Extractions: Madagascar , the eighth continent! Biologically speaking, this 1000 mile-long island, fourth largest in the world, is another continent. Some 160 million years ago the island broke from Gondwanaland, the ancient megacontinent that was comprised of Australia, India, Africa and Antarctica. This long separation has fostered the evolution of thousands of endemic species of plants and animals. Saving Madagascar's remaining wildlands is one of the highest priorities in world conservation. Fourteen species of large lemurs, the massive Elephant Birds, and a Pygmy Hippopotamus are already recently extinct. In the 1980's the government was convinced of the value of its natural heritage and currently several international conservation groups are working with Madagascar to establish and protect reserves throughout the country. It is hoped nature tourism will supply parkside communities with alternatives to slash and burn agriculture. Our tour, co-led by a Malagasy naturalist who speaks French, English and Malagasy, visits the dry forests of the northwest, rainforests on the east slope, desert spiny forests in the south, and fine coral reefs and beaches. Guest lectures will be provided by conservationists and biologists working in Madagascar. We will have leisurely nature hikes, night walks searching for nocturnal lemurs, superb ocean snorkeling and swimming, and shopping time for fine crafts. Photo opportunities are unlimited, with spectacular landscapes, intriguing peoples and close-ups of lemurs, showy insects, flowers, and colorful harmless snakes and lizards.

Africans and Indonesians reached the island in about the 5th cent. A.D. , the Indonesian immigration continuing until the 15th cent. From the 9th cent., Muslim traders (including some Arabs) from E Africa and the Comoro Islands settled in NW and SE Madagascar. Probably the first European to see Madagascar was Diogo Dias, a Portuguese navigator, in 1500. Between 1600 and 1619, Portuguese Roman Catholic missionaries tried unsuccessfully to convert the Malagasy. From 1642 until the late 18th cent. the French maintained footholds, first at Taolagnaro (formerly Fort-Dauphin) in the southeast and finally on Sainte Marie Island off the east coast. Radama I In 1883 the French bombarded and occupied Toamsina (then Tamatave), and in 1885 they established a protectorate over Madagascar, which was recognized by Great Britain in 1890. Rainilaiarivony organized resistance to the French, and there was heavy fighting from 1894 to 1896. In 1896, French troops under J. S. Gallieni defeated the Merina and abolished the monarchy. Extractions: Soon after Antananarivo was taken by the colonial forces in 1886, the french authorities began dreaming of a transport artery between Fianarantsoa and the coast. The first plan called for a toll road, but it was soon decided to invest in a more ambitious railroad link between the coffee producing highlands and a port to be built at the mouth of the Faraony River. Construction of the FCE was nothing less than a full fledged battle against nature and geography : huge tracts of forest had to be cleared and mountains pierced with picks and axes. For weeks, months, and years on end teams of hundreds of men hauled machinery and materials by hand to remote sites. The line snaked across the edges of precipitous cliffs that had to be reinforced with rock walls and through unyielding granite mountains. Thousands died from disease and construction accidents. Begun in 1926, the first (lower) half of the line opened on July 24, 1934 when the stretch between Manakara and Manampatrana was completed. Later in the same year, the longest tunnel in Madagascar (just over a kilometer) was finished and on April 1, 1936 the first train arrived in Fianarantsoa.
