Extractions: Branching Out Online An Internet Genealogy Primer Please read the instructions before requesting help! Recently, a volunteer on this list sent me the following note. Please read it and consider it carefully. Volunteers are precious resources that the genealogy community can not afford to abuse. I am no longer able to do lookups due to the volume of emails I receive for help not related to my resource. I have people emailing me to get them birth certificates, to offer general genealogy advice, to do tombstone rubbings () - all sorts of stuff thathas nothing to do with my resource. It is out of hand and I can't sit here going through my email weeding out this garbage every day. I have had it. I am very sorry, and I know I have helped several people and I am glad of it - but there are too many people out there who are emailing me inappropriately. Please remove my address from your site. I am not located in Michigan and have no resources myself. If something is not on the list, then I don't have access to it. Please read the list carefully. Extractions: This new (Sept 2000) resource is a combination of The Michigan 1870 Census Index published by the Library of Michigan and electronic images of the 1870 census documents. Users can search for names and then view the actual images. The database of 450,000 names has been cross referenced to 36,000 image files. The image files are stored in PDF format and can be enlarged for easier viewing (do be aware that they can be quite large). Contact me In America. Two Bustraan cousins (fourth cousins, once removed, to be precise) emigrated from the Netherlands to America in the late 19th century. Cornelis Bustraan (b. 1849) emigrated from the small South Beveland village of Wemeldinge in the province of Zeeland in 1891 and brought his family to Michigan. A year later Adriaan Bustraan (b. 1857) emigrated from Wemeldinge and settled just outside of New York City in northern New Jersey.

Extractions: OAK GROVE HOSPITAL. One of the leading sanitariums in America is located in Flint. It is recognized by the most eminent men of the medical profession as a hospital, conducted along special lines, which has no superior in the entire community. The buildings and grounds are unsurpassed. Oak Grove Hospital, formerly Oak Grove Sanitarium, was organized under the laws of Michigan as Oak Grove Corporation in 1891, its object being the founding and administration of a thoroughly modern hospital for the treatment of nervous and mental diseases and of alcohol and drug addiction. Associated in the incipiency of the movement were James A. Remick and W. G. Vinton, of Detroit; Charles T. Mitchell, of Hillsdale, Michigan; and Dr. George C. Palmer, then superintendent of the Michigan asylum for the insane, at Kalamazoo. The sixty-five-acre grove of native oaks located near the eastern outskirts of Flint was selected for a site. This grove is now probably the last remaining oak clearing in Michigan. It has been preserved by Governor Henry h. Crapo, his intention being to build therein a mansion. The practical founder of the hospital was James A. Remick, of Detroit, who had served as a member of the board of trustees of the eastern Michigan asylum at Pontiac. The original buildings were erected by the Vinton Company, of Detroit, whose president, W. G. Vinton, was also president of the board of trustees of the eastern Michigan asylum. Mr. Vinton succeeded Justice H. B. Brown as president of Oak Grove Corporation, and was himself succeeded by George B. Remick, of Detroit. Mr. Remick died in 1913, and was succeeded by Dr. W. H. Sawyer, of Hillsdale, a regent of the University of Michigan. The original stockholders included James A. Remick, W. G. Vinton, G. J. Vinton, George B. Remick, and Thomas Pitts, of Detroit; C. T. Mitchell, of Hillsdale; William L. Smith and William Hamilton, of Flint.

So I called my grandparents and asked them about their families. I wrote up my report, then promptly forgot about it. Years later, my paternal grandparents died, and I started wondering about their history. I know, I know, great timing. So I dug out my report from 9 th grade, downloaded a very simple GED-type program for my computer, and decided that genealogy would be one of my hobbies. At first, I had a great time organizing all the information that I was able to glean from living relatives. But when that was done, I didn't have a clue about where to start researching. So I quit again. Then for Christmas in 1998, my dad bought me a copy of Family Tree Maker . He had just received a box of his late father's papers, and wanted me to help him sort through the papers and photos. And this time, I have the Internet to help me! I've posted some of my information to the WorldConnect project at Rootsweb . I've also posted some of it to GenCircles
