4-0 out of 5 stars Mandrake is great - but this is NOT a book!
........................It's software, a CD of the Mandrake distribution of the Linux operating system. If you believe you're ordering a book, you'll be disappointed................I decided to use Mandrake for Linux, instead of anotherdistribution. And I'm very happy with it. :)

Mandrake is an excellentdistribution of Linux, and if you're going to run Linux, I highly recommendit.(That's why I give this review 4 stars.)Downers are the poorlywritten manual, and the fact that a mouse is *REQUIRED* for you to installthe software. If you don't have a Linux-compatible mouse BEFORE you begininstallation, you're going to be very frustrated about halfway-thru theinstallation.

(I understand Mandrake 7.1 solves this problem.)

Mandrakeis excellent for newcomers to Linux because it has great graphical userinterfaces, to make the 'migration' from Windows easier. It's also easy toset up dual-boot so that you do not need to give up your Windows stuff, andit contains software to re-partition your existing hard drive WITHOUTerasing all your data.Good thinking! :)

In summary, Mandrake is a verygood Linux distribution and I recommend it.However, you will probablywant a good Linux book to go with it, and I highly recommend gettingO'Reilly's "Running Linux" as a companion to your new Linuxadventures..........................

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandrake OS 7 Complete
Theis is not actually a book. I ordered this item after reading Mr. Anarchy's review, expecting a book. Much to my surprise, it was actually just the Linux Mandrake operating system itself, with a user guide that isavailable for free in PDF form, at www.linux-mandrake.com. The operatingsystem itself can also be downloaded for free.

This package is still apretty good deal. For about $20, you get the installation CD, the sourcesCD, which contains a ton of Linux software in RPM format, the printedinstallation guide, the printed 390 page user guide, a bootable floppy, anda few pieces of paper containing mostly advertisements. The only realcompelling item in the box is the "extras" CD, which has 5 booksin PDF format. They are: Redhat Linux Unleashed, Teach Yourself KDE 1.1 in24 Hours, Teach Yourself Gimp In 24 Hours, Teach Yourself Linux In 24Hours, and Special Edition Using Linux. That's roughly $100 worth of books, but they are in PDF, not actual printed books. The extras CD also containsSta Office 5.1, but that can be downloaded for free as well.

The onlyactual printed book is the user guide, which is questionable in it'susefulness. While it is geared toward beginners, it doesn't go too in-depthabout subjects, instead only covering the basics and sometimes not givingenough information. It also seems to have been written by someone whodoesn't speak English as a first language, as there are numerous grammarerrors, and I found myself reading sentences numerous times to grasp whatthe author was saying.

I still believe that this item is worthpurchasing, considering it's low price. It saves you quite a bit of timedownloading the 650 meg Linux Mandrake OS, which must then be burned onto aCDR. For someone starting Linux, there isn't a better distibution thanMandrake. However, for someone looking for printed word on Linux, especially a beginner, I recommend the book Running Linux, which has helpedmany people get started in Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars My review for "Linux Mandrake OS 7.0 Complete"
I thought this book was well thought out. It has vivid pictures and screenshots of many of the Mandrake Linux gui's (Gnome, KDE, etc.). It helped me learn Linux quickly. When i started reading, i had barely an ideaof what Linux was; but upon completion of this book, i have now become a(self proclaimed) guru. I would reccomend this book for the novice tointermediate Linux user. ... Read more

Let me get this straight. These jokers cut & paste and reformatted some Wikipedia articles, published them in a 120 page book that they're selling for $56, presumably in the hopes that there are people out there sufficiently knowledgeable to care about the internals of openSSL but who don't know that Wikipedia is a free online resource?Surely this must be a joke. ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Stanford Physics Information Retrieval System (SPIRES) was originally developed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in 1969, from a design based on a 1967 information study of physicists at SLAC. The system was designed as a physics database management system (DBMS) to deal with high-energy-physics preprints. Written in PL/1, SPIRES ran on an IBM mainframe. In the early 1970s, an evaluation of this system resulted in the decision to implement a new system for use by faculty, staff and students at Stanford University. SPIRES was renamed the Stanford Public Information Retrieval System. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely satisfied customer!
Book came in new condition as stated and was received very quickly!Would definitely do business again and highly recommend store/seller!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome!!!
well i ordered it cause i needed it for my class and it got here just when they said it would and im happy bout that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Actually went to the school who has these teachers.
The exercises are bland, and definitely doesn't even begin to properly cover linux. almost treats linux as a step child. give it a cookie just because its here and i dont want to hear its supporters cry. it also seems to treat the distribution fedora as the alpha and omega of linux. it does vaguely mention there are others, but just barely and easy to miss.

the good points are, its almost idiot proof. i say almost, because, well, most people still couldn't get the ideas given in this book. the subjects are decently explained, and all exercises are incrementally stepped through. how tough is it to follow this?

type dir /s into command prompt to see a listing of the files in your current directory and all directories below it. some how, people manage to mangle that. its literally like, step one leads directly to step two, just type what you see on page, its done. maybe that was the problem it babied them too much, lord help us if we are required to think for ourselves. hi pete, meet repete.

