5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book for good health
a wonderful book, easy to follow and one can also adjust where it is needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steers clear of the escoteric...wonderfully easy to follow!
As a complete and utter novice to Macrobiotic dieting & lifestyle,I couldn't ask for a better definitive guide! This book avoids the lofty, philosophical language usually associated with natural & so-called "alternative" diets, and you don't have to drive a 1970 Volkswagon van to be in sync with its format! The staple foods are clearly explained (along with detailed definitions of the Asian foods, which may be fairly obscure to most Americans, me included).I became interested in this diet when Madonna brought it mainstream, but had reservations about my ability to manage it myself.... would I need a staff of professional celebrity-worthy chefs, like Madonna probably has, or could I follow its format on an every-day basis, including shopping & stocking the kitchen? With this book, the answer is "yes".I recommend it not only for a macrobiotic diet, but also for vegan dieters (as it excludes dairy & eggs, as well as meat).

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
Explains which foods can be eaten & how often as well as giving recipes

3-0 out of 5 stars too boring for me
This book is great if you don't like seasoning on your food and if you have a whole foods store by you, which I don't.There are a few things I'll take from the book but probably won't use it much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Primer for Beginning Macrobiotics
I just started this healthy way of feeding my mind, body and soul and this book has helped define how to cook just about everything in the macrobiotic diet. From Sea Veggies, Legumes, Whole Grains, Soups, Pickles, Condiments and Desserts, this book has it all. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A flexible macrobiotic cookbook covering a range of dishes
Macrobiotics is the logical extension of the current movement towards sustainable development - from the community and down to the level of the individual. In a word it represents a practical way to achieve individualsustainability in an increasingly dangerous world governed by degenerativediseases such as cancer, heart disease and the like many of which areinduced by negative aspects of the degraded environment in which many of uscurrently live.

The philosophy behind macrobiotics is clearly presentedand the argument for following the approach, already adopted by traditionalpopulations to ensure freedom from such diseases, is presented in acompelling manner. Macrobiotics owes its core foundation to the diatarypractices of traditional Japan but macro (great) biotic (life) diets can belinked to many traditional, grain-rich cuisines. The basic elements of theJapanese-based components of the diet are well described and illustrated incolor. The resulting account is sufficient to enable a novice to start thediet and an old-hand will find endless enjoyment in the suggesteddishes.

More to the point, the recipes are sophisticated andmouth-watering while at the same time complying with the essence of themacrobiotic philosopy which advises eating only whole foods (no refinedproducts) and maintaining around 40%-50% intake of whole (or FRESHLYbroken-down ie. flaked, kibbled etc.) grains.

The book represents anexcellent introduction to the practicalities of a macrobiotic diet and onlyimmediate tuition by a macrobiotic chef could improve on the presentation.

I recommend this book most highly to all those seeking to find their waytowards living health on the macrobiotic path-way.The Journey To Enlightenment ... Read more

Product Description
* Acclaimed stage and screen actor Keith Michell delivers a cookbook filled with the fabulous recipes that keep him healthy, active, and in the spotlight. * Includes over 200 recipes, many appearing for the first time, as well as seasonal menu suggestions. * Answers the questions that too often obscure macrobiotic practices.

In the latest edition of this unique cookbook, internationally acclaimed actor Keith Michell draws aside the curtain of mystery that too often obscures macrobiotics. With an inimitable and entertaining style, Michell shows that being practically macrobiotic doesn't have to mean a life of food denial and strict diets, but instead can provide a way to enjoy eating heathily from the vast variety of foods that nature supplies.

