3-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Little Book
A Guide to Parrots and Macaws is a handy little book to have with the beautiful pictures and short descriptions of several parrot species in the back one third of the book.

In the chapter "Choosing Parrots and Macaws", David Alderton give brief information on various thoughts and differences in choosing pet birds or breeding birds.

In the chapter "Keeping Parrots and Macaws in the Home, he gives some very good information about cages and cage placement.Unfortunately he then goes on to give an outdated method of wing clipping.

The chapter "Keeping Parrots and Macaws in the Garden, gives wonderful details on building outdoor aviaries for all sizes of parrot species.

The "Feeding Parrots and Macaws" chapter has some good information, but is outdated in some parts.Although he does give the basic seed/pellet/fruits/vegetables diet, he indicates the need for grit for digestion.

The "Basic Health Care" chapter lists several disease possibilities and stresses the fact that you must take your bird to veterinarian.I would stress that it must be an avian veterinarian or at the least a veterinarian who regularly treats birds.

The chapter Breeding and Rearing Parrots and Macaws explains methods of sexing birds that are not sexually dimorphic since knowing the sex of your birds is certainly the first step in breeding them. He gives details on the various nestboxes for the various sizes and species of parrots.

This book was published in 1989 and as with many books that are a little older, some of the information is outdated. We have learned a lot about bird care over the last few years that was not known in 1989.

If you can find this book at a reasonable price - taking into consideration that it is quite a small book (95 pages) - I would suggest getting it.The 90 colour photographs and illustrations are wonderful.

Excerpt: The Titicaca Grebe or Titicaca Flightless Grebe (Rollandia microptera) is a grebe found on the altiplano of Peru and Bolivia. As its name implies, its main population occurs on Lake Titicaca. Lake Uru Uru and Poopó, the Rio Desaguadero, and small lakes that connect to Lake Titicaca in wet years, serve as "spillovers" territory. In the past, the population was larger and several of these lakes such as Lakes Umayo and Arapa apparently had and may still have permanent large colonies (BirdLife International 2006). It is sometimes placed in Podiceps or a monotypic genus Centropelma. Its local name is zampullín de Titicaca. This is a mid-sized grebe, varying from 28-45 cm in overall length. It weighs up to 600 g. Its coloration is unmistakable. The only grebe species it somewhat resembles is the unrelated Red-necked Grebe which is not found in South America. The only congener, the White-tufted Grebe, does not look very similar. The color pattern of the Titicaca Grebe is altogether similar to that of the Red-necked Grebe, but it has a darker belly, and a white (not light grey) throat patch that runs down the neck nearly to the breast. Due to the short wings, the rufous flanks can usually be seen. The ornamental plumes on the head are a vestigial version of those of the White-tufted Grebe, but dark. Iris and the lower bill are yellow. Juveniles and non-breeding adults are duller, lack the ornamental plumes, and in the case of the former have rufous stripes on the sides of the head and more white on the neck, so that the rufous breast does not show in swimming birds. It is entirely flightless,...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4204269 ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Saint Croix Macaw (Ara autocthones) is an extinct species of bird in the parrot family which is only known from sub-fossil bones found at two archeological sites on Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands and central Puerto Rico. This medium sized species is one of two confirmed and named macaw species in the Caribbean, the other being the smaller Cuban Macaw (Ara tricolor). The species was originally described by Wetmore from a sub-fossil left tibiotarsus of an immature bird found in the kitchen middens (dump for domestic waste) at Concordia, near Southwest Cape. ... From the author: The Military Macaw (Ara militaris) is an endangered species with a fragmented distribution and declining populations. Their diet has not been described in detail but the species is considered to be a specialized granivore, and individuals may make seasonal movements in search of food resources. This study examined the diet of Military Macaws in tropical dry and oak (Quercus spp.) forests of Cuicatlan, Mexico. We followed macaws to identify diet composition, and quantified the nutritional content of all items which they consumed. Military Macaws used 10 plant species during the year having a standardized Levins niche breath index of B = 0.18. Their diet consisted principally of seeds but also included fruits, leaves, and latex. Foods rich in protein and lipids composed the diet of macaws, especially during the breeding season. Macaws preferred some plant species using them more than predicted by their abundances. Food resources must be considered when managing and preserving habitat to protect this endangered species.

