Product Description
Mapmaking fulfills one of our most ancient and deepseated desires: understanding the world around us and our place in it. But maps need not just show continents and oceans: there are maps to heaven and hell; to happiness and despair; maps of moods, matrimony, and mythological places. There are maps to popular culture, from Gulliver's Island to Gilligan's Island. There are speculative maps of the world before it was known, and maps to secret places known only to the mapmaker. Artists' maps show another kind of uncharted realm: the imagination. What all these maps have in common is their creators' willingness to venture beyond the boundaries of geography or convention.
You Are Here is a wide-ranging collection of such superbly inventive maps. These are charts of places you're not expected to find, but a voyage you take in your mind: an exploration of the ideal country estate from a dog's perspective; a guide to buried treasure on Skeleton Island; a trip down the road to success; or the world as imagined by an inmate of a mental institution. With over 100 maps from artists, cartographers, and explorers, You are Here gives the reader a breath-taking view of worlds, both real and imaginary. ... Read more

Amusing collection of different sorts of maps. As well presenting mapping data as resolving problems in visualization of knowledge. Very inspiring for designers, writers and people ordering some information.

A rich assortment of =visual interpretations of the idea of mapping.. I have used this book as an inspiration and resource for my art classes-- and was so happy to discover it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
I used a graphic design class I teach as an excuse to purchase this book (I've been wanting it for a while). My students are loving it as much as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible book
I've been buying books for 45 years and this is the most wonderful book I own--amazing, thought-provoking, beautiful. My only regret is that I waited so long to purchase it. As improbable as it sounds, "You Are Here" comes across as what might be the lush, lovely, and totally unlikely synthesis of Bachelard's "The Poetics of Space," the imaginative joy of A.A. Milne ("Winnie the Pooh" and "The House at Pooh Corner," etc.) or P.L. Travers ("Mary Poppins," "Mary Poppins Opens the Door," etc.), and the deep wisdom of place and spirit found in the works of Annie Dillard and Kathleen Norris or even Terry Tempest Williams. When I open "You Are Here," my heart, spirit and imagination invariably soar.

4-0 out of 5 stars unexpected but interesting
This book was not what I was expecting but it is interesting nonetheless. It is a collection of (mostly) unconventional maps with a few paragraphs written about each. In addition there are some articles on topics loosely related to cartography and the mind. It is more of a picture book than a reference volume and provides food for thought on mapping and identity. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not the book i spected
This is not the book that i spected but i keeped. i think is another edition i think. Isn't the same picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wider Age Span, Covers Subject Well
I was looking for a good geography book for my two children now ages 8 and 12.They have completed several comprehensive workbooks also by American Education Publishing. For variety as well as the need for more thorough map/geography work, I chose to try this particular subject within the "the complete book" series.

I love the creative and interesting ways that map skills are applied in section one. This is NOT a boring book!My younger child is able to create floor plans, lead an ice cream truck on its route through town, draw maps for hiking, solve a mini mystery as well as use map skills to complete a secret mission.Clearly, section one is geared towards the grades 3 & 4 crowd. The rest of the book is more conventional than the first part. That is good since a child must learn what "grown-up" maps look like.

However, the writers got a little carried away with creating "Hamberg Haven County" on page 80.In order to prevent confusion, we skipped that page.Although I value the savings of the combined levels, I do wish section one was longer, and that a similar level of creativity was applied to the following sections.I loved helping the 8 year-old....Not the case with the 12 year-old.Older kids would have also appreciated spy missions and a mystery or two using geography.

I am happy with my purchase. It compiles a wide range of map/geography activities necessary for a successful educational foundation. It is very convenient and a good value for the money when homeschooling multiple children. My 8 year-old and I are only able to finish the first 99 pages before I can re-introduce it to her at a later date. Until that time, I can use the rest of the book with my older child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to maps and compasses
I bought this book to help my 8 year old son pursue his interest in maps and geography. We have only used the sections on floor plans and US geography but so far it has been age-appropriate, challenging, and informative.

