Carol Griffin's Fragments of my Life, A Journal About Manic Depression And Its Companion Illnesses was written for people with manic Depressive illness and its companion illnesses.

This book offers family and friends a glimpse of life with a brain disease.

Carol first knew she was not like other people when she was sixteen years old, however she would not get help until she was forty, despite a family history of mental illness. At the time of her diagnosis the Food and Drug Administration had just approved lithium and life became bearable for her.

In 1994 Carol was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, often a companion to manic depression. She calls the two illnesses the dynamic duo. Despite her illness she worked 24 years in career positions which she picked carefully to fit her illness.

Hope and understanding are what this book has to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review:Medicines for Mental Health, author Kevin Thompson Ph.D.
Kevin Thompson wrote Medicines For Mental Health, The Ultimate Guide to Psychiatric Medication because the book needed to be written and read by those of us who are experiencing some form of mental illness. Those of us who experience depression and other forms of mental illness typically go to psychiatrists for help.Psychiatrists prescribe drugs to assist us in living our daily lives. The selection of the appropriate drug with the appropriate dose to fit each individual is as much an art as it is a science. Many times questions remain unanswered.

Drugs used to treat mental illness affect the patient's entire life.First, there are a number of drugs to choose from, each may or may not be effective for a particular individual at a specified dose, and each has potential side effects. Many of the drugs take time to become effective.Second, each patient must become an active participant in their own therapy by observing and reporting their individual response to the drug. Highly intelligent people, typical victims of depression and other forms of mental illnesses, often have creative jobs.Certain medications can destroy an individual's ability to think, perform as a professional, interfere with personal relationship, inhibit a person's sexual performance, or simply make it impossible to stay awake. This book provides information to the patient, and perhaps their loved ones, on how an individual can observe, understand and participate in his own treatment.

The author has organized the information in such a way that a patient can locate a disorder, identified the drugs typically prescribed to treat that disorder, gather information regarding doses and periods of effectiveness, and become aware of the possible side effects. The information in the book is not exhaustive from a medical viewpoint. However, it provides useful information for the patient, information either not discussed or covered too quickly by the psychiatrists.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Roadmap to the Mental Illness Medical Treatment Process
This is a very useful book for anyone with a family member or close friend being treated for depression, particularly if they went through a couple of different treatment options before finding one that worked - or if they are going through that process right now.

It was enlightening to find out that identical depression symptoms can result from different problems in brain chemistry and that there are different classes of anti-depressants distinguished by how they affect brain chemistry, e.g., Monoamine Oxidase inhibitors versus reuptake inhibitors.Once the right class of anti-depressants is identified for an individual, the next step becomes a search for the medicine with the side effects that the individual tolerates best.

This book provides a roadmap to a treatment process that can otherwise seem bewildering or random. With this book as a reference, it doesn't have to be either.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Colourful Capsules of Mental Health Care
Kevin Thompson, Ph.D. has put together a
very user-friendly, well-organized and
infomative guide to current psychopharmacology.
Symptoms of mental illness, most appropriate
medications, side effects and their profiles,
are described in a succinct and comprehensive
style.I would describe the guide as elegant.

For my particular interest in lithium, I was
very pleased to read the Q-T cardiac prolongation
side effect warning, that lacks priority in may
other medical guides I have read.

I am very happy to have this guide in my collection.
It is great for the layman with a very considerate
Glossary of psychiatric terms in the final chapter.

This guy claims to be a bipolar person. He is a member of a sexist Usenet Group "BEEPERS PEEPERS" where he is a manager of the group. The group is known for banishing people who exhibit extreme bipolar condition and who are resistant to psychotropic medications.

The book was originally written under the name "Nom de Plume" by his user name "Nom de Plume."At best, this guy is a quack and the book should be avoided at all costs especially since its predecessor could be found FREE in the Usenet community.

Oh, and by the way "He's a rocket scientists!"Do you want someone who is so brash in describing oneself to be giving you advice on drugs that are being pushed by drug companies OFTEN indifferent to a patients needs and condition?