Product Description
I have thought of how best to introduce my Granddaughter to the history of Guyana and I hope I came up with a fun way that all children will enjoy.

I attempted to tell a brief history of Guyana through the eyes of a Macaw who is the one of the longest living birds of the Amazon and Guyana rainforest. I have deemed this story as fiction because I worried about the accuracy of some of the written material to avoid challenges.

Macaw tells how many changes his Grandparents and Great Grandparent have seen over the years and pass it all down to him as bed time stories.

Mr. Macaw tells the history in 16 chapters, which I thought would be enough to read one chapter at a time to my little one.I want her to enjoy what she hears and learn to love her grand parents heritage and culture. I wanted to stimulate the curiosity in her to want to visit Guyana and learn from what she heard in her childhood and to enjoy her visit there because she knows the history.

Excerpt: The Blue-headed Macaw or Coulon's Macaw (Primolius couloni) is native to eastern Peru (except in north), north-western Bolivia (mainly in Pando), and far western Brazil (only in Acre). It has a total length of about 41 cm (16 in), making it a member of the group of smaller macaws sometimes known as the Mini-Macaws, which includes any species of macaw with a total length of 50 cm (20 in) or less. As in all macaws, its tail is long and pointed and the bill is large and heavy. The Blue-headed Macaw is 41 cm (16 in) long. It has mainly green plumage (often tinged olive, esp. below) with the head, flight feathers and primary coverts blue. The uppertail has a maroon base, a narrow green center and a blue tip. The undertail and underwing are greenish-yellow similar to that of several other small macaws (e.g. Red-bellied and Golden-collared Macaw). The bill is pale greyish-horn with a black base (extent varies, but upper mandible in adults typically appears mainly pale). The iris is whitish with a narrow, often barely visible, maroon eye-ring. Unlike most other macaws, the facial skin and lores are dark greyish. The legs are dull pinkish. Juveniles resemble adults, but with the entire bill black, greyer legs, darker iris and the facial skin and lores white. In recent years it has often been placed in the genus Propyrrhura, but this is incorrect as per ICZN rules. Earlier, it has also been placed in the genus Ara, which at present only is used for some of the larger macaws. It is found in the south-west Amazon and adjacent east Andean foothills. It prefers openings in humid forest, e.g. along rivers or clearings, but has also b...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10251280 ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Red-and-green Macaw (Ara chloropterus), also known as the Green-winged Macaw, is a large mostly-red macaw of the Ara genus. This is the largest of the Ara genus, widespread in the forests and woodlands of northern and central South America. However, in common with other macaws, in recent years there has been a marked decline in its numbers due to habitat loss and illegal capture for the parrot trade. The Red-and-green Macaw can be readily identified from the Scarlet Macaw as whilst the breast of both birds is bright red, the upper-wing covert feathers of the Red-and-green Macaw are green (as opposed to yellow, or yellow and green in the Scarlet Macaw). In addition, the Red-and-green Macaw has characteristic red lines around the eyes formed by rows of tiny feathers on the otherwise bare white skin patch; this is one of the biggest differences from a Scarlet Macaw to the casual viewer. Iridescent teal feathers are surrounded by red on the tail. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Red-shouldered Macaw (Diopsittaca nobilis) is the smallest macaw being 30-35 centimetres (12-14 inches) in length. It is a parrot native to the tropical lowlands, savannah, and swamplands of Venezuela, the Guianas, Bolivia, Brazil, and far south-eastern Peru. It has two distinct subspecies, the Noble Macaw and the Hahn's Macaw, and a possible poorly distinct third subspecies that has longer wings, but is otherwise similar to the Noble Macaw.
