Extractions: Ancient History Page Year 11 Year 12 Year 11 This year, the two year 11 Ancient History classes started with the introductory topic 'Archaeological evidence'. In this topic they learnt about what Archaeology is and what an archaeologist does. They also learnt about Heritage issues and how things are dated. Here are a few of the comments from students about this topic: "It was interesting. It wasn't what I expected to learn in Ancient." "It was cool!" ANTHROPOLOGIST: A person who studies people in their physical, social, material and cultural development, including the study of their origins and evolution. In Term two the keen historians began to learn about 'Minoan Society' - in particular Thera. In this topic, the students looked at such factors as religion, way of life, housing and trade. As part of the topic, students had to complete a research assignment. Thera is located on the island now called Santorii. The main site on Thera is 'Akritri'. The word 'Minoans' comes from the legend of King Minos. The Minoans worshipped bulls.
The Women Of Athens
The ancient Greek Cultures exhibit includes information on the minoans, Myceneans and Greek cultures such as the Dorians, Ionians, Aeolians and Phoenicians. Also included are the full length texts of the Illiad and the Odyssey by Homer.

Extractions: Compared to the women of Sparta, the status of an Athenian woman in Greek society was minimal. By comparison to present day standards, Athenian women were only a small step above slaves by the 5th century BC. From birth a girl was not expected to learn how to read or write, nor was she expected to earn an education. On reading and writing, Menander wrote, " Teaching a woman to read and write? What a terrible thing to do! Like feeding a vile snake on more poison. " Other authors and philosophers had similar quips about women. Most of what has been written about Athenian women comes from the 7th century BC onward, when education in Athens began to emerge. Prior to that date, it has been alluded to by some authors, that the status of women was not so glum. In particular, the rights of women in Athens and their decline may have been the direct result of political pressures brought about by Pericle's ruling on the legitimacy of marriage . Similarly there is evidence to suggest that Athenian women prior to the 7th century BC had been subject to similar rites of passage as boys. The scholar Jean-Pierre Vernant, wrote that the Arrephoroi, and many other religious celebrations of Athens, could have been reduced from perhaps an entire age grade's participation, to only a handful of girls who were chosen to participate. Extractions: One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant advance of European civilization - the development of the first city-states - took place not on the fertile open central European plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative energy in warefare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete. The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and thecivilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.
