Extractions: American Marten ( Martes americana Michigan History According to records, the American marten was eliminated from Michigan around the 1930s. Removal of the mature evergreen forests and unregulated harvest of martens reduced the species to small populations in the Upper Peninsula. These eventually disappeared from the state. The 1927-28 Biennial Report stated, "They (marten and fisher) are so nearly exterminated in Michigan that there appears no chance they will ever come back." Recovery efforts were initiated as early as 1958 with releases of captured martens into the Upper Peninsula Porcupine Mountains. Additional releases in the UP were conducted in the 1970s. As part of the continued efforts to restore this native species, a translocation of 40 martens from the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve in Canada to the Mackinac State Forest area of northern Michigan occurred in 1985. Biologists have followed their progress over the years tracking pine martens to learn about their habitat use and home range needs. These studies along with sighting reports from hunters and other recreationists and incidental catches indicated the martens were readapting to their native Michigan.

Marten management and research in the NWT, 1988-89. 39 pp. ABSTRACT This report summarizes marten harvest trends, and management and research programs conducted in the NWT during 1988-89. Details on marten carcass collections and a live-trapping study conducted by the Regional Biologist in Ft. Smith will be reported elsewhere. The marten harvest in the NWT increased 28% between 1986-87 and 1987-88 to 37,249 pelts, the highest level recorded in over 100 years. In 1987-88, average pelt price was $106. Figures for the 1988-89 season are not yet available. A total of 548 entire marten carcasses were collected from trappers in Ft. Good Hope and Ft. Rae, in order to: 1) examine age and sex ratios in the harvest to assess trapping intensity, 2) examine body condition and reproductive parameters and compare animal size between areas, and 3) develop effective methods to separate juveniles from older animals, and differentiate sex if heads alone are collected. one hundred and twenty heads were also collected from martens taken by Ft. Good Hope trappers near Tunago Lake. Juveniles comprised 53 and 64% of the Ft. Good Hope and Ft. Rae carcass sample, respectively. Respective juveniles per 2+ year old female ratios were 5.82 and 6.61, and males per female ratios were 1.56 and 1.27. These ratios indicate moderate, but not necessarily heavy, trapping pressure. Lower juveniles:2+ female ratios and males: female ratios (1. 18) f or the head sample indicate relatively heavier trapping pressure in that area.

The 1988-89 harvest was 29,730 pelts, a decline from the 1987-88 high of over 37,000 pelts, but still among the highest harvests recorded this century. Average pelt price dropped 18% to $87. Figures for the 1989-90 season are not yet available. A total of 355 carcasses were collected from trappers in Ft. Good Hope, Ft. Franklin, and Ft. Rae, to: a) evaluate differences in trapping intensity, morphometrics, body condition, and reproductive parameters, and b) examine techniques to determine sex (if heads alone are collected) and separate juveniles from older age classes. The age structure of martens harvested differed considerably among the three communities. Juveniles made up 65 % of the Ft. Good Hope sample, 24 % of the Ft. Rae sample, and only 3 % of the Ft. Franklin sample. The Ft. Franklin sample was heavily skewed toward older animals. Age and sex ratios suggest that trapping pressure by the Ft. Rae trapper, and one of the three Ft. Good Hope trappers was high. The unusual age structure of the Ft. Franklin harvest may indicate a widespread prey decline and recent reproductive failures or large scale movements related to large, intense wildfires in recent years. Body fat content did not differ among areas or between years; juveniles had more fat than older martens. Body fat contents did not differ between sexes. Martens from the Sahtu were significantly larger and had higher productivity, than martens from the other communities. These martens are among the largest and most productive in North America.
