Not nearly as good as the Flashcard version, but still helpful
I took the Middle School Math+Science (combined) MTEL exam in 2009 for the first time and passed.

(Using this book) things I did to study:spent a lot of time reading/skimming the second half of this book, the science half.It listed words used in each field that any sophomore science-major college student would need to learn (allopatric vs. sympatric speciation, metamorphic vs. sedimentary rock, red shift, codominance vs. incomplete dominance of alleles, etc.).I made sure to read the definitions of these words provided in this book, but found many either incomplete or completely missing!When unsure of a definition or my understanding of the concept, I went back to my college texts and wikipedia to fill in the gaps.

(Not Using this book) other things I did to study:I used the MoMetrix (same yellow-colored-cover brand) "Flashcard Secrets" cards, some Quick Study brand summaries and a quick skimming of a few college texts to review and stimulate recall for the MTEL exam.I spent the bulk of my study time going through the MoMetrix flashcards (MTEL Mathematics/Science (Middle School) (51) Flashcard Secrets: MTEL Test Practice Questions & Exam Review for the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure) (they're way more than simple definitions!) and feel it was well worth it.I also took math practice exams [...] and found them very appropriate prep for the exam.

This book will not sufficiently prepare you for the science section of the exam, but will probably do almost-well-enough preparing you for the math section.The practice exam included only had a math section, but was helpful.

The test-taking advice at the beginning of this book (and on its rather-useless companion website) was all fairly basic and extremely repetitive.The one good piece of advice is one any SAT taker will tell you:if you can eliminate two wrong answer choices you will be more likely to pick the correct answer choice than if you don't take time to cross off distractors.Other than that, you'll be fine to skip this section and move on to the meat of the book.

I give this study aid three out of five stars:possibly worth buying, but only after purchasing a more effective study tool.I recommend the "flashcard secrets" MoMetrix set (MTEL Mathematics/Science (Middle School) (51) Flashcard Secrets: MTEL Test Practice Questions & Exam Review for the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure) as an alternative. ... Flashcards:Quite a lot more In-Depth than necessary for exam, but Helpful
I took the Middle School Math+Science (combined) MTEL exam in 2009 for the first time and passed.I used these cards, some Quick Study guide summaries and a quick skimming of a few college texts to review and stimulate recall for the MTEL exam.I spent the bulk of my study time going through these cards and feel it was well worth it.

There are about 30-50 flashcards for each of the following topics:
-Trigonometry, Calculus and Discrete Math (tons of cards for this topic)
-Geometry and Measurement
-Patterns, Relations and Algebra
-Number Sense and Operations
-Physics
-Chemistry
-Biology
-Earth and Space Sciences
-Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability (fewer cards for these)
-Matrix Algebra (fewer cards)
-History, Philosophy and Methodology of Science (fewer cards)

These flashcards ask a question on one side and give sufficiently detailed (usually) answers on the reverse.Most are rather helpful and accurate, though I did see more typos in this set of cards than I've seen in any book.Some math problems did not contain enough information to be solved, had wrong answers and/or did not relate properly to the cards' topic.

Here's how I recommend using these cards to study:
-Break up topics into separate ziploc baggies
-Face a card "forward" if you need to read it again, backward if you're done with it
-I looked at each card once or twice, more times if the card contained difficult or unfamiliar information.For the least familiar topics, I made my own study guides, cards or math problems based on what the card said.This worked extremely well for me.
-As long as you have a moderate understanding of any topic described, you'll be able to use the cards' material simply as a recall aid.
-If you are unfamiliar with the material on a card, start with what it has written down on the reverse side.Usually, this will be sufficient explanation.
-If you are still unable to give a complete answer to the question, look it up intextbook or online.

Use with a grain of salt.It is important to mention that the depth these cards (and with them, my own studying for the exams) go to is way beyond the scope of the exam.I prepared myself sufficiently according to the standard these cards reflected.This was, apparently, total overkill.Being careful, I'd do it again, but with less stress.

I feel that many of the cards could fit perfectly into an effective study plan for the high school level math and science MTEL exams.Having studied these cards well and done the appropriate self-directed study to find answers to cards I didn't know, I feel that I am prepared for the high-school level MTEL exams.

To give more concrete descriptions of the disparity between these cards' depth level and the actual exam, I'll paraphrase a sample question or two:
-one essay question could be, "find the surface area and volume of this shape," referring to a trapezoidal or rhomboid prism.
-amother could be, "describe the purpose and method of use of a two-pan balance and a spring scale.what do they measure?what would happen to their measurements of objects on the moon compared to measurements on earth?"

More perspective:
The cards made sure that I reviewed rules of differentiation and integration including the power rule, chain rule and methods for dividing and multiplying functions' derivatives together.actual questions on the exam never used anything more complicated than the power rule or an explanation of how speed, velocity and acceleration relate "slope"-wise.Huge difference.

I studied with a friend who took the Middle School level Math MTEL exam.She passed as well and said that the math problems and topics on this set of cards well surpassed most questions on her exam as well.

Worth buying.Worth trying.Not worth fretting over every last detail, as the cards are much more advanced than the exam.Four out of Five. ... Read more