With the understanding of someone who has taken to heart a new way of life, Keith Michell explains just what macrobiotics is all about. He has painstakingly sought answers to the many questions commonly asked about the macrobiotic diet. Practically macrobiotic in both senses of the expression, Michell is able to offer us refreshing and appealing explanations of the principles behind this lifestyle and way of eating. With over 200 delicious recipes--many of them appearing here for the first time--and original color illustrations by the author himself, Keith Michell's Practically Macrobiotic Cookbook gives full creative expression to a man who is always a star, whether on stage or in the kitchen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book in itself
I recently read Alicia Silverstone's book, The Kind Diet, in which she follows a vegan/macrobiotic diet. Already being vegan a short time, I wanted to know more about the macrobiotic part and am very pleased I purchased this book. It really explains what macrobiotics is and explains how & why to develop a healthy diet along with a lot of good recipes.

I'd previously tried to stay away from all grains & ate just meats & vegetables, no fruit but I could not control my Diabetes type II. Keith Michell's Practically Macrobiotic Cookbook really works for me. I feel healthier with blood sugar levels pretty much under control. And, I already LOVED brown rice so it works great for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars I use this book constantly!
I have been off and on macrobiotic for years but sometimes just want more variety in my eating. This cookbook offers a bit more in the way of spices and jazzing up food than the traditional macro cookbooks I own. I appreciate the fact that he has a small section with a suggested list of seasonal daily menus so that I don't have to constantly come up with a balanced yin-yang meal on my own. The recipes are wonderful. There are recipes that I can barely read anymore, as I have made them so often and they are totally disfigured with blobs of tamari and other ingredients. If you like to eat simply and healthy with lots of variety, but still want to stick with the macrobiotic principles, this book is well worth getting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gigigirl2
Anything Keith Michell writes or does is fine with me.After all, who can argue with Henry VIII?Handsome, youthful and still going strong, he must be doing something right.Maybe his role as the progressively aging, fat and unattractive Henry put him on the course for staying trim and vigorous into his 70s.I can't wait to read it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars love sanae's book
I listened to an audio interview with Sanae Suzuki on Phyia Kushi's website.Sanae's healing story is very inspiring.I decided to order her cookbook after hearing her story.I have some experience with macrobiotics and am familar with Japanese foods. The macrobiotic philosophy makes sense (eat local, eat according to seasons).Sanae's book is very inspiring and well-written.I researched the book before I bought it and knew what recipes I wanted to try.It is worth the money.Through Amazon I ordered the book from loveericinc and received it within a couple days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food is Love!
There is love in food. This is SO MUCH MORE than a cookbook. This is the story of a courageous woman who shares her secrets for a long, healthy, beautiful life. And it's the story of the man who stood beside her in absolutely unconditional love, which gives me hope that it still can be found. They made the entire book together, photos, food and all. As a yoga teacher, I've always known we can heal ourselves, and Sanae shows us how to do that through food. Nearly every recipe here will blow you away with it's sexy deliciousness. Even teen boys and big meat-eaters have erupted in joy and come back for thirds. I've bought this book for so many of my friends, who run down the street to share what they cook with their friends, who share with others, who share with others. Every person in the world should read this book, and I'm telling you, I've read them all. This is THE ONE. Whatever keeps your heart heavy, you can find healing through this way of eating. I promise. You don't have to be perfect at vegan macrobiotic right away. Just try something. Start anywhere. Eric and Sanae also have an amazing restaurant in Venice, California, called "Seed" and if you email them questions, they actually respond. Food is love!

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
I have had the pleasure of taking several cooking classes from Sanae Suzuki, the author of this terrific book, and she has managed to capture her wonderful, giving spirit in these pages. Her story is inspirational, her enthusiasm infectious, and her recipes delicious and easy to pull off. There are beautiful photos throughout, and while the food photography is gorgeous, my favorite are those of Sanae and her beaming smile! You will enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love, Sanae is the best!
Love, Sanae is must-have book for everyone interested in macrobiotics whether they are a beginner or advanced practitioner. Sanae's personal story is inspiring, the recipes and information are everything you could want in a macrobiotic cookbook and the pictures are gorgeous. The book is clearly a labor of love. Thank you Sanae!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Zen Macrobiotics - Health Giving and Perspectives

HEALTH PERSPECTIVE

I have had severe brittle diabetes since I was six. I was running blood pressure of 160-170 over 110-120 when I read this book. When I began practicing his diet and teachings, my blood pressure dropped gradually to where it has been since 120-125 over 80 to 90. I have also, several times, used his cures for specific ailments.