Manic-depressive illness, also known as bipolar disorder, is estimated to affect several million Americans. Researchers and popular writers alike argue that symptoms of the condition occur with disproportionate frequency among poets, a view that has tended to reinforce the stereotype of the mad artist. But, as poet and volume editor Thom Schramm points out, the stereotype exists in part because the existing literature has for the mostpart neglected the intricacies of individual lives. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Depression Sufferers
Unlike any book on depression, the author looks at the depressive condition from a spiritual point of view. And, the opportunity for growth and development from this condition. Transforming book. You'll come away not feeling like you have a disability, but an opportunity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful and inspiring
This book gave me great insight as a person who suffers from depression myself.

I felt the writer was walking in my shoes and knows where my hurt is.

Using it to an advantage is something that hadn't occurred to me.

All that time I used to waste , I can now turn around

Oh yes, I still get depressed, (BIG TIME) but now I can somehow use my minds
"Big downer" through the rabbit hole to do one thing I like on the down day (at a minimum).

I can start small with "ok i'm going to try to play a favorite song" while laying on this couch.
to moving off the couch and walking to my patio where my favorite flowering
hanging baskets are ( I did them on a down day ).. to Wow what beauty there is outside, maybe i can get out today.

Starting small even while the voice inside was saying "what a lump you are today"
and deciding "this so called "lump" still has something I want from this day and you(inside voice) are not going to stop me (strong parental voice)

Now it comes so much faster. I find I can cut thru the "dead" tape in under 2hrs on a weekend with no plans and find myself enjoying a day that I would have spent regurgitating "why am I here" , what is so great about ....

Books are great! if you listen while you read

5-0 out of 5 stars Depression is no longer a four letter word
The Depression Advantage

I not only have bipolarism, but clinical depression as well. All of the books I've read on the topic of depression are geared to make the reader deny their depression; honestly, no one can deny their depression when they're depressed.

Wootton's book is the first to encourage readers to embrace their depression, to understand that looking at the world through the perspective of depression is a gift, a super power, an ability to be proud of.

This is the only advice that has ever truly worked for me.

Wootton's writing style is sincere, honest, and funny, and his book is full of experiences we depressed people can recognize and relate to.

If you ever get a chance to attend a Bipolar Advantage workshop take it! It will change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great hope for living a full life with depression
Finally, a book about depression that doesn't try to make you replace "sad" thoughts with "happy" thoughts. It was really refreshing to find a book so down to earth about the realities of depression that also gave me great hope for living a full life even though I have depression. This book explores what it really means to live with depression full time and not be afraid of it. I especially liked the examples of the lives of the Saints and what it meant to them to live with the symptoms of depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really makes an impact
This book really had an impact on my life. I've had depressive bipolar states for as long as I can remember and dealing with this illness has become the most challenging thing in my life. When I started reading the book I was skeptical that there could be anything positive in depression, but I was looking for anything positive that might help me. Tom Wootton has created that in The Depression Advantage. It taught me to cope more effectively with my depression and how to find a spiritual richness that I never knew could exist in the midst of my depression. This book is not a fake cure all book. It's honest and straight forward and Tom writes in an easy to read style that makes it seem like the author is right there with you. I hope you will take the opportunity to give this book a try. I did and it helped me enormously. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Those Who Suffer From Depression and Their Loved Ones
As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist who has worked with many people who suffer from depression and manic depression, I believe that this book is a wonderful resource for those with affective disorders as well as their families.I have recommended this book to many people.

The book deals with the symptoms and diagnosis of depression and manic depression. It also goes into the full spectrum of possible treatments - - talk therapy, medications, cognitive therapy, ECT, etc.Importantly, the book discusses the impact of depression on family members and loved ones, while also providing support and hope for those who suffer with the disease. There is also a chapter on getting good professional help and a list of support groups that are available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best first book to read about depression
If you can only read one book to help you understand your depression or that of someone you know, make it this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is This Right For You? Tolstoy or Hemmingway?
First of all, one must say that Dr. Papolos has written a very comprehensive book about depression. There are plenty of sections that are written in a non-technical way. He made sure the symptoms of the variousdisorders and sub-categories of them were outlined right out of DSM-IV, andthe information about financial problems that accompany serious bipolar ordepressive disorders is very complete, pragmatic, and helpful. Theexplanations concerning medications is somewhat incomplete but nonethelesspractical and useful (especially the charts). It may have been better tohave focused more on the medications themselves rather than their history. Some of the paragraphs on side-effects seemed redundant to the point thatit became "filler" material. I was disappointed, for example, that he did not give a thorough explanation of clonazepam, an oft-usedsedative, while he devotes pages on medical history, especially lithiumresearch.

