When most people hear the word meditation, they often think of transcendental meditation or similar practices used to evoke the relaxation response. In these approaches you focus attention on one thing, usually the sensation of breath leaving and entering your body or a mantra (a special sound or phrase you repeat silently to yourself). Anything else that comes into your mind during meditation is seen as a distraction to be disregarded. These practices can give rise to very deep states of calmness and stability of attention. They are known as the concentration, or "one-pointed," type of meditationwhat Buddhists call shamatha or samadhi practices. Mindfulness is the other major classification of meditation practices, known as vipassana , or insight meditation. In the practice of mindfulness, you begin by utilizing one-pointed attention to cultivate calmness and stability, but then you move beyond that by introducing a wider scope to the observing, as well as an element of inquiry. When thoughts or feelings come up in your mind, you don't ignore them or suppress them, nor do you analyze or judge their content. Rather, you simply note any thoughts as they occur as best you can and observe them intentionally but nonjudgmentally, moment by moment, as the events in the field of your awareness.

    Extractions: one can grasp all wisdom. Meditation is the process by which a person learns to shut off the thinking mind and to begin feeling. Feeling should not be confused with emotions however where one "feels happy" or "feels sad". You can feel an emotion, but feeling isn't the emotion itself. An emotion is a state of being where a person is in a state of "happiness", or "anger", etc. A good example of feeling is when you sense someone looking at you...you can just feel someone looking at you. It does not involve the physical senses of sight, sound, taste, smell, or touch. It's on an intuitive level. In the process of meditation you are learning to activate that sense of feeling and to use it deliberately. The goal of meditation is to feel everything around you and in you, and to do it without comparisons, evaluation or judgment; to turn off the thinking mind and just feel what ever is there. In this state of feeling your awareness will gradually expand to include more of creation. Ultimately, when a person's awareness has expanded to include all of creation, they will achieve "Cosmic Consciousness". Cosmic consciousness is the state where awareness includes all space (and everything in it), all time (past, present, future), and all knowledge. In this state of cosmic consciousness, there is no separation between you and anything else. All is one ... just as you feel you and your body are all one, but on a much bigger scale.

All were founded to provide facilities for the instruction and practice of Theravada Buddhist Meditation. Each of the centres in the West is a direct offshoot of the International Meditation Centre of Yangon, Myanmar (formerly Rangoon, Burma), which was founded by Sayagyi U Ba Khin. In addition to being a highly respected meditation teacher, Sayagyi U Ba Khin was the first Accountant General of Burma after Independence in 1948. All the centres are guided by Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin , two of Sayagyi U Ba Khin's closest disciples, who have practised and taught meditation for more than forty years and have carried on the tradition since Sayagyi U Ba Khin's demise in 1971. Ten-day residential courses are usually held once a month at IMC-UK and regularly at other centres, beginning on Friday evening and ending early on Monday morning. They are led by Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin or by a local teacher trained by them. The students who attend courses at the centres are from all walks of life, professions, religions, cultural backgrounds, races and countries. Anyone who comes with an open mind can gain the necessary confidence in the technique and in himself or herself. Thus, all can attain benefits which will be proportionate to the amount of balanced effort they make.

Whenever they lost at basketball they would do whatever they could not to get angry, and gradually they learned to deal with losing at basketball. You would think that if they then lost at chess, they wouldn’t get angry. It’s the same with meditation.