My daughter loves this book! She says it is super fun!Easy to understand, and educational! She has learned so much from it!Highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, organized
We purchased this book for our son who is in the second grade. Unfortunately our school district just cut all of the "Gifted/Accelerated" programs due to budget constraints, so we are custom tailoring our own(after school) program for him. So far, he is very excited about this workbook and gladly completes 2-3 pages a day. The sections seem to be well organized, building up concepts well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great homeschooling Map Book
I am impressed with this book. First of all, it has great color, and quality pages. The content is excellent and starts out describing what a map is. The lessons teach map keys, symbols, compass rose (N,E,S,W) and has the student reinforce directional routes, and much more. I used this for an almost 4 y.o and he learned so much. I wish there was a sequel to this book. Great price too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Great resource for map skills!Has a wide range of different mapping options--mapping not only the U.S., but the world, the neighborhood, the zoo, the park, etc...

5-0 out of 5 stars Thus far have been HAPPY with al the Scholastic books I have purchased.
This is my third review on a Scholastic book, I can't say enough good things about these books.

The way they are set up, your child looks forward to the work. The pages do not overwhelm your child, and the pages are colorful and fun, yet it is highly educational.

I have purchsed books from Lakeshore, and other various educational web-sites and books, yet by far these Scholastic books have been my favorite.

Short and sweet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Map Skills Series by Linda Ward Beech!
This whole wonderful series (Scholastic Success With Maps by Linda Ward Beech) is so much fun and perfect for asynchronous learners. It is so colorful and clear and beautiful. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the previous review: wrong book
The reviewer is reviewing Maps of Meaning: the architecture of belief, not Maps of Meaning: an introduction to cultural geography.

1-0 out of 5 stars Western Cultural bias
The author starts with a detailed and well-diagramed analysis of how humanity's ideas evolve through stages such as ritual, myths etc, beforethey finally reach religion and philosophy. Deep-rooted archetypes storevarious psychological fixations, which he shows with art from around theworld. The conclusion is in a diagram with various pictures. It shows`anxiety-threat' on one side, and this is depicted with Kali in all herdetails. On the other side of the diagram is `hope-promise' depicted by apicture of the Greco-Roman Goddess Diana. The message of several hundredpages basically boils down to the conclusion that one must rise above theevil-terror-anxiety-threat side that drives humans (i.e. the archetype ofKali) and move to the positive side depicted by Diana. This is a collegetextbook on psychology by a major publisher.

Nobody would argue with thesuggestion to move from negative to positive archetypes. But a bettermethod of illustration would have been to use another Hindu deity also asthe hope-promise archetype in the diagram. Hinduism is rather rich indeities depicting positive aspects, and there is no need to switch to thecontext of the West when depicting the positive side. The Hindu Goddess hasmillions of forms in which people have conceived of her, of which four areespecially popular: wisdom (Maheshwari), strength (Durga-Kali), harmony(Lakshmi), and perfection (Saraswati). Within the `strength' aspect, Kaliis but one of her many manifestations, Durga being another popular form. And even within Kali, there are at least three levels of worship: asterrorizer to be feared and placated is the lowest view; as Shaktiexpressing herself as the power of nature is the middle level; and at aneven higher level she is the divine power operating through the devotee. The book's author's understanding of Kali is incorrect. But even if shewere the icon of evil, it would still not justify in a textbook onpsychology to make the contrast with Diana. He should not have departedfrom Hindu symbolism when it came to explaining the positive outlook onlife. His methodology portrayed the West as the positive culture while theEast as the proverbial `world negating' burden on humanity. In fact, anyreligion could supply the author with both kinds of art, the dark side andthe light side.

If he wanted to remain in Western iconographythroughout, he could have chosen negative pictures from the holocaust, witch burning, and genocide of the Native Americans, the list of candidatesfor negative imagery being rather long. So why would a college text depictthe dark side using an Eastern tradition and the positive side usingWestern tradition, unless there is also a subliminal message intended toposition one culture better than the other. This is a case where the factsin isolation might be correct but their juxtaposition and context creates afalse impression. The effect of this psychology book might be that clinicalpsychologists will attend weekend seminars on diagnosing and treatment"Kali syndrome", as the archetype afflicting clients who suffer fromnegative conditions.

