Two thirds of all the estimated 250 living marsupial species are found in Australia and its neighboring islands including New Guinea. Most of the remaining species live in South America. The only marsupial which currently occurs in North America is the common and widespread Virginia opossum ( Didelphis virginiana A circa 1928 photo of a thylacine from the Hobart Zoo. The third group of mammals are the monotremes. They feed their young milk as do other mammals, but they also posses a number of reptilian characters. While they are now extinct, one animal who shared the same land with the dinosaurs still exists today... the opossum Despite its appearance, the opossum is not related to the rat. In fact, the opossum is a marsupial, or "pouched" mammal, and is therefore related to other marsupials such as the kangaroo and the koala. Like kangaroos and koalas, infant opossums stay inside the mother's pouch to nurse and develop. The opossum holds the distinction of being North Americas's only marsupial. Opossums are born after an 11-13 day gestation period. The pink, embryonic-looking infants are so small at birth that 20 could fit into a teaspoon. The infants continue to develop inside the pouch. As they grow and the pouch becomes full, the juveniles then ride on the mother's back until they are old enough to go out on their own. The opossum has an average lifespan of 1 to 2 years. This short lifespan is due in part to the presence of many predators including dogs, cats and people. Sometimes the opossum is able to escape death by "playing 'possum" or feigning death, and in so doing the predator may lose interest in the apparently dead animal and not eat it

Eutherian mammals (which have a true placenta) also evolved from therian mammals, but evolved independently from marsupials. Although we are most familiar with marsupials like the American opossum and images of the Australian kangaroos and koalas, there are about 250 species of marsupials. However, in terms of lactation biology, most of what we know is derived from study of kangaroo species. Limited evidence from other marsupial species indicates that we can expect many similarities in strategies of lactation among most marsupials, so the kangaroo species makes an acceptable general model for much of the Order Marsupialia. Nevertheless, significant differences among marsupial species likely will be found as more species are studied. Marsupials do seem to have the potential for an extended gestation, but this has not been exploited evolutionarily. This suggests that the emphasis on lactation, as opposed to intrauterine development, should be viewed as an alternate reproductive strategy and not as a more primitive form of mammalian reproduction. Despite the immature development of the newborn marsupial, they nevertheless can travel (unaided by the mother) from the birth canal to the mammary area or pouch and can attach to a teat and begin to suck. In addition, they are able to breath the atmosphere of the pouch.

    Extractions: Entry 5: January 4, 2002 Today we were able to get a taste of Australian wildlife. We toured an animal preserve that housed many native Australian animals. We were able to see several Koalas, including one mother and baby. In case you were wondering, Koalas are not bears, they are marsupials. Other highlights of the tour included; feeding the kangaroos, riding a camel and holding a wombat. After the tour we spent a few hours on our own in Freemantle before we had to begin preparing for our second game down under. We played a Western Australian club team that was a combination of various age groups who were kind enough to come out and play us. Instead of strictly Australian rules, we played more along the lines of the International rules, holding only three players behind the restraining line, and enforcing boundaries. It was a good game, and though there is much room for improvement, we did come out victorious. The "Westies" as they called themselves, made a nice dinner for us to enjoy after the game which was a wonderful opportunity to socialize with our Australian opponents.

It has facilities for scientists and support staff from CSIRO Wildlife and Ecology and CSIRO Plant Industry . It also provides a research base for a number of other scientists engaged in projects within the CRC for Tropical Rainforest Ecology and Management (CRC-TREM) and for other researchers studying aspects of the tropical forest environment. The function of the TFRC is to research tropical forest ecosystems with a focus on developing an understanding of the interrelationships of the ecological processes involved in the rainforest system. While Australia's tropical forests comprise only 0.1% of the land mass, they provide a habitat for 25% of the plant genera, 30% of the marsupials, 60% of the bats, 30% of the frogs, 23% of the reptiles, 62% of the butterflies and 18% of the birds. Determining what species exist in the Far Northern rainforests, where they are located and what their needs are is the foundation for understanding their interrelationships and is essential when forming strategies to protect, preserve or reconstruct rainforests; therefore, a complete inventory of the region is a TFRC goal. Much of Far North Queensland's coastal rainforests have already been cleared or severely disturbed by selective logging and hunting and even the Atherton Tableland forests exist only as fragments. The impact of this disturbance on rainforest plants, animals and soils, and predicting response to further disturbances, is also an underlying theme of various research projects.

The largest number of the mammals, almost half, are the marsupials, which include the Kangaroo, Koala and Wombat. The word marsupial is derived from the Latin marsupium , which means pouch. The pouch gives protection to the very young animal and contains the teats from which it feeds. Most likely you will be the only person swimming on the incredible Ningaloo Reef , you could be the only the only people on the beach on the West Coast for hundreds of km and it is easy to travel many miles through the great forests of the south without seeing another soul. These are not merely possibilities they are the norm. Western Australia also contains one of the few remaining frontiers of non desert Australia - Kimberley. Three times the size of England, it has withstood all attempts at colonisation and is still the least populated area in Northern Australia.
