Product Description

A light-hearted account of an improbable side of Victorian England, this history tells of the pet wombat owned by Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the late-19th century fad of owning Australian animals as pets. This examination also looks at the way a wombat participated in the delicate relationships between the men and women in the Pre-Raphaelite circle—particularly Rossetti’s emotional affair with Jane Morris, wife of his friend and colleague William. Fully illustrated with drawings and etchings of the period, this work will appeal to those with an interest in Victorian England, the Pre-Raphaelites, as well as wombat lovers the world over.

Product Description

The vast terrain between Panama and Tierra del Fuego contains some of the world’s richest mammalian fauna, but until now it has lacked a comprehensive systematic reference to the identification, distribution, and taxonomy of its mammals. The first such book of its kind and the inaugural volume in a three-part series, Mammals of South America both summarizes existing information and encourages further research of the mammals indigenous to the region.

Containing identification keys and brief descriptions of each order, family, and genus, the first volume of Mammals of South America covers marsupials, shrews, armadillos, sloths, anteaters, and bats. Species accounts include taxonomic descriptions, synonymies, keys to identification, distributions with maps and a gazetteer of marginal localities, lists of recognized subspecies, brief summaries of natural history information, and discussions of issues related to taxonomic interpretations.Highly anticipated and much needed, this book will be a landmark contribution to mammalogy, zoology, tropical biology, and conservation biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent contribution to mammalogy
Written by well-respected researchers, this first volume in the series treats the marsupials (such mouse oppossums), xenarthrans (such as armadillos and sloths), shrews and bats. For each species, synonyms are provided, there's a text description of the distribution, and marginal localities are given.Natural history synopses are given for some species, but are not yet known for others. The indexing and gazetteer are excellent. The literature cited section is exhaustive and valuable in its own right. This is an especially important scientific contribution, as so many species approach extinction.

2-0 out of 5 stars mammals of south america
This book is very good if you are looking for mammal distributions and sub specis but it has zero pictures. Also this book says it has 912 pages my copy has only 668 pages.I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED with the condition of this book the right upper corner was dogear very bad plus pages 1-104 also were bend grant this isan amazon problem but if you want a book on south america mammals look into the mammals of the neotropics series.I hope the carnivores of south america the volume 2 of the series is better.I hope natural history are covered better in volume 2 and 3. ... Product Description
This monograph details molecular (DNA sequence) and morphological variation of slender mouse opposums of the genus Marmosops, a diverse but biologically poorly known group of insectivorous marsupials of the neotropical wet forests. Emphasis is placed on taxa of the Atlantic rainforest of coastal Brazil, with comparisons made to those of Amazonia. Lineages of these opossums are quite old, likely dating fromthe late Tertiary, and the acutal number of species in the genus is considerably higher than presently believed. Both of these findings are important to issues of meaasurement and management of biodiversity in threatened ecosystems. ... Read more

Chapters: Tasmanian Devil, Thylacine, Marsupial Lion, Tiger Quoll, Thylacoleonidae, Thylacinus Potens, Propleopus, Sarcophilus Laniarius. Excerpt:Marsupial Lion Fossil range: Early - Late Pleistocene The Marsupial Lion ( Thylacoleo carnifex , the "murderous (or 'meat-cutting') marsupial lion" from thylakos - pouch, leo - lion, carnifex - murderer, tormentor, 'butcher') is an extinct species of carnivorous marsupial mammal that lived in Australia from the early to the late Pleistocene (1,600,000 46,000 years ago). Despite its name it is not closely related to the lion , but is a member of the order Diprotodontia . Description Skeleton of a Marsupial Lion ( Thylacoleo carnifex ) in the Victoria Fossil Cave, Naracoorte Caves National Park , South Australia . The Marsupial Lion is the largest meat-eating mammal known to have ever existed in Australia, and one of the largest marsupial carnivores from anywhere in the world (although see Thylacosmilus and Borhyaena ). Individuals ranged up to around 75 cm (29.5 in) high at the shoulder and about 150 cm (60 in) from head to tail. Measurements taken from a number of specimens show that they averaged 100 to 130 kg (220 to 285 lb) in weight although individuals heavier than 160 kg (350 lb) may not have been uncommon. This would make it quite comparable to female lions and tigers in general size. The animal was extremely robust with powerfully built jaws and very strong forelimbs. It possessed retractable claws, a unique trait among marsupials. This would have allowed the claws to remain sharp by protecting them from being worn down on hard surfaces. The claws were well-suited to securing prey and for climbing trees. The first digits ("thumbs ") on each hand were semi-opposable and bore an enlarged claw. Palaeontologists believe that this would hav... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For Young Readers Only
I was searching for a book for my own education on marsupials and was disappointed that find that this science workbook is for 6+ year-olds. This wasn't noted in the book notes. I will say that for the younger audience itis interesting though not excellent. It contains some good biologicalinformation on critters from possums to echidnas, but also has things assimple as doorknob decorations.Perhaps I'm spoiled by having seensuperior books of this nature while in Australia, the land of some fabulousmarsupials and marsupial experts. ... Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Crash Bandicoot, or simply "Crash", is a video game character and the primary protagonist of the Crash Bandicoot series of video games. In the series, Crash is described as a genetically-advanced Eastern Barred Bandicoot who attempts to live a quiet life on a three-island chain southeast of Australia. Throughout the series, his relaxation is interrupted by his nemesis and creator Doctor Neo Cortex, forcing Crash to defeat him in order to put his life back in order. He is often accompanied by such allies as his sister Coco Bandicoot, his friend Crunch Bandicoot and the ancient island guardian Aku Aku. Crash was created by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin, and was originally designed by Charles Zembillas. Crash was intended to be a mascot character for Sony to use to compete against Nintendo's Mario and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog. Crash has drawn comparisons to Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog by reviewers. His animations have been praised, and his voice has been criticized, while his redesign in the Radical Entertainment games has drawn mixed reactions. Concept art of Willy Wombat, who would later become Crash BandicootAfter working on such games as Rings of Power and Way of the Warrior, Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin set out to create a mascot for Sony after realizing that Sega had Sonic and Nintendo had Mario. Wanting their mascot game to be multi-dimensional in character depth as well as gameplay, Gavin and Rubin chose not to base Crash around one attribute such as "fast" or "cute". Crash was originally given the name of "Willy the Wombat". During production of the first game, the marketing director of Universal Interactive Studios insisted that Crash be named "Wez", "Wuzzles" or "Wizzy the Wombat"...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4606420 ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Wombats are Australian marsupials; they are short-legged, muscular quadrupeds, approximately 1 metre (39 in) in length with a very short tail. They are found in forested, mountainous, and heathland areas of south-eastern Australia and Tasmania. The name wombat comes from the Eora Aboriginal community who were the original inhabitants of the Sydney area.Wombats dig extensive burrow systems with rodent-like front teeth and powerful claws. One distinctive adaptation of wombats is their backwards pouch. The advantage of a backwards-facing pouch is that when digging, the wombat does not gather dirt in its pouch over its young. Although mainly crepuscular and nocturnal, wombats will also venture out to feed on cool or overcast days. They are not commonly seen, but leave ample evidence of their passage, treating fences as minor inconveniences to be gone through or under, and leaving distinctive cubic faeces. ... Read more