From a HEALTH Perspective, I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND this book to everyone (no one lacks physical problems).

PERSPECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Synthesizing the history of Eastern perspectives, Ohsawa makes us see quite clearly through the use of statistics and life stories just how difficult it is to rationalize Western Capitalistic Culture and the effects of corporate medicine and dietary habits on Americans (few realize that over 95% of the diet propoganda in the US comes from the Meat and Dairy industry, and, as John Robbins shows through innumerable scientific studies in his The Food Revolution, almost everything that propoganda says is untrue and designed to get us to buy meat and dairy products).

From a PERSPECTIVES perspective, I HIGHLY recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars More dietary advice, less philosophy
Always be wary of anyone who discourses on a past history of a region that is for all intents and purposes "Mythical", you know, the good 'ole days when everyone was well fed, happy and lived to 105. This Reactionary thinking in combination with a healthy dose of Western Civilization bashing takes away from a potentially positive dietary concept.

I have always considered white rice to be the "Junk Food" of Pan Asian societies. When I first heard of Mr. Ohsawa's advocacy of Brown Rice I was interested to read this book. But for a person who claims to have an understanding of Infinite Universal Law, yet doesn't know why human's catch colds and birds and bugs don't(his explanation is not even worth repeating). This and other forgettable insights, led me to conclude that his understanding of a great many things is...by an ethnocentric mindset,a fair amount of philosophical hallucination, and just plain bad deductive reasoning. This endless editorializing completely overpowered the fundamental message of the book. This is disapointing, given Mr. Oshawa's reputation and the positive outcomes I've heard from people who have followed elements of his dietary concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am 38, the book saved my life twice.
Having a decadent and unhealthy lifestyle, one day a friend told me "the only chance for you to survive is to read and live by the book, 'Zen Macrobiotic' by George Ohsawa".I started to read, it was morelike listening to a old man of wisdom. That man had a great life storywhich he was giving me all of his discoveries to a meaningful life.Lifeis beautiful.

Herman Aihara is the leading authority on practical macrobiotics and natural living in the world today. More than fifty years ago he studied with George Ohsawa, the man who introduces macrobiotics to the West. Aihara, author of Acid and Alkaline and other books, has is educational background in Western science and has a unique ability to apply its analytical approach to the ancient philosophical wisdom of the Far East. This book explains macrobiotic diet and lifestyle from a nutritional perspective. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Approach
The book presents good diet guidelines. Anyone who follows these guidelines will probably be eating in a healthier manner than they were before. While I do not agree with everything, I agree with 90% and I have been examining diet recommendations for more than 25 years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Macrobiotics for those who don't want to follow a macrobiotic way of life
I purchased this book hoping that it would be a good update to traditional macrobiotic reference material and it wasn't.The author dismisses both miso and bancha tea as too salty and containing too much caffeine. The author makes limited mention of the yin / yang food philospohy and then dismisses many traditional macrobiotic foods such as daikon as too difficult to find in the stores. He also does not even mention cast iron cooking methods that I could find, and only in passing says you can use a pressure cooker but most people don't.

The author also continues on about supplements, and bioidenical hormones, which he provides a convenient resource link for purchasing, which have nothing to do with traditional macrobiotics, or zen, or any eastern philosophy of medicine.

In essence if you are looking for a book about macrobiotics, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a book about hormones and following a vegan diet this may be for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zen Macrobiotics for Americans
You are what you eat! Want to know the right foods for better health?Must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat different approach to diet
What makes this book unique from most other healthy diets?Like most of the others, it tells us to avoid meat, fat, sweets. In these general ways it agrees with everything the health experts are always telling us, except of course for Atkins, who is on a planet of his own.

The main difference here, for me, is that we are told to really fill up on the whole grains. It is supposed to be the number one ingredient for us.