Thank goodness my teacher Mr. BOz was there to clear the fuzzy parts of it, and actually understand the in depth workings (mostly in the linux areas). *shameless plug to praise him*

This book is probably better for one grade under. like the class where the teacher slowly says "This is a computer!" *hears ooos and ahhs from crowd* "press this button to turn it on!* *even more ooos and ahhs*.

Still, this is a good book to have for reference, just don't expect to be enthralled to learn. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great transition from pure tech to warm community.
Although not required reading to get a linux system up and running, Dr. Bentson puts technical detail into system perspective. This book gives understanding and depth to a serious computer experiance. If you have any desire to make a contribution to the linux/free software community, I highly recommend getting "Inside Linux".

5-0 out of 5 stars Linux for non-programmers
This book covers the inner working of a real operating system (Linux). It's not intended to be a technical description of the inner working of the system - which is great for all us non-programmers. If you want to know "why" and "how" Linux works without facing the source code, this book is for you. I consider it a must-have for any intermediate Linux user.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that finally gets to the point and I'm awake.
Most books tell you that they are going to explain certain concepts, ideas and facts, then leave you wondering,"Why did I buy the book." Mr. Bentson has smacked those books off the shelf with his book. Most books on computers tend to be below or above the readers comprehension. Never no middle ground.Being new to Linux I wanted to get an idea what Linux was and is. I found the book for that purpose."Inside look at Linux" is well laid out. By chopping up the sections it allows you to get a cup of coffe or surf the NET and remember where you were. I feel he nails his purpose for this book by explaining terms in easy to understand and comprehend language."Inside look at Linux"had me searching for the answers to the terms I did not know or understand. If I give him a "10" he won't strive for a better book. Good job. Jim Ballo ... Read more

Product Description
Comparison of the Microsoft Windows and Linux computer operating systems is a common topic of discussion among their users. Windows is the most popular proprietary personal computer operating system, while Linux is the most prominent operating system that is free software (note that some proprietary components, such as compiled, binary only drivers provided by hardware manufacturers, are included in many Linux distributions). Both operating systems not only compete for user base in the personal computer market, but also compete in the server and embedded systems markets and are used in homes, schools, businesses, government offices, and supercomputers. Windows dominates in the desktop and personal computer markets with about 90% of the desktop market share, and accounted for about 66% of all servers sold (not used) in the year 2007.[citation needed] In server revenue market share (2007Q4) Windows achieved 36.3% and Linux achieved 12.7%. As of June 2009, Linux powered 88.6% of the world's most powerful supercomputers, compared to Windows' 1.0%. ... Read more

Excerpt: AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) is the name given to a series of proprietary operating systems sold by IBM for several of its computer system platforms, based on UNIX System V with 4.3BSD-compatible extensions. AIX runs on 32-bit or 64-bit IBM POWER or PowerPC CPUs (depending on version) and can address up to 32 terabytes (TB) of random access memory. AIX Version 1, introduced in 1986 for the IBM 6150 RT workstation, was based on UNIX System V Releases 1 and 2. In developing AIX, IBM and INTERACTIVE Systems Corporation (whom IBM contracted) also incorporated source code from 4.2 and 4.3 BSD UNIX. Among other variants, IBM later produced AIX Version 3 (also known as AIX/6000), based on System V Release 3, for their IBM POWER-based RS/6000 platform. Since 1990, AIX has served as the primary operating system for the RS/6000 series (later renamed IBM eServer pSeries, then IBM System p, and now IBM Power Systems). AIX Version 4, introduced in 1994, added symmetric multiprocessing with the introduction of the first RS/6000 SMP servers and continued to evolve through the 1990s, culminating with AIX 4.3.3 in 1999. Version 4.1, in a slightly modified form, was also the standard operating system for the Apple Network Server systems sold by Apple Computer to complement the Macintosh line. In the late 1990s, under Project Monterey, IBM and the Santa Cruz Operation planned to integrate AIX and UnixWare into a single 32-bit/64-bit multiplatform UNIX with particular emphasis on running on Intel IA-64 (Itanium) architecture CPUs. A beta test version of AIX 5L for IA-64 systems was released, but according to documents released in ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2114 ... Read more
