    Extractions: There are very few good reasons to own a television without a VCR, but one of those reasons is Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," which is, in my opinion, one of the only shows on television with intelligent or witty writers. Fellow fans of the show will remember Stewart's interview with Natalie Portman a few days back when Stewart sarcastically remarked that he attended DeVry - as in the trade school that advertises in the middle of the day next to personal injury lawyers. At the time, I found Stewart's comment pretty funny, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that it demonstrates a destructive bias that has led to some serious problems in higher education. College is no longer an option, if one hopes to have a good shot at making a decent living - or so people think. As this notion spreads through the collective consciousness of America, enrollment in community colleges and unselective colleges and universities increases. As snobby as it may sound, society has built a network of unremarkable institutions to satisfy the needs of a population that is convinced higher education is the only way to a well-paying career. There is little doubt in my mind that the vast majority of students enrolled in the nation's colleges and universities are there for two reasons - getting inebriated and better career opportunities in the future. The notion that education should be sought for its own sake is fading.

This forces post-secondary schools and employers to teach these individuals basic skills. This study calculates the financial costs incurred by Michigan business and institutions of higher learning when students leave high school without learning basic skills. Using five different strategies for determining this cost, we conservatively estimate that the Michigan economy suffers a total annual loss of between $311 million and $1.15 billion. The best estimate, the answer from averaging the results from all five calculation strategies, is $601 million per year. Extrapolating to the entire United States, the lack of basic skills costs a total of approximately $16.6 billion each year. In addition to these monetary costs, the human costs are incalculable. Until more long-range solutions can have an impact, there seems to be no way to avoid spending more on remedial (or as it is now called, developmental) education in post-secondary schools. And while this study does not investigate the full range of possible policy responses to the situation, a number of options do seem fairly obvious.
