4-0 out of 5 stars Great life lesson story, but illustrations are lacking...
I really enjoyed reading this story to my boys. They were laughing and very intently listening during the story, which means they really liked it. It was a very creative way to teach a very important lesson about how to settle unfair challenges in life without being violent, and also to be patient during those times. We were dissappointed though with the artwork, but that isn't what makes a good story. This is the first book I have ever felt strongly enough about to take the time to write a review, so that means something.

3-0 out of 5 stars Update of a Traditional Tale: Lizard's Home
Lizard's Home has it's basis in an old hispanic folk tale. A version for older readers appears in Joe Hayes' Watch Out For Clever Women where the villan trying to cheat using the black and white pebbles is a money lender. The simple, but very colorful and expressive illustrations of the snake andlizard in this story are sure to captivate younger readers. The cleverlittle lizard is able to outwit the wily snake without any violence. Thiswould be an excellent read-aloud for kindergarten and first grade storytime. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Crime Anthology
"The Black Lizard Anthology of Crime Fiction," edited by Ed Gorman, is a decent collection of hard-boiled crime short stories.Published in 1987 and containing 20 stories, it is heavily weighted toward the ten year period prior to its publication. There are also a handful of stories from the 1950s and 60s, but none older than that. Two of the best entries, "The Used" by Loren Estleman and "A Cold Foggy Day" by Bill Pronzini, kick things off.(Note that neither of these stories contain either Amos Walker or the "Nameless" Detective).

After that strong start, things get more uneven. For example, the Jim Thompson story that's included, "The World, Then the Fireworks," is not one of his beeter efforts and doesn't make much sense.Another story is about a rattlesnake attack and seems to have little to do with crime fiction.

Nevertheless, this is still a worthwhile collection. Each story is preceeded by a short blurb about the author and the story itself (a MUST with these kinds of collections). At just over 330 pages, it is a fine read for those who like their fiction hard-boiled. ... Read more

It's a very good book for anyone who's interested in learning about these wonderful creatures!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Companion to Loco for Lizards
This book lays out the faxts about lizards in a complete, easy to read way. It's a big subject, these are incredibly varied animals, but Mattison gets it all in there. Plenty of photos, both black and white, add to the enjoyment.
This makes it a perfect companion to Loco for Lizards, a very funny book which details lizards' crawl into movies, rock and roll, ads, legends, and myths worldwide, and even includes an interview with a gecko.

Product Description
Lizard Man Village is one of many small settlements in the Flagstaff vicinity occupied by the Sinagua between AD 1050 and 1300. Generally considered to be affiliated with the Mogollon, the major archaeological culture group in central Arizona, the Sinagua inhabited a region where three distinct groups intersected: the Mogollon, the Hohokam, and the Anasazi.

Sinagua survival strategy in this very arid region combined dispersed agriculture with hunting and foraging. It appears that an essentially egalitarian social system allowed flexibility to maximize wild resources and potential agricultural sites, or vice versa. The area is characterized by a number of small villages that probably consisted of only a few families each. Precisely because Lizard Man Village is typical of such sites, the authors chose it for intensive fieldwork. According to them, "in its very ordinariness lies its importance."

Based on the site report, the authors provide interpretations for comparison to other sites in the Southwest, as well as a detailed consideration of what went on at a small Sinagua village. Using material assemblages they present a picture of social organization through successive culture phases. ... Read more
