The entire University system includes about 2,600 faculty members and 9,000 graduate students. The College Park campus, where the Department of Meteorology is located, is the system's flagship institution and is undergoing a period of sustained growth. The 1995 report of the National Research Council indicated that the University of Maryland, College Park is in the top 10 in Oceanography, and the 2002 US News World Report shows it as only one of 11 public and private universities being in the top 20 nationwide in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics. Programs of Study The Department of Meteorology, part of the Earth Sciences Program that includes the collocated Earth System Sciences Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC), offers graduate degrees in atmospheric and oceanic sciences, and climate and earth sciences. Our curriculum allows each student a choice of one of three areas of concentration (Dynamics of the Atmosphere and Oceans, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, and Climate and Earth Sciences), with 6 core courses and about 20 elective courses. Most students devote their first year to the core courses, covering the three areas, and take a comprehensive exam during the second year. The Master degree program generally takes two years to complete, and the Ph. D program about 4 to 5 years. The Department is particularly strong in Atmosphereic Chemistry and Air Pollution, Mesoscale to Global Numerical Weather Prediction, Data Assimilation, Earth Sciences and Climate, Physical Oceanography, Remote Sensing, and Dynamics with Predictability. These strengths are reinforced by strong collaborations leading to joint research topics with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Maryland Departments of the Environment and of National Resources, the NAtiona Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) of the National Weather Service, the NOAA Satellite (NESDIS) and Air Research Laboratories, all of which are located near the campus. Interdisciplinary programs with the Departments of Geology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Sciences, Geography, the Marine-Estuarine Environmental Science, and Hydrology (within the School of Engineering) are also encouraged. The Department has two members of the National Academy of Engineering and a member of the Academia Europaea.

Extractions: In 1959, scientists in the Arctic Meteorology Research Group at McGill University, joined forces with scientists in the Radar Meteorology Group of the Physics Department to form the Department of Meteorology. The AMRG continued to host the Stanstead Seminar with support from the U.S. Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories until 1969. At this time, the Stanstead Seminar was hosted by McGill's Department of Meteorology with financial support from the Meteorological Service of Canada as well as the McGill Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (and, in some years, the Natural Science and Engineering Recearch Council (NSERC)). In 1982, scientists from the Atmospheric Analysis and Prediction Division of NCAR helped organize the Seminar. In 1993, the Stanstead Seminar was hosted by the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, as the Department of Meteorology came to be known in 1992. The purpose of the Stanstead Seminar is still to act more as an informal workshop than as a conventional conference. Bishop's University is an ideal place to gather, socialize, exchange ideas and do science in an informal setting. For this reason, registration is open but limited, and attempts have been made to provide ample time for the discussion of the presentations as well as for the presentations themselves. Opportunities for marine science majors at NC State The Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at NCSU offers BS degrees in Marine Sciences with emphases in Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Meteorology. Our goal is to train scientists with a solid grounding in their discipline of emphasis, but whose broad exposure to the other Marine Science disciplines allows them to recognize and integrate the effects of complex interactions between sea, solid earth and atmosphere. By incorporating a few additional courses into a carefully-planned program, our students can earn two B.S. degreesone in Marine Science and another in Physics, Chemistry, Meteorology or Geology. Most important are the 30+ MEAS faculty, dedicated to the training of students, discovery of new knowledge, and service to the public. We occupy a modern teaching and research building, and are partners in coastal facility, CMAST . Our libraries (with Natural Resources shelved in our building) offer world-class on-line services. MALSAT webpage. Project web site. Meningococcal meningitis is a major disease of sub Saharan Africa with the classic meningitis belt covering much of West Africa. Meningitis is a disease of the latter part of the dry season and ceases with the onset of the rains. The disease is epidemic in nature and is a big killer of people who have not acquired any immunity. Much of the initial effort of this project has gone into assembling a clinical database of clinically confirmed cases of the disease. This database where possible exists down to a district level for countries in West Africa. The best data sets have been found so far in Niger, Mali and Togo. It is suggested in the literature that the disease is triggered (there are high carriage rate in any population) once the absolute humidity drops below 10gm

Extractions: The undergraduate program in meteorology and oceanography at San Francisco State University (SFSU) is administered by the Department of Geosciences. The BS in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences is unique among atmospheric and oceanic science degrees across the country in that students in both concentrations take a common 25-unit core of coursework designed to investigate the interactions between the atmosphere and oceans. The degree has six emphases within the two concentrations with specific course groupings for students interested in either meteorology or oceanography. The emphases include several developing areas of employment (applied meteorology, applied oceanography and physical oceanography) as well as the traditional areas of preparation for careers in the National Weather Service and for admission to graduate school. The Climate Change emphasis is common to both the meteorology and oceanography concentrations. The American Meteorological Society (AMS) has drafted a list of criteria to which major programs in atmospheric sciences must adhere in order to meet academic requirements. The curriculum for the meteorology concentration was developed on the bases of these criteria.