What is a whole grain anyway? No, it is not the whole wheat bread in your grocery store. In fact, when you go to the local health food store and look for whole grain bread, you had better ask the store employees for help, because breads aren't necessarily labeled whole grain. Some are, some aren't.If it has white flour, it is not whole grain.

I found a bread based on brown rice, and to my surprise it was really tasty, when toasted. It was frozen in the health food refrigerator. It is hard, substantial, and good.

I was surprised to see that corn is mentioned in the whole grains section of this book.Shows what I know, right? So buy that corn on the cob.

Brown rice and whole grain pasta are also in the category.Get the book to see what other whole grains you should be making the number one ingredient of your daily diet, according to this book.

The book then discusses beans.Basically, get every kind of bean.Vegetables are good too.

One thing that this book tells you to avoid is Nightshade vegetables. That includes potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant.

The book advises you to have an occasional piece of fish if you want, but to choose the lean fish like sole, flounder, scallops, and to avoid the fatty fish like tuna (oh my god!).

It attacks milk in a big way, blaming milk for a lot of heart-related deaths. It also has charts correlating fat intake to prostate and breast cancer.

I'm prepared to change my eating habits based on this book, to incorporate more whole grains and beans.I eat pretty healthy already, but I have a problem or two I need to deal with.

I don't know if the author's claims that nightshade vegetables are bad for you, that it is not a good idea to drink a lot of water, and that Vitamin C is much less important than we think, are correct or not.Sometimes he really goes "against the grain".

If the author reads this, I have a special message for him.You need someone like me to edit your book. There are a lot of editing problems in it.I'm doing that already for another published author who didn't go with one of the big publishing houses.I can get rid of the mistakes in here.I'm not talking about mistakes in advice.I'm talking about use of the language(...)It helps your credibility to eliminate the errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise
In the past, whenever I heard that someone was following a "Macrobiotic" diet, I cringed. Thoughts of a limited, boring, and tasteless diet came to mind. Roger Mason brings East & West together in a well-written book that clearly demonstrates how to eat healthy with a variety of foods and flavors. He offers an easy to follow eating plan combined with recommended supplements and lifestyle suggestions. This concise book is a must read if you want to look and feel better! ... Read more

Product Description
The story of Mina Dobic and her family is a modern odyssey. Her journey to health and wholeness weaves together many of the transcendent themes of the last half-century; the struggle between communism and a free society, the conflict between conventional medicine and holistic health, and the centrifugal forces pulling apart the modern family and the unifying thread that holds it together.

Along the way, Mina passed from cancer victim to cancer survivor, from patient to healer, from student to teacher. Born and having lived in former Yugoslavia for over 40 years, today she is one of the leading macrobiotic cooks and counselors on the West Coast of the USA, inspiring many others with her wisdom, love and compassion.

Thanks to the Dobics and many other families around the world, macrobiotics is beginning to enter the mainstream and influence the course of modern society.

Despite notable strides by the medical research community introducing newly developed therapies and medications, every 15 seconds someone is diagnosed with heart disease or cancer. At the turn of the century cancer affected one out of twenty-seven people. By 1950, the rate had leaped to one in eight; and by 1985, official estimates were that one out of three people would develop the disease.

If cancer continues increasing at this rate, by the year 2000, every other person could ultimately develop it. By the year 2020, cancer could strike four out of five people and, soon thereafter, virtually everyone!

This book tells how to recover from cancer and, better yet, how to prevent it through diet and a simple lifestyle. It explains the philosophy of living in balance with nature. It reminds us how we humans, with our emphasis on fixing things and arrogance of improving on nature, have brought ourselves and other species to the verge of extinction.

This book is about something which is missing in this present world. It is about love, about the real purpose of life which is to nurture and celebrate ourselves, other creatures, the earth, and the Universe which gave us life. It gives us hope for humankind and for the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book
Mybeautiful life is a fabulous book. Very powerful, inspirational, and motivating. Mina Dobic is a very powerful healer and has has helped numerous people transition to a macrobiotic lifestyle.

