5-0 out of 5 stars Answers, answers, answers
The perfect blend of the spiritual and the practical, this book illuminates so many topics previously mysterious to me, such as traditional Oriental versus Western (Occidental) medicine; yin and yang (an incrediblycomprehensive explanation of these concepts and why they should matter toevery human being, no matter what their spiritual perspective); plus anarray of what are unfortunately still considered "alternative"medical treatments, like acupuncture, palm healing, and shiatsu, and manysimple self-treatments (sound therapy through the use of basicbreathing/"chanting" techniques; stretches for stimulatingstagnating organs). It's a whole body/mind/universe view that helps usunderstand the profound connectedness of"in here" and "outthere" in terms of energy (ki, chi).A wonderful overview book toserve as a springboard for discovering topics for further exploration, butstill full of immediately usable information without further reading. ... This is the first vegan macrobiotic self-published cookbook by world renowned chef, Eric Lechasseur. This book contains stunning full-color photographs, taken in Eric and his wife Sanae Suzuki's garden by photographer Yoshi Ueda. "Love, Eric" contains recipes that were created by Chef Eric Lechasseur as he studied vegan and macrobiotic cooking to help his wife overcome serious medical problems. In the cookbook, Eric tells the story of his love-inspired pastry recipes, and how his pursuit of macrobiotics eventually healed his own crippling allergies. As a bonus, Eric has also included five macrobiotic beverage recipes and helpful tips for making your own macrobiotic masterpieces. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I totally recommend that you get this book.Especially if you're a person who is perpetually dieting to lose weight, or you're a person who has medical conditions that require you to eat a better diet.Macrobiotic food is a great way to change it all around. But, should you miss eating the deserts, well Eric's deserts are an awesome way to indulge that side of you.The cakes and tarts are the way to go.; )

If you are in Los Angeles or live here, you can go to M Cafe De Chaya to sample Eric Lechausser's work, but he is no longer with M Cafe [and there are times I go there and the deserts are not as good as they used to be.].So, to further enjoy Eric Lechausser's work, you can go to a restaurant called "Seed"."Seed" is owned by Eric and his wife Sanae. They have a book together called "Love, Eric & Sanae".Which is more dedicated to Macro dishes. Also, "Seed" has Macro cooking classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Macrobiotic desserts!
After reading through this book and looking at the pictures, I found the desserts to be simply astonishing. Eric has put much love into this book, staying true to the title.

Eric's desserts are balanced nicely with the included drinks, like recipes for grain coffee, kukicha (twig tea), and ryokucha (green tea).

The book is organized well and is easy to follow. The recipes range from simple to elaborate, with a lot of variety. The vegan and Macrobiotic world is fortunate to have this book in its library, as is the rest of the world of food.

This is the book to get if you're looking for amazing vegan macrobiotic desserts! Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Seems like the author did not tested the recipes
I completely with Jazzbrat, I tried 12 recipes from this book andmany of them had to be baked much much longer because of overabundance of liquid per dry ingredients. I am glad that you mentioned it.
Some of the recipes are great(macaroons, truffles, pain perdu), however some of the others were not tested by the author.

3-0 out of 5 stars I do not think anyone tested some of these recipes.
First, I would like to say that this book is visually beautiful. Every dessert in here looks absolutely mouthwatering.

Now the disappointing news- I do not think anyone tested some of these recipes. If you look at some of the baked goods, you will find an overabundance of liquid per dry ingredients.

I have tried 2 of the recipes, neither of which came out well. I first tried the Kabocha Pound Cake. The taste was great but the batter was thinner than pancake batter and took over twice as long to bake. (It is NOT my oven as I keep an oven thermometer in it.) Looking at the recipe even before I made the cake, I thought the dry to wet ratio was a bit odd. I don't think the recipes were tested OR edited.

Next I tried the azuki rolls. Again- wet to dry was suspect. I had to pour off some water from the cooked beans, although that is not a step in the process. Even with that, the dough was so loose, I could not roll it up. I have worked with delicate dough before, including philo, and have never had an issue before. The baked rolls were good but were so crumbly they fell apart. They were more like super delicate shortbread than an actual roll.

I am now very wary of trying other recipes in the book. I really want to try all of them. Someone here mentioned that they tried the biscotti and had no trouble. I will definitely make them as the recipe has some positive feedback.

If you have the book, and have made some of the recipes, please post your results. I would be very interested to know which ones work. In the meantime, if I attempt to make any of the other baked goods, I will update my post.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook!!!
This dessert book is, first of all, absolutely gorgeous!!the photographs are beautiful and the food styling is excellent - absolutely world class in every way!!

