In the School of meteorology, the general Exam consists of the student writing anddefending a Prospectus of Dissertation Research , as well as answering any

Extractions: In the School of Meteorology, the assessment by a General Examination consists of two distinct parts. The first part is called the "Qualifying Exam" (rules attached). The Qualifying Exam tests the student's breadth of knowledge of advanced meteorology. The content and required level of competence is commensurate with the scope of the graduate lecture courses taught by the School of Meteorology. In exception to standard Graduate College rules, the Qualifying Exam is a uniform exam and prepared by the entire faculty, and not by the student's Doctoral Committee. Also, the Qualifying Exam may be attempted without formal application to the Graduate College for permission to attempt the General Examination. The second part of the General Exam is usually referred to simply as "The General Exam". The General Exam may be attempted after passing the Qualifying Exam, and the student submits a formal application to the Graduate College for permission to attempt the General Examination at this time. In the School of Meteorology, the General Exam consists of the student writing and defending a "Prospectus of Dissertation Research", as well as answering any other questions about science or meteorology that the committee asks in the oral exam.