Certainly the technical chapters are hard to understand; butthen again, that might be exactly what you're looking for: a detailed, cmprehensive analysis of the biochemical aspects of depression and mania aswell as the evidence suggesting genetic vulnerability. It may even help the"lay person" by easing his or her anxiety about taking medicationby explainin how exactly the pills work.

There were two majordisappointments, however. First, the book minimized the issue of adolescentdepression and/or mania by dedicating only ten pages to it. I do have abias, but any good text about depression or mania, unless the cover pageexplicitly states the audience to which the book was addressing, mustdedicate a great amount of energy to mental illness in children and even asection solely for teenagers who may or may have known friends sufferingfrom such disorders. Psychiatry depends heavily on risk reduction andcrisis prevention because "treatment" per-se may not be able tobe administered in time. Second, although bipolar disorders may have moresevere symptoms, the book seemed to allocate too much of its pages to maniainstead of depression. Both are equally dangerous and painful, yet Dr.Papolos seemed to focus a little too much on mania (dysphoric or elated),leaving patients with unipolar depression feeling somewhat left out. Thatis not to say they were ignored but that there existed an unfortunateimbalance.

Overall, however, I learned much about bipolar and unipolardisorders. I still have yet to find a book about personality disorders, butthis is definitely one of the better works concerning mental illness. Moreover, Dr. Papolos includes a great possibility for another updatedversion which I am greatly interested in. However, these feelings ariseonly because the book satisfies most of my needs. To many, "OvercomingDepression" may not be the right pill.

1-0 out of 5 stars I must have missed something
If you are trying to work through your depression, then this book isn't for you.For the common layperson, this book is too technical. It tells about the history of lithium, it's full of charts, diagrams of the brain, and statistics. There is a whole section on having someone committed andcosts.I'm sure this information may be valuable to some people, but thebook should be titled something else. I don't see how it benefits someone"Overcoming Depression".Most of the pertinent information aboutthis illness can be found in other resources.Save your money. ... Read more

Product Description

Manic behavior holds an undeniable fascination in American culture today. It fuels the plots of best-selling novels and the imagery of MTV videos, is acknowledged as the driving force for successful entrepreneurs like Ted Turner, and is celebrated as the source of the creativity of artists like Vincent Van Gogh and movie stars like Robin Williams. Bipolar Expeditions seeks to understand mania's appeal and how it weighs on the lives of Americans diagnosed with manic depression.

Anthropologist Emily Martin guides us into the fascinating and sometimes disturbing worlds of mental-health support groups, mood charts, psychiatric rounds, the pharmaceutical industry, and psychotropic drugs. Charting how these worlds intersect with the wider popular culture, she reveals how people living under the description of bipolar disorder are often denied the status of being fully human, even while contemporary America exhibits a powerful affinity for manic behavior. Mania, Martin shows, has come to be regarded as a distant frontier that invites exploration because it seems to offer fame and profits to pioneers, while depression is imagined as something that should be eliminated altogether with the help of drugs.

Bipolar Expeditions argues that mania and depression have a cultural life outside the confines of diagnosis, that the experiences of people living with bipolar disorder belong fully to the human condition, and that even the most so-called rational everyday practices are intertwined with irrational ones. Martin's own experience with bipolar disorder informs her analysis and lends a personal perspective to this complex story.

