Excerpt: Common Lisp, commonly abbreviated CL, is a dialect of the Lisp programming language, published in ANSI standard document ANSI INCITS 226-1994 (R2004), (formerly X3.226-1994 (R1999)). From the ANSI Common Lisp standard the Common Lisp HyperSpec has been derived for use with web browsers. Common Lisp was developed to standardize the divergent variants of Lisp (though mainly the MacLisp variants) which predated it, thus it is not an implementation but rather a language specification. Several implementations of the Common Lisp standard are available, including free and open source software and proprietary products. Common Lisp is a general-purpose, multi-paradigm programming language. It supports a combination of procedural, functional, and object-oriented programming paradigms. As a dynamic programming language, it facilitates evolutionary and incremental software development, with iterative compilation into efficient run-time programs. Common Lisp includes CLOS, an object system that supports multimethods and method combinations. It is extensible through standard features such as Lisp macros (compile-time code rearrangement accomplished by the program itself) and reader macros (extension of syntax to give special meaning to characters reserved for users for this purpose). Common Lisp is a dialect of Lisp; it uses S-expressions to denote both code and data structure. Function and macro calls are written as lists, with the name of the function first, as in these examples: Common Lisp has many data typesmore than many other langu...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6068 ... Chapters: Genera, Interlisp, Movitz. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 24. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Genera is a commercial operating system and development environment for Lisp machines developed by Symbolics. It is essentially a fork of an earlier operating system originating on the MIT AI Lab's Lisp machines which Symbolics had used in common with LMI and Texas Instruments. Genera is also sold by Symbolics as Open Genera, which runs Genera on computers based on an Alpha-Processor using Tru64 Unix. This software is available as proprietary software, however, older versions of the software are available as free software. Genera is an example of an operating system written in Lisp. It is an object-oriented operating system. Genera supports incremental and interactive development of complex software using a mix of programming styles with extensive support for object-oriented programming. The Lisp Machine operating system was written in Lisp Machine Lisp. The Lisp Machine was a single user workstation initially targeted at software developers for artificial intelligence projects. The Lisp Machine had a large bitmap screen, a mouse, a keyboard, a network interface, a disk drive and slots for expansion. The operating system was supporting this hardware. The Lisp Machine Operating system provided (among others): This was already a complete operating system and development environment for a Lisp-based single-user operating system. The MIT Lisp Machine operating system has been developed from the middle of the 1970s to the early 1980s. In 2006 the source code for this Lisp Machine operating system from MIT was released as open source. Symbolics developed new Lisp Machines and published the operating system under the name Genera. Genera 8.5 is the latest version. Symbolics Genera has ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=61699 ... Read more

Excerpt: Symbolics refers to two companies: now-defunct computer manufacturer Symbolics, Inc., and a privately held company that acquired the assets of the former company and continues to sell and maintain the Open Genera Lisp system and the Macsyma computer algebra system. The symbolics.com domain was originally registered on 15 March 1985, making it the first .com-domain in the world. However, on 27 August 2009, it was sold to XF.com Investments. The current Symbolics web site is available at symbolics-dks.com. A view of running processes in a Symbolics machineSymbolics, Inc. was a computer manufacturer headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts and later in Concord, Massachusetts, with manufacturing facilities in Chatsworth, California (a suburb of Los Angeles). Its first CEO, chairman, and founder was Russell Noftsker. Symbolics designed and manufactured a line of Lisp machines, single-user computers optimized to run the Lisp programming language. Symbolics also made significant advances in software technology, and offered one of the premier software development environments of the 1980s and 1990s, now sold commercially as Open Genera for Tru64 UNIX on the HP Alpha. The Lisp Machine was the first commercially available "workstation" (although that word had not yet been coined). Symbolics was a spinoff from the MIT AI Lab, one of two companies to be founded by AI Lab staffers and associated hackers for the purpose of manufacturing Lisp machines. The other was Lisp Machines, Inc., although Symbolics attracted most of the hackers, and more funding. Symbolics' initial product, the LM-2 (introduced in 1981), was a repackaged version of the MIT CADR Lisp machine design. The operating system and software development environment, over 500,000 lines, was wri... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=28195 ... Read more