1-0 out of 5 stars all lies, in my opinion
Promoting a diet of organic produce, little refined sugar and whole grains is wonderful; suggesting that such a diet is a CURE for cancer is quack medicine, irresponsible and immoral. Dobic eradicates all developments in science since the Enlightenment and wants readers (many of whom must be desperate cancer patients) to believe that miso soup can destroy a tumor. This isn't 'natural medicine'; this is Orientalism: exoticizing the east to make money in the west. This book is so badly written, one wonders whether the PhD she touts (and touts and touts) is real; the text is mostly unintelligible and occasionally laughable. After reading every page of this book, hoping to learn more about the macrobiotic diet (about which there is MUCH to admire), I understand that the author is neither a scholar nor a healer nor a writer-- just a hotel cook who got very lucky. There are many, many, many better books on cancer, healthy cooking and inspirational/spiritual philosophies. This may be the worst I've ever encountered, if not the worst book I've ever spent real hours of my life reading. How many lives, how many families, has this woman already destroyed with her quackery?

1-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous, unverifiable claims
None of these methods are scientifically proven or even tested. All we have to go on are the dubious testimonies of people claiming that they cured stage 4 cancer with some seaweed.
I urge anyone who is in a dire health situation to reconsider the advice of charlatans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing...
Mina Dobic's book, My Beautiful Life, inspired me to visit the Kushi Institue in Becket, Massachusetts, and pursue an IMA degree in Complementary Health Education at Antioch McGregor University in Yellow Springs, Ohio. A high school Human Anatomy and Physiology teacher and currently director of a charter conversion school in Ohio, I believe this book has changed not only my life...but lives of hundreds of my students, friends, and professional peers.
I first read a brief description of the book in a catalog. Intrigued, I ordered it and could not stop reading...underlining..highlighting! Knowing full well that the homeostatis of the body is dependent on the health of each and every cell, Mrs. Dobic's description of her cancer, her fight, her flight to Brookline, Massachusets to consult with Michio Kushi, and her eventual victory over disease made excellent sense. I was overwhelmed with the hope...and the power one must claim to take control of their own health.
I am currently teaching a macrobioitc class and have suggested to all of my students that they must read this inspiring, hope-filled story of a brave, strong Yugoslavian woman who did more than beat the odds...she created an entirely new lifestyle for herself and her family. I would be honored to someday meet Mrs. Dobic...and sample one of her macro pies!
Her inspiring story has caused many of my students to take a long, hard look at what they are feeding their cells...and believe me,they are often just plain shocked! Healthy, wholesome eating is a choice...select whole, organic grains, vegetables, temperate fruits (if you live in Ohio), and drink your organic tea! Slow your life down...sing a song daily...walk barefoot in the grass...stop chasing the dream...and begin living it.Read My Beautiful Life and you will feel empowered to do so!Marcia Balmut Ward, Director - Graham Digital Academy, Graham Local Schools, St. Paris, Ohio

5-0 out of 5 stars Aligning With the Healing Powers of the Universe
"Cancer."This dread diagnosis is now heard by one out of two men and one out of three women. In telling the story of her illness and subsequent recovery, Mina Dobic openly talks about the kind of problems weall face these days - emotional family conflicts, environmental pollution, stressful work life, and thoughtless eating habits. All these present ourbodies with conditions they can't handle.

For Mina, these pressuresaccumulated to the point that in 1987 she was diagnosed with fourth stage(terminal) ovarian cancer metastasized throughout her body. But thiscourageous woman was not about to surrender her life to outside influences.

Her spirit rebelled against doctors judging she had"two monthsto live".How could anyone else know the strength of her heart?Ofher soul? How could they know the depth of her passion for life and desireto care for her family?

With the help of a doctor friend knowledgeableabout the importance of a balanced and nourishing diet, Mina took mattersinto her own hands.Undergirded by the loving support of family andfriends, she faithfully followed the instructions of Michio Kushi, aleading macrobiotic healer. In six months she was pronouncedcancer-free!