Bipolar disorder, a brain disorder characterized by intense high and low moods, is a complex illness that is often difficult to identify. Each year, at least 2.3 million Americans suffer from its most severe form, while an estimated 10–13 million others suffer from milder forms. Yet, many go misdiagnosed or untreated. In Bipolar Disorder Demystified, author Lana Castle, who has lived most of her life with this illness, turns her personal experience into an enlightening and useful guide for all those traveling down the same path. In clear and compassionate language, Castle helps those who suffer from the illness as well as their friends and family understand the true nature of bipolar disorder, the factors that complicate its diagnosis, and the best ways to cope with it. Bipolar Disorder Demystified makes great strides in dispelling the mystery surrounding this illness, helping readers decide if it’s time to seek treatment and providing those with any form of mood disorder the information they need to better manage their lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for bipolars and supporting friends & family
I really liked this book!It is very educational and really "hits the spot" knowing that someone else can express how I feel, think and act.Hurray for the author!

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm a little less mystified
Having sought help for her own mood disorders off and on since the 70s , Ms Castle is experienced firsthand with talk therapies, alternative cures, and medical approaches to her "brain illness."She believes mood disorders should have no more stigma than a more visible physical illness has, and to that end, she writes. She believes that interventions are critical, making the point repeatedly that lives are at stake. Her sister Barbara took her life in a depressive phase of her own mood disorder. The author also attempted suicide and writes very openly about the problem behaviors she practiced before her brain chemistry became more balanced through medications.
My criticism is that the author attempts to do too much, and in the process, becomes redundant with her suggestions and descriptions. If bipolar disorder is a brain illness, she fails to explain why talking therapy alone is sometimes help enough for such sufferers.Or, in another example she cites, belonging to an affirmational group like Toastmasters. And she does not acknowledge that the medical community is divided in this discussion of chemical imbalances in the brain.Since she acknowledges that parenting and personality both make their contributions to bipolar disorder, she has a bit more work to do in demystifying it.

I love this book. It really helped me with my bipolar disorder while I was in a bad place. I would recommend it to anyone. In fact I recommended it to my mother to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming demystified!
I bought the book for a friend who is a shut in.She has a grandson who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The book gave her the information she needed to understand the disorder and also directed her to solutions about specific issues affecting the family.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trite, But Not Without Merit.
Bipolar Disorder Demystified is the third book I've read on the subject of Bipolar Disorder. It's an easily read book covering everything from depression to hypomania, medication to the importance of vitamin consumption. The information in this book is expansive almost to the point of unnecessary. The chapter on Biochemistry and Genetics was informative. The chapter on Personality and the "Quadrants" of Perfectionism was senseless.

Lana Castle's attempt at intertwining her personal experience with scientific knowledge was charming in the beginning of the book, but trite towards the end when she tells of joining a Quaker church only to leave due to a persistent suitor, or the excerpts of her journal which read like the rantings of a lunatic.

From what I've read, I'm guessing that Castle is a little flaky.I'm glad that she's been able to find the stability she needs in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, but it's mentioned more often that the importance of psychotherapy and medication compliance. The chapter on Exploring Nonmedical Options began with substance, but ended disappointingly with the mention of using massage and aromatherapy as viable options for this disorder. She suggest communing with nature to relieve stress, but then recommends tasting "the sweat that pours from your face after an aerobic workout", for reasons unknown.

The chapter on Creativity is extremely self-absorbed.Once again, it begins with good intentions, but disappointingly segues into a timeline of Castle's attempts at creativity and pretty much reads like a resume of her creative endeavors or like a child screaming "Daddy, look at me! Look at me!"

Overall, Bipolar Disorder Demystified isn't a terrible book. It's full of a variety of important information on dealing with this disorder and the destruction it can cause. The unevenness in joining her personal encounters and scientific or substantial information (for lack of a better word) is not entirely the fault of Lana Castle. The blame should be placed on the editor for not reining in her clearly self-absorb writing style. (She figuratively thumbs her nose at a former psychiatrist for shooting down her ambitions for being a writer! See pages 301-302).

If you roll your eyes when you see a hippie, or laugh at the though of using penny-royale to cure a flu, then this book is not for you.If you are a hippie and have yerba mate in your refrigerator you'll find this book right up your alley.I consider myself ¼ hippie and found this book useful at times, disappointing but not entirely without merit. If you can stomach the ego of Castle, then read this book. When she's not too busy staring at her reflection in the mirror Castle can be a solid writer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for personal library
Stahl has produced another terrific book that explains Bipolar and Depression in terms that non-clinicians can understand.

