Wonderful Survey: Breathes excitement into U.S. History
I used this book for self-study after many years away from any formal courses, and I was very pleasantly surprised to find myself engrossed in the lucid and engaging descriptions, the beautiful illustrations and photographs, and helpful index. It covers, at just the right level of detail, American History from the colonization of the Americas to Clinton's presidency. It gives a big picture without being condescending and simplistic, but also without assailing you with inessential jargon and names.

I looked at many different American History surveys and this is my favorite by far. On the other hand, if you already know the main outlines of American History, and want detailed analyses of particular periods, then this book will not be as helpful, as it is merely an overview and the bibliography is not very detailed or well annotated.

I thought this book was very well put together.The Chapters led into oneanother nicely.I had a great teacher which makes the book worth athousand times more.The cd-rom that comes with the book helped me get anA in the class.Thanks Mr. Brinkley.Awesome Book.

As an exchange student in the US,my decision to study Ap History in my High school scared me a little bit. However American History proved to be avery useful book in the understanding of US History.However the book lacks some organization for not offering a better chronological view of the events,what sometimes lead a student into a maze of facts apparently not conected to each other.Sections like " where historians disagree"present different views in the same subject,helping to review history. Pretty Decent
Pretty much what I expected. Sure some wear and tear, but I believed that was pretty natural. Great delivery as well

Fast Delivery. Book has lots of Highlighting.
Book was delivered on time. Over all "not so bad" condition. Book has lots of highlighting, and water damage. I expected a better quality book.

" Out of the many " who wasted their money on this..
The book does not have terms listed in bold or any notification of important information, its just layed out on the pages mixed in with the rest of the pages, its like finding waldo in china.This is not a good recommended book for college students who expect to find important words or information laid out for easy use, also there arent any examples on the side of the text to show a better understanding or tips.

Well Written Liberal Propaganda
This is a great book. The 10 pound hardcover version is beautifully designed and easy to read. The maps are unbeatable. It's a physical masterpiece, worth every penny of the heavy price. You'll miss a lot if you go with the paperback.
But the text is a standard neo-revisionist liberal interpretation of American history, and should be read with that in mind. The tone is staid, but the content is often an attempt as persuasion as much as an attempt at education. You should read it side by side with A Patriot's History of the United States by Schweikart and Allen if you want to be a fair and balanced student.
This is only slightly to the right of Howard Zinn, but unlike Zinn, Out of Many pretends to be telling the story objectively.
At least with Zinn you know you are reading a polemic and he owns up to his over the top bias.

Good summary information
Nothing can replace a good instructor to illuminate a topic, but this text provides a good basic summary of US History.It is well-paced and sensibly arranged.It held my attention for the hours of reading required. ... Read more