Amazingly, other colleagues of this psychologisthave been very busy appropriating the pioneering knowledge of Indicspiritualists precisely in the realm of higher states of consciousness -including Jung, Wilber, Maslow, etc. So one team of psychologists takes thecream of Indic contribution an re-labels it as their own, while the otherteam such as this book's writer, are busy enhancing the negativestereotypes about the same source tradition. ... Product Description
This is the adventurous, insightful, and often chilling story of a road trip through a shadow nation of state secrets, clandestine military bases, black sites, hidden laboratories, and top-secret agencies that make up what insiders call the "black world."

Here, geographer and provocateur Trevor Paglen knocks on the doors of CIA prisons, stakes out a covert air base in Nevada from a mountaintop 30 miles away, dissects the Defence Department's multibillion dollar "black" budget, and interviews those who live on the edges of these blank spots.

Whether Paglen reports from a hotel room in Vegas, a secret prison in Kabul, or a trailer in Shoshone Indian territory, he is impassioned, rigorous, relentless-and delivers eye-opening details. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, courageous
If it is not a matter of interest to readers that many billions of your tax dollars,
up to 30% or more of all govt. spending, goes to vast secret operations that pollute, lie,
cheat, torture, orchestrate politics, and focus on suffering while the country goes to hell along with the
rest of the world (illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, pollution, degeneration- and that
is one's average town)- and if it is not news on any level to you how, where, and perhaps
why this is done, then this book may not be "for" you.I think most people are clueless
that we have such an extensive secret "government" (a better word is dictatorship) , so
far reaching and taking so much of our resources.I would think that the political issues
of today , with many factions wanting "their country" back may be traced back to just
these fungal developments in the past several decades.

I felt the book was well written, riveting, well researched, a page turner, and obviously
from an intelligent author. The country needs more awareness such as this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what was billed
Thought the book was rather shallow with not much info on the location, versus a lot of historical perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book That Every American Should Read
No one can argue that the U.S. Government doesn't need to keep secrets. Details of ongoing military operations, data that could harm the economy, and sensitive personal or medical records, for example, should not be in the public domain. But some Government agencies' passion for secrecy goes far beyond what is needed. They hide from the eyes of the public information that could do no conceivable harm if revealed. Worse, some agencies cynically use the "national security" umbrella to conceal illegal activities not only from the public, but also from the very elected representatives who are charged with overseeing them. Classified or "black" expenses, not subject to justification or disclosure, make up a major part of the Department of Defense budget, and a significant majority of Government employees work on classified activities. This situation is clearly incompatible with a society in which informed public debate is supposedly (but not always actually) a cornerstone of the democratic process.

In "Blank Spots on the Map: The Dark Geography of the Pentagon's Secret World," Dr. Trevor Paglen takes an interesting approach to examining America's black landscape. He seeks to identify the actual physical areas that must exist in order for these classified activities to take place. He looks for the "blank spots on the map," the places where buildings, industrial facilities, airfields, prisons and other brick-and-mortar structures have been expunged from the public record. An example is the Area 51 flight test facility at Groom Lake, Nevada, an enormous air base that the U.S. Air Force arrogantly denied existed until the late 1990s. Today, anyone can bring up Google Earth and inspect Area 51 in all of its sprawling splendor. It has been there for more than 50 years (Air Force denials to the contrary). Dr. Paglen's quest to find such facilities takes him across the U.S. and to Central America and the Middle East.

By looking at the borders where these blank areas contact the "white" world, Dr. Paglen is able to sketch out a picture of the scope and magnitude of some of the things that are going on today that "they" don't want "us" to know about. It's a fragmentary and incomplete picture, to be sure, but even so it is eye-opening and intensely disturbing. He sums up his findings perfectly in the Epilogue: "The black world has sculpted the United States in numerous ways. Creating secret geographies has meant erasing parts of the Constitution, creating blank spots in the law, institutionalizing dishonesty in the halls of government, handing sovereign powers...to the executive branch, making the nation's economy dependent upon military spending, and turning our own history into a state secret."

