Product Description
2006 Winner of the Margaret McWilliams Award

1912 was a red-letter year for Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dubbed the "Chicago of the North," Winnipeg was the boom town of boom towns. Overwhelmingly a commercial city, Winnipeg became for a time the metropolis of the west until the rumblings of the First World War ended the flow of investments, and immigration, construction, and economic activity ground to a halt.

Although a great deal of the physical city of 1912 has survived in the Exchange district and in certain residential neighbourhoods, the people who lived there, their beliefs and attitudes, are gone and forgotten. Winnipeg 1912 takes readers on a tour of Winnipeg, introducing its citizens and inviting us into their parlours for an intimate look at the way they lived, how they worked, and how they enjoyed themselves. Modern readers will be surprised to meet these people and discover how different they were from the Winnipeggers of today.

Beautifully illustrated with period photographs, Winnipeg 1912 is a lively and entertaining account of a vibrant and prosperous city unaware of its impending demise. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What might have been....
Looking back, it is hard to believe that in the first decade of the 1900s Winnipeg was the fastest growing city in North America. Where it not for the completion of the Panama Canal in 1914, perhaps Winnipeg would truly have become the "Chicago of the North", given it's central location in the continent. But the author does point out that investment from Great Britain was drastically curtailed beginning in 1912 as the "Old Country" was diverting resources to prepare for the coming conflict with Germany, The Great War, as World War One as first known as. After the war, other Western Canadian cities, ie Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, and especially the port city of Vancouver began their expansion, siphoning off the growth that Winnipeg almost exclusively experienced earlier in the century.
An interesting historical perspective. The only drawback is that photographs tell the story, and this book needs a lot more photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The in-depth story of Winnipeg Canada's growth within the context of a successive and prosperous economy
Winnipeg 1912 by Jim Blanchard is the in-depth story of Winnipeg Canada's growth within the context of a successive and prosperous economy. Blanchard leads the reader though the great city during the height of its development, a time in which its population had nearly tripled in 40 years, the 170,000 population was largely made up of energetic youth, under the age of forty, and the cosmopolitan diversity had become Canada's liveliest city. Highly recommended to the non-specialist general reader with an interest in Canadian regional history, Winnipeg 1912 is an informative and interesting read for all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Accurate Account of the German Immigrant Experience in Winnipeg...
It is interesting to note that the ethnic Germans who re-located to Winnipeg, Manitoba in the post World War Two era had an easier time fitting in than did the ethnic Germans to moved to West Germany in the 1970s era.
One would have thought that those who moved to Canada would have had a more difficult time, having to learn English, and trying to be welcomed to a country that fought NAZI German just a few years earlier.Yet due to the fact that Winnipeg was (and still is) a city of immigrants, these ethnic Germans very quickly established themselves, and perhaps assimilated too quickly; witness all the first born children in the New World who refused to speak the language of their parents, even at home!!
By stark contrast, those ethnic Germans who migrated to West Germany were shocked to find they were considered foreigners by the West Germans. These people thought they returning to the "Home Country" but almost two centuries of isolation from Germany itself resulted in them "returning" to a country that was totally foreign to them.
Looking at the broader picture, this account proves that Canada, and the United States, as countries built on welcoming immigrants, are more tolerant to new comers than are the old European countries.Ironic, considering how the Liberal Elite like to think of Europe as being so "progressive".

PS On a lighter note, it was interesting to note the book's references to
Winnipeg's West End, the Langes Bakery, the German Mission Baptist
Church, etc, all of which I am familiar with as someone who was the
first person from my family (who came from Volhynia) who was born in
Winnipeg !!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly crafted and deftly presented study
While immigration is usually considered to be moving from a country of origin to a foreign nation, it can also refer to ethnic populations returning from their present country to the one from which their ancestors had originated in an earlier migration. Such was the case for groups of ethnic Germans located within the borders of the Soviet Union who, during the years of the Cold War, migrated out of the Soviet Union, some to Canada during the late 1940s and early 1950s, some to West Germany during the early 1970s. This is the subject of a seminal study by academician Hans Werner (Professor of History, University of Winnipeg) who found that those ethnic Germans settling in Winnipeg, Canada expected to have to learn a new language, adjust to different customs, and generally assimilate into an society and culture unlike that with which they had drown up. Professor Werner then contrasts this group's expectations and experiences with those of the later group of ethnic Germans from the Soviet Union who settled in Bielefeld, Germany, thinking that they were essentially 'coming home' to a culture, language, and society within which they would quickly and easily assimilate. Drawing upon illustrative oral accounts and writings from members of each of these groups of emigres, "Imagined Homes: Soviet German Immigrants In Two Cities" is a seminal sociological study employing a cross-cultural comparative framework that also encompasses the factors of how the receiving societies viewed the new arrivals, the impact of secularization, evolving sexual mores, and media revolutions influenced the perceptions of all sectors of the receiving communities, and how these factors impacted the two diverse immigrant experiences. A superbly crafted and deftly presented study, "Imagined Homes" is especially recommended reading for students of 20th Canadian History, 20th Century German History, and Immigration Studies, as well as a valued addition to academic library 20th Century Sociological Studies reference collections. ... Product Description
Get to know Manitoba with the stories of over 500 names, ranging from the humorous to the historic.Communities included are particularly rich with an array of whimsical, descriptive, historical and aboriginal names. Perhaps because of our frontier heritage, towns and cities in North America come named after all manner of unlikely people, places and things, and they come in dozens of languages, all of which add interest and color to the stories behind the names.Manitoba's names stand with the best. From a town named after a baking powder can to the village of Dropmore, whose town fathers couldn't decide on a name until they'd had "a drop more" from a shared bottle; towns in Manitoba have been named after everything from bacon to ducks. One village was named after a local species of tree by local residents who only discovered later that they had been mistaken about just what kind of tree they had growing in the town. Other Manitoba communities have been named after early residents, prominent people, local incidents, former homes in other places and Indian legends. No matter if you're from Manitoba or someplace far away the stories behind the names on Manitoba's map make for stories that seem hilariously unbelievable, but that really are true. They also help illuminate the history and culture of Western Canada. ... Read more
