Extractions: Cindy Halstenson The activities of the summer fade as we move towards changing gears to begin the fall business of the Minnesota Dietetic Association. Transferring our focus from sun and fun to the professional needs of our membership is a time for us to confirm our direction for the organization. During the past year, we had the opportunity to experience the exciting progress in the provision of excellent educational programs. The Spring Annual Meeting boasted one of the largest turnouts ever. out of the active membership of 1500, more than 400 members attended. In addition to this, traveling workshops on outcomes, reimbursement, and computer echnology for beginners reached nearly 200 MDA members. Committees were also hard at work. The Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Act as at the forefront of many of our meetings and discussions. Action by the LNC and Public Policy team has continued through the summer. Reform legislation has the co-sponsorship of six to ten members of Minnesota's Congressional delegation. The team has worked diligently to promote passage of the MNT Act. MDA plans to focus attention on the following keys areas: securing support for MNT; technology, including improved communication through our website and listserv; and membership growth, especially attracting student members and strengthening district membership. I encourage each of you to evaluate your activities and involvement with MDA and join the fun of the committee of your choice. Look through the MDA website to find the information you need to contact officers and committee chairs in your area that can help you find ways to volunteer. Extractions: The Adolescent Health Training Program (AHTP) at the University of Minnesota is one of seven interdisciplinary programs in the US dedicated to preparing health professionals for leadership roles in adolescent health. The Adolescent Health Training Program is also one of only three World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centres in Adolescent Health. The research, service, and training mission of the AHTP is grounded in a conceptual framework of resiliency, designed to identify and enhance the competency of young people. As such training focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration, multi-culturalism, and an orientation to the health of populations, as well as individuals. The goal of training is to prepare the next generation of professionals who will assume leadership positions in both academic and public health sectors working with and on behalf of young people. Fellows are accepted at the graduate (MS, MPH, PhD) and postgraduate level in nursing, nutrition, psychology, and social work; and post-residency level in medicine. The program is a 12-month full-time commitment; however, some may select alternative plans for fellowship completion. Physicians with backgrounds in internal medicine and family practice complete a two-year fellowship, while pediatricians complete three years to qualify for subspecialty boards. Fellowships for postdoctoral psychologists are of variable lengths, from one to two years.
