts correctly.

For example a problem with exponents such as 4x6y5x4y = 4x6 + 4y5 +1 = 4x10y6. Stop trying to figure it out. In written math the standard notation of exponent is ^ and multiply is *. Had the book used these notations the equation would have read: 4x^6 * y^5 * x^4 * y = 4x^6+4 * 4y^5+1 = 4 * x^10 * y^5 or simplified 4x^10y^6. Your Algebra might not yet be good enough to understand this solution if you're contemplating buying this book. However, I assure you trying to learn the math and decipher the equations at the same time is a more than frustrating experience and equations that are all numbers are worse...

I don't recommend it unless you absolutely have to have the digital version. I thought I did, but I'm going back to paper on this one. ... Read more

Product Description
These brightly printed colorful charts, cover the topics taught in geometry class. Written by a skilled geometry tutor who holds a bachelors' degree in mathematics, the charts include a teaching component, and exhibit an expertise that can only be gained by listening carefully to students for many years and learning how to successfully convey information by using teen friendly language and examples. The charts include more than one hundred sketches and illustrations, including many color coded examples which help students recognize and retain the patterns of various theorems and definitions. Special attention is paid to those concepts which the experienced educator knows are most troublesome for students. Having a compact source of information helps students to overcome two of the major challenges that geometry students face, namely, to remember the many concepts presented and then, to tie them together in a cohesive and logical manner. These heavily laminated, double sided sheets, are only slightly larger than an 8½ x 11 piece of binder paper and fit nicely into the student's notebook. The student can use each chart for a fast, and effective review before tests (especially final exams), and to check the many concepts that a geometry student must retain in order to do proofs and problems throughout the school year. When the course is over, students should save their Geometry Charts to use when they prepare to take their college entrance exams. The major college entrance exams include more than a dozen geometry problems. ... Read more

Product Description
"Why?"

This is the question we parents are always trying to answer.
It's good that children ask questions: that's the best way to
learn. All children have two wonderful resources for
learning -- imagination and curiosity. As a parent, you can
awaken your children to the joy of learning by encouraging their
imagination and curiosity.

'Helping Your Child Learn math' is one in a series of books on
different education topics intended to help you make the most of
your child's natural curiosity. Teaching and learning are not
mysteries that can only happen in school. They also happen when
parents and children do simple things together.

For instance, you and your child can: sort socks on laundry day
-- sorting is a major function in math and science; cook a meal
together -- cooking involves not only math and science but good
health as well; tell and read each other stories -- storytelling
is the basis for reading and writing (and a story about the past
is also history); or play a game of hopscotch together -- playing
physical games will help your child learn to count and start on a
road to lifelong fitness.

By doing things together, you will show that learning is fun and
important. You will be encouraging your child to study, learn,
and stay in school.

This book will give you a short rundown on facts, but the biggest
part of the book is made up of simple, fun activities for you and
your child to do together. Your child may even beg you to do
them.
"The first teachers are the parents, both by example and
conversation. But don't think of it as teaching. Think of it as
fun."

So, let's get started. I invite you to find an activity in this
book and try it.

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS THING IS AN INSULT TO MANKIND
OK, I am a student in a WA public school and i hate this thing! it offers very little, vague explanations, and thats if you'r lucky. Most of the information comes from the teacher- but what if you are tired or distracted that day? if that happens, tough luck because you wont make any sense off of this book. thankfully, the school told us they are bringing new material in 2011 thank god. The companies gave the school the material to try out and it looks pretty good, so there will be a better tomorrow for WA math.

I'm sad a tree had to die for this thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE
This curriculumn is a disaster. The Washington State schools system has forced this course on our students with terrible results. More than half of our students in high school cannot pass the state's math proficency test.

This course takes the traditional math learning process and turns it upside down. Traditionally we were taught certain formulas or algorithms and then we were taught how to apply them.Eventually working into story problems. This course does the opposite. They start with a story problem and then ask the student questions like, how would you solve this, what do you think the relationship is?Then the book will direct the student to "get with your group and try to find an algorithm."

I am an engineer, I have a very good math backround. As I tried to work with my son to help him with this course I would be baffled by what the book would be asking for. As I worked through the book I kept wondering, if I cannot figure this stuff out, how is a teenager with no math backround going to do it.To compound the fustration of trying to learn from this course the book has no solutions to its problems.A student cannot check thier work.

This particular book is linear algebra. One of the most basic concepts in linear algebra is the slope of a line. There is no place in this book where it cleary defines the slope, or tells the student how to calculate the slope, but there are pages and pages of problems that require the student to find the slope of a line.

If your child has the misfortune of being stuck in this curriculm you are going to have to find them an alternative way to learn math. Otherwise your child will be handicapped in the future job market because they will have been deprived of understanding basic math concepts. ... Read more
