The Best Russian Textbook available (which isn't saying much
Having studied in excess of six languages, I can honestly claim that I have never worked with a more frustrating textbook.Grammar is poorly explained, and you frequently find yourself facing vocabulary that istranslated nowhere in the book.Tables that explain grammar will showspecial cases, but rarely, or poorly explain when and why they areso.

The dialogs don't really seem well in tune with the more common tasksin life, and the video set to accompany this book offers little addedvalue.The conversations do all flow together and create a story, if not avery compelling one.

The audio cassette that comes with this book isquite helpful.Listening to conversations on a regular basis definitelyhas helped with comprehension.

Given the rather meagre selectionavailable in Russian Textbooks, one has no choice but to recommend thisbook -- it's not a very good one (in fact, the school at which I laststudied has since abandoned it, and the teachers are presenting their ownmaterial), but it's the best out there.

The best introductory Russian textbook on the market!
I have used several introductory texts in my tenure as a Russian instructor at Colgate University, most of which have been very unspectacular.I had lost all hope of an engaging, informative andreasonably paced introductory Russian text until I used the Nachalo booksthis past semester.I will, indeed, never go back to anything else.Thegrammar is presented cohesively with interesting dialogues that presentfunctional material at a pace that students can both comfortably ingest yetdoes not make them feel as if they are failing to learn the language.Thisis the first time that my first-semester students have not questioned meduring the final week of classes as to whether or not they could trulyfunction in the language.Normally, one or the other is the problem.Igive my loudest applauds to the authors, and I look forward to using thebooks in upcoming years. ... well i bought this book in a hurry i took a gamble because there was no picture on the web.i was not surprised when it turned out to be the wrong book.then i tried to call the seller and ask for a refund but i got no response so all in all the seller sucks and i lost about 25 dollars in this whole deal.

I was very pleased with the condition of the book I purchased and the price was reasonable.

A major timewaster - only get this if you are forced
If your class forces you to get this, throw away some money and do it, but don't expect any efficiency from its use. Instead, haplessly spend your time paging back and forth looking for crumbs of information.This book was obviously designed to sell, not to help anyone learn Spanish.I have to use it for a class but find myself doing all my practical learning out of other books, just to get by. This one is a time-wasting, scattered, incomplete mess. The CDs only make it worse.

Don't get this unless you are stuck buying only this.
This only gets one star, at best.

Book starts in the middle of nowhere and wanders all over the place. It's like trying to paint a house following a fly from room to room with a roller and a can of paint.

The publisher does a better job selling, and over-selling, the book and supplies than supporting (much less explaining) the CDs and Videos that can be purchased.

If you can find a simplier book, get it. This will work, but you'll have to wade through small print, "cute" articles, and silly exercises to get to the meat of the matter - learning Spanish.

I had to buy this for a continuing education class, but I have an old set of books and LPs that I really learned from to pass the course.

Any language course that "sells" you on learning "with your computer" was probably designed by people who think the computers on Star Trek really talked....

I am a student that had to use this manual for a class and being able to interact with the tape for the oral excersizes and the book for written excersizes I learned the correct pronunceations and spellings for a large vocabular of words and phrases ... Read more

This CD provides the pronunciation for the vocabulary lists in chapters Preliminary through 22 of the Siskin/Williams/Field textbook, Débuts.As such, it wasn't what I needed; I was searching for the Student Audio Program to accompany the workbook for Part 2 of Débuts (ISBN-13: 978-0-07-322869-3; ISBN-10: 0-07-322869-9).As it turns out, Amazon does not stock this product; one needs to go directly to the publisher (McGraw-Hill) at 1-800-338-3987, set up an account, and order a copy.This was a bit of work, but McGraw-Hill had plenty of copies in stock.I've given the CD only a single star rating because all of it is included in the Student Audio Program; thus, there is no need to purchase it if one opts for the complete set of 11 CDs. ...
