I had spent the day packing up camp, and a good soak in my neighbor's tub had somewhat revived me, when I returned to ES and discovered a mysterious object slipped into the pages of my journal. I unwrapped the vaguely familiar scarf and discovered a family cluster of slender spired quartz crystals nestled there. Memories flooded in, the dam broke, and I sobbed out the collected tears of the past week, unshed in the company of my girls. I cried for now and for then- how many years ago? when I left that crystal and scarf sitting on the mantle of my friend Fen's house soon after her husband's tragic and sudden death. And now she has returned the favor. I missed her visit, hot in my tub, but the crystal cluster speaks more eloquently than words. The next morning I carry the tiniest pebble I can find little more than a speck of gravel- to the cross on the hill in honor of the shortest day of the year. I leave it there with prayers for a safe journey and safe return, and shortly thereafter Xuxa and I are on our way, with a stop at Maestro Tomas', my mecanico, where he siphons off the extra half quart of oil he mistakenly put in at the oil change. I noticed that the oil pressure gage was reading unnaturally high. Steve would be proud of me, I think! I get a warm hit off Tomas, who talks me into taking the cuota via Guadalajara to Ajijic, and he sends me off with the usual comforting but very genuine "Que le vaya bien. "I can tell he means it.

Extractions: Abbreviation: NM New Mexico was the Spanish name for the territory north and west of the Rio Grande. New Mexico was admitted to the Union as the 47th state in 1912. New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment because of its scenic beauty and rich history. In 1540, the Spanish conquistador Coronado trekked through the area known today as New Mexico in search of the fabled seven cities of gold. The state has a large Hispanic population, as New Mexico was under Spanish control from the 16th century until about 1846. The influence of the Apache Indians who live there is evident in the artwork and culture. The Pueblo Indian presence is also very apparent, most visibly in the tribe's buildings. Part of the "Old West", New Mexico was a place known for cowboys and cattle drives. The landscape ranges from rose-colored deserts to snow-capped mountains. Lovers of history can visit Indian ruins, frontier forts and Spanish missions. Indian ceremonies, Spanish fiestas and local rodeos are among the most interesting events for tourists.

To help people made intelligent decisions about places, Geography has sharpened its traditional stature among core disciplines through the development of modern spatial analytical techniques. geography is both a physical and a social science because geographers cannot study societies and their technologies without also studying the environments in which they exist. As a result, the Geography department's programs are focusing on environmental analysis (physical geography and human environment interaction) and geographic information technologies (geographic information systems, remote sensing, and spatial statistics). The Department of Geography offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Science degrees. Undergraduate students may also elect to minor in Geography.

Extractions: The following is a story concerning an ancient lake that covered a large area of the State of Jalisco and spread into Michoacan and Aguascalientes. This map is a visual portrayal of the lake superimposed on a regional map. The south central portion of the State of Jalisco presents a panorama of lakes arranged in the form of a right angle, with one leg oriented east-west and the other north-south. Starting with the largest lake in the east they are: Chapala, Cajititlan and El Molino: then turning abruptly south are Atotonilco, Zacoalco, San Marcos, Atoyac, Sayula and Zapotlan. All of these lakes range from shallow to dry. For instance, Chapala has a mean depth of twenty-nine feet, whereas other lakes, such as San Marcos, are covered by water only during the wet season of the year. Having studied a similar series of lake basins in eastern California, I came to the conclusion that probably at one time all of these lakes were connected by drowning of the low divides separating them, forming one huge lake. If such a lake did occur in the geological past there must be evidence to prove its existence.

The Alliance works collaboratively with other organizations and agencies that share the commitment to improving geography education in the schools. Alliance Summer Geography Institute (ASGI) A ten-day or two-week institute enrolls a minimum of 20 teachers, who may receive course credit. What's New David Hawkins and ten students from his "Volcanoes" and Petrology courses capped off the spring 2001 semester with a field trip to volcanic fields in New Mexico. The group flew from Columbus to Albuquerque, traveled in a rental van and camped in National Park and Bureau of Land Management campsites. The first portion of the trip focussed on felsic volcanic rocks and related features of the Valles and Toledo calderas in the Jemez Mountains west of Sante Fe. The second portion of the trip focussed on mafic lava flows, vents and related features in the Zuni-Bandera and Mt Taylor volcanic fields, west of Albuquerque. This trip was supported by funds from an endowed gift to the Department by Frederick T. Holden. The student participants.
