Click here to view of list of these Manitoban Heroes. Winnipeg has had a Naval Division for the last 75 years, and has had a naval presence for even much longer. There is an unexplained reason why the people of the Canadian Prairies have generated such an interest in the navy. During WWII, a large number of prairie men and women joined the navy. They flocked to recruiting divisions in cities like Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Calgary. During the war, recruiting in Winnipeg was the greatest of anyplace inland, and was only surpassed by recruiting on the east and west coast.

    Extractions: The archaeological collections are comprised of some 1,800,000 artifacts and several thousand images. These represent Precontact (pre-European), Native cultures over the last 12,000 years, early Post-Contact Native materials, and fur trade sites, as well as Egypt and the ancient Near East. In addition, the Collection includes numerous replicas of items from ancient burial caches used to display the outstanding ancient Native heritage in educational displays. History, Technology and Multicultural Studies These collections include some 62,000 artifacts that document the history of newcomers to Manitoba and from the beginnings of exploration and settlement to the present.     Extractions: The Manitoba Moose joined the American Hockey League (AHL) after the end of last season and became the primary developmental affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL) under a new partnership deal. The five year deal solidified the future of professional hockey in Winnipeg and Manitoba. With the additions of five other IHL clubs and three expansions teams, the AHL expanded to 27 teams to start the 2001-02 season. The quest for the Calder Cup began on the historic night of October 5/01 in Saint John, NB against the Saint John Flames. The Moose lost their first AHL game but eventual Moose MVP Ryan Ready made franchise history as he scored the first ever AHL goal. For the inaugural home opener on October 12, the Moose hosted the St. John's Maple Leafs and earned their first point in the league with a 4-3 overtime loss. Manitoba started slowly in October but had successive winning months in November, December and January. The team went on a four game winning streak twice in November and did not hit a four game losing skid until February. At the AHL All-Star Break in mid-February, the Moose were within striking range of the first place Quebec Citadelles and stood in eighth spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

It is interesting to note that the stated aims of the Manitoba Truck and Bus Owners Association were to: In those early days, trucking was a free-for-all: anyone with a truck could go into business and charge whatever the traffic would bear, and no bonds or insurance were needed. The more responsible carriers, let by William R. Noble, agreed there had to be a better way, and formed the (then) Manitoba Automotive Transport Association, both to protect their interests and to press for progressive legislation. Concerns of the time were insurance protection for both shippers and truckers, and road and safety conditions. In the Depression years, the trucking industry was low-key and low-budget. Long distance travel meant Winnipeg to Saskatoon, and a fair-sized company might have as many as six trucks. 26-foot trailers and GVWs of 32,000 pounds were standard. Issues such as safety, road maintenance, subsidies, service, regulation and railways were the focus of M.T.A. meetings.

The Manitoba Bull Test Station (or Sire Indexing Centre as it was known in its earlier years) has done performance evaluations on over 14,950 bulls. The Station which has, almost from the beginning, been known as the Douglas Test Station opened its gates in 1964-65 with four breeds of cattle involved. The Shorthorn, Angus and Hereford breeds were the standards of the industry at the time. A fourth breed - the Charolais - had recently been introduced to Canada. From 113 bulls the first year, the station showed a steady growth as demand for the station's evaluation services grew and as demand for station tested bulls grew. Today the station operates at capacity, testing 500 bulls a year. The original four breeds have been involved every year since 1964. A fifth "regular" was added in 1972-73 when the first Simmentals were tested at Douglas. Since that time 12 other breeds have been tested at various times. The Maine Anjou breed has missed only two years since the first bulls of that breed were tested in 1975-76 and the Gelbvieh breed has been a regular since the 1979-80 season. The Limousin breed tested bulls from 1973 consecutively to 1979 then started testing again from 1989 to 1995/96. The Salers first tested in 1986/87 then tested again from 1989 to 1995/96. Other breeds which have been tested include Blonde d'Acquitaine (7 years), Brown Swiss (6 years), Chianina (4 years), Welsh Black (3 years), Belted Galloway (3 years), and Tarentaise, Pinzgauer and Red Poll (1 year each).

The internationally acclaimed Forks Market is located at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. It is here that Miles Macdonnell and 36 Scottish and Irish laborers founded the first Red River settlement. Beginning in 1776, when there was nobody around except for a few natives and fur traders, there were five floods before The Great Flood of 1826. This flood caused the evacuation of all the town's settlers, which by this time still tallied less than 1000. There were then six more floods before the Great Flood of 1950. This flood caused an estimated $115,000,000 in damage. Winnipeggers had now had enough and resolved to build the Red River Floodway, an architectural wonder that diverts floodwater around the metropolitan area at the expense of the surrounding villages and farms. This structure was completed in 1962, ensuring that the city would never again have to be evacuated.

It is classified as a Senior Hockey League, not because the players are in their 60's or 70's but because in most towns where there is hockey, there always was a classification between Minor Hockey (young boys hockey) and Senior Hockey (adult men’s hockey). Senior or Intermediate hockey has long been a part of Canada's smaller communities and the SEMHL is one of many leagues that has provided great hockey action for many years. The SEMHL was formed back in 1951 and the following teams competed in the inaugural year: Letellier Altona Emerson Winkler Morris Over the years there have been many changes to the league, with old teams stepping down and new teams joining. The one constant that remains is the exciting hockey that over 50 years has been the drawing card in each and every community that was proud to have a team competing. During the 1950's and into the 1960's the SEMHL was a hotbed of hockey that featured many ex Pro hockey players and some that even went on to play hockey. In fact it was once said that there were better Senior hockey teams playing in Manitoba than some of the NHL Minor League teams at the time.