Having first-hand experience with just a small part of the black world that Dr. Paglen describes, I was very impressed that he got that part right. When an author makes errors in describing something that I have personal knowledge of, I must then question the accuracy of the rest of the book. Similarly, when an author gets right something that I know about--as Dr. Paglen does--it makes me tend to believe the rest of his work. I think the story put forth in "Blank Spots on the Map" is very close to the appalling truth. If you care about how far America has drifted from the intentions and values of the Founders, and if you care about the extent to which lying and deception underpin the Government at all levels (and you should), then you need to read this book. I recommend it most highly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overstated, biased, a bit sloppy, but interesting
This book espouses the viewpoint that the large amount of money expended on "black" programs and activities, because it is not detailed in the budget, undermines the foundations of American democracy. That viewpoint is worth considering, whether one agrees with it or not, and Mr. Paglen offers much information to support his case. However, he overstates his case in various ways, distorts the interpretation of certain facts, and pastes together a collection of unrelated information and anecdotes. This leaves the book less convincing to a knowledgeable reader than it should be. None the less, it's worth reading.

As an example of the problems of the book I'll touch on the work at Groom Lake (Area 51), on the Nevada Test Range, operated as part of Nellis Air Force Base. Mr. Paglen asserts that the work at Groom Lake is so secret that not even the name "Groom Lake" can be used in publio. That may have been true many years ago, but isn't now. Indeed, a large amount of information about what goes on at the Area 51 test site is available on the Web, some of it thoughtfully provided by the United States Air Force. I spent a couple of hours browsing this material, and finally I got bored, having learned as much as I cared to know from text, photos, maps, etc. And I note one minor misrepresentation of fact in Mr. Paglen's material on Groom Lake. In two places he asserts that the Soviet aircraft used in Red Flag exercises were "stolen" from the Russians, but that's not how they were acquired. The US gov't got those from countries which had acquired them from the Soviet Union and then decided to use US equipment instead, and happily let us have their unwanted Soviet-built fighter aircraft.

Indeed, there is one truly "black" area at the Nevada Test Range: "Area 19". What goes on there (if anything) is not clear, although there is a lot of mythology about Area 19 on the Web. My personal guess is that Area 19 was intended and prepared for use in projects that never took place, and that the reason nothing can be seen there now is that there's nothing to see. But, of course, I may be wrong about that.

Now, having criticized Mr. Paglen's book, I'll soften my discussion by pointing out that in choosing his examples of "black" programs he faced a nearly insuperable obstacle. There are indeed some programs and activities of the US government that are truly "black", but you won't find references to those in the public domain, and no writer will get the time of day from the government in seeking to find out about them. Those might furnish better material for Mr. Paglen's thesis, but he can't learn about them. I've been on the fringes of a number of those during 50+ years of working off and on in and with the defense community, and took part in a few. The thing all the ones I'm aware of had in common is that they weren't secret to keep Congress or other appropriate people in the US from knowing about them; they were secret to conceal them from foreign military adversaries. None of them and none of their budgets, posed the slightest threat to American democracy. Indeed, all except one of the ones I worked with were so small they wouldn't have rated a line in the budget even if they had been unclassified; if something is big and sprawling, it's exceedingly difficult to keep its existence and reason for being from becoming known. In one case, we successfully concealed the existence of a good-sized overseas military installation for several years, to keep the Soviet Union from learning enough about it to attack it successfully, but even in that case the word got out after a while, and we were visited by a Congressional delegation; by now it's ancient history, long since abandoned and demolished, and one can learn a bit about it on the Web (although not much). There may be analogous "black" programs that could pose a threat to US democracy; I have never heard even a rumor of any such, but then I wouldn't have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, answers a lot of questions
Along with his other book answers a lot of questions. This gives the history of how we got in this mess, and makes the "Bourne" movies very believable. The UFO's are obviously out of Area 51 & its environs, probably a mixture of Tesla and the NAZI "Foo" fighters.

