Mac OS 9.2 is still included in all Macintosh systems currently on sale, but needs to be specifically selected by making a configuration change. For those individuals who wish to use Mac OS 9.x as their operating system, follow the steps below to change the default start-up operating system to Mac OS 9.x. From the Apple menu, select the "System Preferences..." option. The System Preferences window appears. Click the Startup Disk icon in the System section. The window changes to show the currently available operating system folders. Click the Mac OS 9.x folder. Click "Restart". Click "Save and Restart." The computer will reboot into Mac OS 9 and continue to do so until the startup disk is changed (see next section). From the Apple menu, select the "Control Panels" and then the "Startup Disk" option. The Startup Disk window appears.

It's something most Macintosh users take for granted. Updates and revisions to it are usually greeted with one of two responses: "GreatI wondered when they'd fix that problem," or "What a hasslemy computer works fine now, and I don't want to be bothered with this." System 7.5 Update 2 offers some nice features and fixes some problems. Read on to find out if those features and fixes justify updating for you. Update 1, released in 1994, took System 7.5 to 7.5.1; the MacOS released with the new Macintoshes in the fall of 1995 was numbered 7.5.2; and Update 2 will advance the numbers to 7.5.3. Note that Update 2 contains all that was in Update 1, so there is no need to apply Update 1 before applying Update 2 to System 7.5. You will be able to tell what System you are running by selecting the "About this Macintosh..." item at the top of the Apple menu. After Update 2 is installed, it will look something like the screen shot below.

    Extractions: Error messages referring to “Stacks” may be some of the most confusing you’ll encounter. Stacks are a confusing aspect of an already intimidating area of DOS—the Config.sys file. But it pays to spend some time learning about Stacks, because when they present a problem, a few simple adjustments may erase the trouble. An inappropriate setting, however, can give you error messages or make your computer hang or fail unexpectedly. Your introduction to Stacks should start with the file they reside in. The Config.sys (or CONFIGure the SYStem) file, is a text file in DOS that contains some of the basic information your computer needs to operate. It is read at every startup and controls the way the PC manages memory, specifies the device drivers that let the computer interact with attached hardware, and tells DOS how to process commands. The Stacks command within the Config.sys file essentially allocates a certain amount of memory to support some types of hardware. It makes sure, for example, that you can print a document in the background while using another hardware device such as a CD-ROM drive. The area is called a Stack because it’s a place to temporarily “stack” information. This setting is not necessary on all computers, and when it’s there and working properly, it’s best left alone. You’ll have to adjust it, however, if you’re system locks up and displays messages that say something like “Internal Stack Failure,” “Stack Overflow,” or “Exception Error 12.” We offer no guarantee that changing the Stacks command in DOS will eliminate your problem, but it may be the best place to start.