I bought this book based on my desire for relevant information on BP. I have found the images of neuronal/brain activity that accompany most topics in the book to be extremely helpful and germaine to a full comprehension. The major pharmaceuticals used to treat the disorders are explained in detail, as well as their mechanism of action.

I would recommend this book to people affected with BP and Depression that have a faily high reading level ability.

1-0 out of 5 stars Left hanging...
I wanted to return the book because it was not what I expected. I sent emails, but no one ever responded to say that it could be returned or not returned.

Before purchasing the book, I wished I had known that the customer service would be poor or even that the purchase would be considered a "FINAL SALE".

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
I bought this for my BP teen daughter. She LOVES it!!! To "listen" to someone who has "been there, done that" in a poetry form has REALLY helped her. She could really relate to the poems and was able to explain her point of view to me better by having me read specific ones. I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY recommend this book!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read to understand a bipolar's mind..
This book just came in the mail today. Yes, it's a book of poems and gorgeous photographs. Yes, it's a quick read.

But what is beautiful about this book is how the author gets in the mind and soul. I have bipolar and never had another person describe what I go though daily so eloquently.

Should be on anyones bookshelf who wants to know more about bipolar.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I expected.
This was a good book.

I was expecting it to be more of a novel and I didn't realize when I purchased it that it was a book of poems.

Alicia is an amazing writer though and her poems are deep.

This book took me 30 minutes to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A View From The Inside
Excellent and essential reading for those with bipolar illness, family members, friends and anyone who wants a view of the illness from the inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Crazy Inside
The Crazy Inside is a book of emotions both ordinary and untoward:the shadings of ecstasy, anguish, lust and rage. Each poem gives you a chance to crawl into the mind of a person that has lived through the madness of mental illness. The sheer realism of it all will draw you so deeply into the author's life that you end up crying with her.Alicia Birmingham speaks directly to her reader, using fierce emotional imagery to capture a sort of desperation, a passion more vivid than despair but more urgent than desire. It seeps into you through eyes and fingertips, evoking feelings in a way that only captivating writing can entice. These poems are the best that language can give us. ... Product Description
My doctor had called the hospital ahead of time so they expected me. I was put into a room where a crisis counselor spoke to me. I told him that I didn't feel anything. When he left, an ER Doctor came in to talk to me. I told him the same things I had told the counselor. I waited another half hour after the ER Doctor left then I told my sister that I wanted to leave. I didn't feel like hanging around the hospital anymore. She knew that I shouldn't leave in the condition I was in so she went to talk to the ER Doctor. The Doctor then handed me a piece of paper. I didn't even bother to read it. I didn't care what it said I just wanted to leave. I saw the crisis counselor in the hall so I asked him if I could go now. I showed him what the Doctor gave me and he sat me back down in the crisis room. I hadn't really noticed a security guard standing beside me. The counselor told me that the piece of paper meant that I surrendered my rights to leave and that I was going to be admitted. I just didn't care anymore. They put me in the room beside the security guards office so they could keep an eye on me. My sister had to leave to pick up my kids from school and then pick my husband up at the GO Station. She explained everything to them then had to take my husband to my Doctors office to pick up my car. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars An unconvincing diagnosis
Although Berry claims a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, by the end of the book, I'm almost sure she was misdiagnosed. As a dedicated reader of bipolar narratives, I found Berry's discussion of her "manias" to be almost ridiculous--there was nothing manic about her descriptions. All in all, I don't think the book is a good resource for people trying to learn more about this illness, because Berry doesn't provide much solid information. Berry begins with her childhood and takes us through her entire life, which is quite dull and has little to do with her illness. There are chapters on her childhood, husbands, children, and schooling, and bipolar disorder gets one chapter, just like the other subjects, but that's about it. Lastly, the book is not well-written and the many grammatical, punctuation, and typographical errors are very distracting. ... Read more