Highly recommend. ... Read more

When they put some of them together, they're amazed to find the outline of a man standing in the middle of the map. Excited by their discovery, they draw a face and arms on him and create The Little Man In the Map, whom they nickname MIM. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ingenious way to teach beginning US Geography
The Little Man In the Map

By Michael Leppert

E. Andrew Martonyi has developed an ingenious approach to U.S. geography. He noticed that there is a figure of a little man with a hat on, formed by the states to the left of the Mississippi River. All of the statesMinnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana, outline the profile of a chubby little man with hat and boots. Mr. Martonyi developed a personality and character for this, the Man Inside the Map or MIM as Martonyi's book refers to him.

The Little Man In the Map states book is written in verse to capture and hold a child's attention, and thus to facilitate memorizing the information. The regions of the United States are taken one at a time and the Midwestern Region, South Central and Southeastern are set forth in their relation to the MIM. For instance, the Dakotas are spoken of as propping up his hat (Minnesota); Texas is described as a chair MIM can sit in, (behind Arkansas) and so on.

The rest of the regions are described in humorous rhymes in order to create memory anchors for them.

The MIM book is large and colorful and will be a joy to re-read many times with your five- or six-year-old. An older child will enjoy the funny ways Mr. Martonyi has of remembering capitals and their states.

The Little Man In the Map provide an excellent elementary way to begin a study of U.S. geography. Once the states are learned, the parent or teacher can turn to more complicated materials to discuss the topography, natural resources and other elements of the nation's geography. This ties in well with a history study, since so much of the history of our country is connected to, and arises from, its geography. Schoolside Press also has a large (38" x 22"), full-color wall map based on the MIM book. They also offer a Teachers Guide for the states book. 1-0 out of 5 stars Why add another layer to learn?
This book has an interesting premise: remember all 50 states simply by following along with a story. The problem? Some of the memory devices are such a stretch that remembering *them* would be even harder than recalling the name of a state! Virginia is a ham. Sure. I get the link. But does anything about New York scream "flashlight" to you?

I didn't think so, either.

This book takes a fairly straight-forward task and morphs it into something way more complicated than it need be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Children Geography Lessons
This book is just so special.I gave it to my grand daughter, Hannah, for Christmas. She is nine and she loves it!It is a great help in US geography and a refresher for seniors who have a tendancy to forget. It tweeked my brain and tickled my fancy because it is so clever.Congratulation to Andrew Martonyi for a wonderful book.I hope he writes more for all children who need to learn geography.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Little Man In the Map
"A blank map of the U.S.A. plus your imagination are all you need to learn the states--all fifty in our nation."

A man in the map, a pack of schoolbooks, a mitten, a drinking cup, a longhorn chair and Old Man winter are just a few of the imaginative cues that Andrew Martonyi and Ed Olson have created to help children remember the shape and place of the 50 states.

Ed Olson has extensive experience with companies such as Walt Disney, Warner Brothers and Sony. This experience is evident in the quality of the illustrations in this book. His purpose, as stated on his blog is"to bring US Geography alive and let kids experience geography through their own eyes and imagination and make learning geography easy and fun."

I think my kids definitely agree. I have been using mnenomic based aids in our schoolwork over the last few years whenever I can find them. For kids with memory problems, they are very helpful. My nine year old daughter especially was quite taken with the imaginative illustrations.

The first section of the book is devoted to the states of Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. When viewed in isolation, they most definitely resemble a man with a hat. The remainder of the book is divided into regions -- Northeastern, Southeastern, Midwestern, South Central, Western, Alaska and Hawaii. I would study each of the regions separately, or to go along with a unit study.

I'll be happy to review this with my kids again. It definitely takes the "yuck" out of geography and I look forward to when they release the title for state capitals!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not a "must have" for young children.
I'd been looking for homeschool materials on the U.S. map and found this book.My kids are very young, just 4 & 5 but I thought a rhyming book would be fun for them to start hearing about the states.