I liked this book because it testifies to the miraculoushealing powers of our human bodies and the Universe which created us.Herstory assures us that cancer need not be a sentence of premature death.Ifound very helpful the details of her daily routine and recipes thatrestored her health.Reading it can help prevent cancer. It is abeautiful gift for anyone struggling to overcome this life-threateningdisease. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the touchstone for macrobiotic cooking
This is the third copy of the book that I have bought.I lend it to people and never get it back.

It has ALL the details of macrobiotic cooking and lots of mix and match recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great start
This book while containing some theory, does not contain exclusively theory (which many books I've read on macrobiotics does). Instead she concentrates on application. There's lots of recipes, with much variety. She organizes the sections well, even giving a menu section, and a section dedicated to reusing leftovers! This is the book to get when you actually want to start cooking macrobiotic, but don't really know where to begin (even after reading much about it).

5-0 out of 5 stars A cookbook that inspires your own creativity
This book does NOT list recipes for specific dishes. Instead, it lists cooking procedures. So you need ideas for a pie filling? Turn to "Pie Fillings" and look at Ferre's basic procedure and examples. You think you want to pickle all those cukes your garden yielded? Turn to "Pickles" and see all the options--brine pickles, pressed pickles, salt pickles....This book tells you how to do what you want to do and gives you tasty examples. All you have to do is take it from there. It's a great reference for any whole foods cook, not only for people interested in macrobiotics.

I am about to purchase my third copy of this book, I use it so often.

My wish list for the next edition, if there is one: looseleaf binding; "Notes" pages in each section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for busy people
Perfect ideas for maintianing macrobiotics if you have little energy (eg you are ill) or you are very busy & cannot do a gourmet meal every night as Aveline Kushi has on the menus in her glossaries!!! If you know any other good books like this ... Thanks

4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to read and most enjoyably to the point.
If you want to learn what Macrobiotic cooking is all about...this is the book! Very easy to read. Takes you step-by-step on "HOW" to cook and "HOW" to prepare food with a pressure cooker and theimportance of such a utensil. Wonderful recipes. Very basic, very good.Perfect introduction to the lifestyle! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Macrobiotic Brown Rice Cookbook
This little book has a lot of charisma. It is useful and attractive.I have ordered it for several friends. There is just enough information about macrobiotics to be inspiring, yet by no means too much, so as not to overwhelm a person not bent on studying the subject.Even a friend with wide knowledge of cooking told me she learned a few things from the book, yet the style is down to earth. The recipes are simple and easy to use, written in a style that is exact but not intimidating at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love their recipes!
This book is great! The miso soup recipe is wonderful, and I'm hooked on the Risi i Bisi!!! It was recommended to me by a friend who modified her diet after being diagnosed with cancer. Being vegetarian, I explored it myself and now it's a staple in my kitchen. Recipes are relatively easy and very tasty.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I'm a vegetarian, not macrobiotic, so perhaps the other person's criticism was valid, but I love this book. There are some very simple but delicious dishes in this book. This is the one I turn to when I don't want to cook something too complicated, but I want somthing healthy and delicious. The soup recipes are some of my favorites from any book, especially the one with corn (add shredded carrot for color, yum). And I also like the writing, not just the recipes.

(The resaon I am looking at the book here at all is because I want to get a copy for a friend of mine as a present.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Macrobiotic enough
If your a vegetarain this book is good, But as far as macrobiotic?..........no way!!! Recipes nearly all contain GARLIC, & other ingredients such as coconut milk........I was pushed hard to find a macrobiotic recipe that was not too YIN...... I actually had an old edition of this book. Back then, the recipes were filled with spices too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brown Rice Simplified
This book is simple to read and understand. The recipies are easy to follow. This is a great little book to have handy in your kitchen. The foundation of a macrobiotic diet is well cooked brown rice. This book will give you ideas, and will help to bring your brown rice cooking to perfection. ...