I, like some of the others reviewers, haven't actually made anything from the book yet but, i have had the desserts at m cafe and they are to die for!!!i love love love the strawberry shortcake and the cupcakes.

unfortunately, i live less than 2 blocks away from m cafe so it is way too convenient for me to have a dessert every day!!!not to mention that another veg place, busaba, has just recently opened across the street and they have to die for coconut sorbet.way too many dessert options in walking distance - but at least they are healthy desserts.

i met eric and his wife at a book signing recently at erewhon and was equally impressed with the man behind the talent.they were such nice people and told me that they self-published the cookbook themselves - simply unbelievably!!this cookbook is world-class in every way - presentation, writing clarity, and just sheer beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Total Food Fabulosity!
This book is a dream come true! I've never "read" a cookbook before, yet couldnt put this one down.. it exceeds all expectations...Even the most simple recipes such as steaming broccoli have a very special flare & all natural of course!
Bravo Melanie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I found this book to be very informative. If you are just starting out with this way of eating, or just want to incorporate some of it in your diet, this is the book to read.
It's very easy reading and Melanie explains everything. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning!
As far as I am concerned, this book was a "life-changer". My eating habits, before I read this book, were quite absurd. After I finished the book, I realized that I didn't have to sacrifice flavor or comfort in order to eat well. These recipes, and I am a busy professional, are quick and easy, make me feel as If I am really a cook (which I am definitely not) and I feel healthier and more energetic. As an added bonus, when I go on dates now, or when a date sleeps over, I am able to impress her with my ordering and my cooking.Unfortunately this is generally not enough to overcome their initial impressions.

Seriously, the book is fun AND funny, can be read in an hour or two, and in the kitchen it is easy to follow.Just prop it up and fire away.

In addition, the author give just enough information about Macrobiotics and its history in this country as well as the Yin and Yang of it all and an explanation of why it all matters.

Very helpfully, the books contains easy shopping lists, excellent suggestions for children's and teenager's diets (even an away at college menu guide) and a short, but readable, treatise on the nature of energy and how we use it.

This is a great book for couch potatoes OR triathletes.Don't mean to go on, but it's just that being one way and then being another is usually, at least in my mind, a good thing. And this book just happened to be a catalyst for change as far as I was concerned.

3-0 out of 5 stars Faux Macrobiotic
I've been macrobiotic for over 25 years, and this book belongs to a genus you might call faux macrobiotic.

Macrobiotics involves eating according to the energy, or chi, in foods--because it's the energy that sustains us, rather than the chemical constituents recognized by science. This typically means avoiding processed and refined foods (because they have no chi) and highly stimulating spices, which activate the organs in undesirable ways. However, most people are accustomed to eating exactly those foods as part of the standard American diet (SAD).

Although this book has "macrobiotic" in the subtitle and begins with a long section explaining macrobiotic principles, many of the recipes call for such ingredients as canned beans, frozen peas, fresh and canned fish (tuna), garlic, cumin, chili, cayenne, and pepper. With the possible occasional exception of fresh fish, you would never find these ingredients in a conventional macrobiotic diet.

The book is apparently geared toward younger people, college students, who are on the go and want a somewhat more healthful diet than the usual fast food. I suppose in that respect it's better than Peg Bracken's "I Hate to Cook Book," which was my introduction to the kitchen several decades ago and mostly involved opening cans. But many people who come to macrobiotics do so for health reasons, and if that's you, this book may not be as helpful as you expect. If you're in good health and don't overdo it with the ingredients I mentioned, you probably won't do yourself much harm, but don't delude yourself that you're following a macrobiotic diet.

The rationale for these books is that people are in a hurry, so using canned or frozen sometimes is okay, and that people want variety, so spices are okay. Occasionally, it *is* okay. But this book has many such recipes--they seem to be the rule rather than the exception. Authors of these books sometimes say that macrobiotics is evolving or that you don't want to be rigid, etc. Fine, but there's just no getting around the fact that if you have a serious health problem and hope to get rid of it (or want to minimize your chances of causing one in the future), a clean vegan diet is imperative. Also, part of macrobiotics involves uncorrupting our taste buds, so we can appreciate the taste of the food itself, without a lot of seasoning.

I bought this book sight unseen, thinking it had some new twists on the old macro ideas, and I find that it's basically a popularization. The title and long introductory section imply that it's a macrobiotic cookbook, and to some extent it is. But people often come to macrobiotics to get rid of health problems, and eating canned and frozen foods and fish and spices on a regular basis is not going to help you do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource For Delicious Macrobiotic Recipes
This book is a valuable contribution to Macrobiotics. It eases the beginner in leaning how to eat according to its dietary principles without the intimidation one might expect when beginning a new healthy way of eating. This is also a great book to carry in your handbag when cooking away from home.It was difficult to keep the book on our shelf because everyone who saw it wanted to borrow it.A friend told me that it was the first time she was able to remain on the diet due to the simple yet very flavorfulrecipes and clear explanations Melanie describes in the book. Many of our friends have purchased the book.I refer to it as the Contemporary Macrobiotic book because Melanie presents ideas in a way that others have yet to do.We also noticed that her presentation of the diet is not as rigid as most Macrobiotic books. Another wonderful aspect about the book is that the ingredients for the recipes were much easier to find than with other books on the subject. You may want to order two book because it has a tendency to want to be borrowed. We are extremely pleased with our purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential healthy cookbook
Although I've got a ton of cookbooks, this is one of the 5 I use over and over again. Great desserts (quick crusts using granola, apple juice and oil), lemon pies using pineapple juice and lemon juice and kuzu, and an outstanding collection of sauces for salads and vegetables that only require a handful of specialty items, such as tofu or miso, to make. For anyone who wants to cut down on refined grains and sugars and still get lots of compliments from the family and company.