I think it's a bit much for younger grade school kids. I could see an older upper grade school age child getting much more out of this. The rhymes aren't all that easy to memorize or go along with, and some of the connections in drawings and "clues" are a leap for younger children to make. I didn't think all the clues and hints were entirely very clever either. I'll keep reading it to them and going over the pictures as their years go on.I think it'll be handy when they're snapping to more of the concepts this book uses, but truth be told I got farther with them memorizing states just with rote learning, pointing and naming and memorizing just like many of us did in school. I related states to where family members were born, shapes of the states that were easy to see, something that might be of personal interest to them about that state, etc.The rhymes and clues were just more to remember and they got a little distracted with the main objective. All in all, not a must have book for teaching young children IMO. ... Product Description

Maps are changing. They have become important and fashionable once more. Rethinking Maps brings together leading researchers to explore how maps are being rethought, made and used, and what these changes mean for working cartographers, applied mapping research, and cartographic scholarship. It offers a contemporary assessment of the diverse forms that mapping now takes and, drawing upon a number of theoretic perspectives and disciplines, provides an insightful commentary on new ontological and epistemological thinking with respect to cartography.

This book presents a diverse set of approaches to a wide range of map forms and activities in what is presently a rapidly changing field. It employs a multi-disciplinary approach to important contemporary mapping practices, with chapters written by leading theorists who have an international reputation for innovative thinking. Much of the new research around mapping is emerging as critical dialogue between practice and theory and this book has chapters focused on intersections with play, race and cinema. Other chapters discuss cartographic representation, sustainable mapping and visual geographies. It also considers how alternative models of map creation and use such as open-source mappings and map mash-up are being creatively explored by programmers, artists and activists. There is also an examination of the work of various ‘everyday mappers’ in diverse social and cultural contexts.

This blend of conceptual chapters and theoretically directed case studies provides an excellent resource suited to a broad spectrum of researchers, advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in human geography, GIScience and cartography, visual anthropology, media studies, graphic design and computer graphics. Rethinking Maps is a necessary and significant text for all those studying or having an interest in cartography.

3-0 out of 5 stars "What Maps Tell You"
This is an adequate introduction to maps for very young readers. But it does not go far enough. Early readers can grasp more. For example, instead of such large print, smaller print would make it possible to say more
on a page. The road map explanation could have told the reader about the road numbers and the rank of the roads. But, in fact, I would have first visited a neighborhood and a child's home (house or apartment), and
included a school, grocery, church, etc. Manhattan is interesting but should come later. A world map should
be preceded by state, national, perhaps continental size maps. More than one map shows lines for boundaries
but no real comment on political maps and symbols.Overall, this little book could be more useful in helping young students get ready to read maps in classand in textbooks. But it is very limited even for the audience intended.Imre Sutton, retired prof. geography, Cal State Univ., Fullerton

Editorial Review

Product Description
Using the concepts of "colonialism" and "early modernity," William J. Smyth offers a geographical analysis of the most revolutionary period in Ireland's history. He analyzes the conquest and settlement of Ireland by the English and Scottish and the consequences of their often violent intrusion upon the cultures and landscapes of preexisting Irish societies.

Smyth focuses on the ways in which the British state subjugated Irish territories, including a systematic use of surveillance techniques; implementation of mapping and inventories of strategic landscapes and resources; and development of bureaucracies and administrative techniques of law and the market economy so as to obliterate regional expression of Gaelic cultures and practices. What results is a fresh interpretation of Ireland's experiences in this crucial early modern period.

"This book tackles grand themes on a grand scale. . . . William Smyth's great achievement is to show that so much of the early geography of early modern Ireland can be recovered and that so many topics can be mapped in considerable detail. An outstanding feature is the inclusion of more than one hundred maps . . . sixteen pages of colour plates allow the reproduction, in astounding clarity, of some of the most relevant manuscript maps compiled for English intelligence. These maps are an eye-opener to the embedded nature of Irish regional variations, challenging us to treat history with respect for geography." -The Irish Times

"The story of Ireland c. 1530-1750 will always be retold. But few retellings will bring such a freshness of eye or depth of analysis as Map-making, Landscapes and Memory. Brilliantly conceived and meticulously researched, it captures the complexity and subtlety of Ireland's changing landscapes, identities, mentalities, and spaces with great skill and considerable style. Few authors can have done more to release the meaning embedded in maps, whether those produced by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century surveyors like Robert Lythe, Richard Bartlett, and Sir William Petty, or those produced in abundance by himself." --Robert A. Dodgshon, University of Wales, Aberystwyth ... Read more
