5-0 out of 5 stars Be careful. They have the title wrong!
...It is meant to accompany the book "Keepers of Life: Discovering Plants Through Native American Stories and Earth Activities for Children" The teachers guide is good, but it is not simply a teachers edition of the other book. It doesn't just have a bunch of answers (there are no tests or quizes in the first book anyway). It has suggestions and activities to add to the experience of the the first book, but it isn't necissary for you to have this book to get good use out of the main book, which is written to be used by a teacher anyway, not individual students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Gem
After purchasing countless science kits throughout the years for use in my homeschool, I found most to be lacking in some way. Many failed to actually teach anything. Not so with this book. For high school level students I found it an excellent way to incorporate labs which were not only fun and captivating, but educational. Granted this book is written for group purposes, but I did not have much trouble using it with only one or two students. I particularly liked the fact that I could purchase the supplies I needed online in the amount that I needed, and was not paying a fortune for a premade kit which contained 30 of everything, far more than I was ever going to need.

Do note that I purchased this book online [...] where every supply needed for this entire book was stated and available for purchase...something I greatly appreciated. Even with having some of the supplies already on hand, like a microscope, labs like this cost money. It was nice however to have everything I needed, with no suprises, and know that this book would not end up on the back of some shelf because I did not have "the common items found in most household kitchens" which is what most science experiement books state. You will not find everything you need for this book in your kitchen!

For the Forensic Science fan it is a blast! Students, while learning, really do get to solve mysteries. There were times when I set up entire crime scenes, complete with crime scene tape, dead bodies (not real ones of course), and many needed-to-find clues. As a homeschooler I even added a trial to one lab which was not something stated in the book. My "scientist" used his diagram and findings as testimony. It was quite a unique and memorable experience.

The book is divided into 4 Sections with 7 to 9 labs in each section, many that take 2 or 3 days to complete. The beginning of the book, Section 1, has to do with Critical Thinking and contains labs having to do with Forgery, Tire Track Evaluation, etc.... Section 2 covers Physical Science with Glass Fractures, Fingerprinting, Blood-drop Analysis, etc.... Section 3 is Life Sciences. The books gets more fun as it moves along and requires more hands-on lab work. Section 3 contains Urinalysis, Dental Forensics, DNA, Hair Identification, etc.... The last section, Section 4, covers Earth Science, Archaeology, and Anthropology. That's when you learn about Preserving Flesh, Identifying Missing Bones, Dating-Radioactive Style, etc.... Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

I could see this book becoming a source of frustration if you tried to determine and locate every supply needed for every lab. However, if you manage to find the site I did, or one similar, who can provide you with everything you need, this can be an excellent way to incorporate labs at home, have fun, and learn all at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as promised!
The person wrote that the book was new but was selling it cheaper to get rid of it.I was slightly skeptical but bought it anyway. The book IS new and in excellent condition. It looks like it just came off the store's shelf.Thank you for being truthful!

4-0 out of 5 stars a fun resource
I teach 6th grade science and this book has lots of practical hands-on ideas for classroom use.The labs are fairly easy to implement and they are engaging for the students. This book is especailly good for a summer school program or enrichment work.Perfect for middle school level.I don't think it would work well for much beyond middle school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Science Supplement or It's Own Science Course
Fully developed lesson plans for 6th-12th graders on various aspects of forensic science.Requires some gathering of materials, all easily obtainable, but not necessarily household items.Requires some prep on the part of the teacher, but not excessive prep work.Includes activities that can be completed in one day, and activities that involve observation over a time span of days or weeks. There is an elementary school edition for younger children.I wish it were still offered in the original spiral binding, though.

High quality addition to traditional science curriculum or good as a stand-alone special course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading and Math Teachers
I am the math teacher but I am partnering with a reading teacher to co-teach the lessons in this book.We have already completed the handwriting lab and the logic lab with a dead boyfriend. This lab was very engaging to my "player" boys in junior high and they they had to figure out which of the 6 girlfriends killed the boyfriend.Lots of fun!

The next lab we are doing is a self-generated lab involving fingerprints. We read through the lab and didn't like the story so we are inspired to write our own, once again because of the book.

Personally, I love this book and am ordering my own copy of it.It promotes reading because the students read the lab and find the answers. All we do is monitor the kids and it is lots of fun to see who they think committed the crime.

Great book! ... Read more

Product Description
This book is a plea to everyone but especially to politicians, administrators, farmers and businessmen to take conservation seriously and as a result to integrate conservation with other activities. Through research work and land management the author shows how he came to realise that conservation matters much more fundamentally than is accepted by conventional wisdom. He maintains that the significance of conservation will not be recognised until it is seen within its proper contents of time and this provides the theme of the book. The newness of conservation as an idea and its complexities still provide obstacles to understanding its real significance. In the past too much emphasis has been put on the negative and esoteric aspects of conservation. This book is important because it emphasises its positive and common-sense aspects and in so doing demonstrates that conservation should now be accepted as a major national and international objective of vital concern to everybody now and in the future. ... Product Description

Consumption Intensified examines how self-identified middle class Brazilians in São Paulo redefined their class during Brazil’s economic crisis of 1981–1994. With inflation soaring to an astounding 2700 percent, their consumption practices intensified, not only in relation to the national crisis but also to the expanding global consumer culture. Drawing on her observations of everyday practices and on representations of the middle class in popular culture, anthropologist Maureen O’Dougherty explores both the logic and incoherence of middle- to upper-middle-class Brazilian life.
With the supports of middle-class living threatened—job security, quality education, home ownership, savings, ease of consumption—the means and meaning of “middle class” were thrown into question. The sector thus redefined itself through both class- and race-based claims of moral and cultural superiority and through privileged consumption, a definition the media underscored by continually addressing middle-class Brazilians as consumers—or rather, as consumers denied. In these times, adults became more flexible in employment, and put stakes in their children’s expensive private education. They engaged in elaborate comparison shopping, stockpiling of goods, and financial strategizing. Ongoing desire for distinction and “first- world” modernity prompted these Brazilians to buy foreign goods through contraband, thereby defying state protectionist policy. Discontented with the constraints of the national economy, they welcomed neoliberalism.
By uncovering connections between culture and politics, O’Dougherty complicates understandings of the middle class as a social group and category. Illuminating the intricate relation between identity and local and global consumption, her work will be welcomed by students and scholars in anthropology and Latin American studies, and those interested in consumption, popular culture, politics, and globalization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Folks Like Us
O'Dougherty has captured the spirit of an era when middle-class dreams met rampant inflation head-on. She analyses the role neighborhoods, ethnic origins, government programs, and personal connections played in the widely differing fates of her informants, but time and again theories give way to the fascinating concrete details of Brazilians trying to get ahead, or merely to stay afloat, in the midst of a swollen tide of economic chaos. Implicit in her critique is the notion that the dream itself was highly suspect, and detrimental to the Brazilian ethos, but Hey! Doesn't everyone want to go to Disneyworld? ... Read more

Product Description
Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) for Pesticide Regulatory Purposes stems from the experience of the EC funded project DEMETRA. This project combined institutes involved in the regulatory process of pesticides, industries of the sector and scientists to develop and offer original software for the prediction of ecotoxicity of pesticides. Then to be used within the dossier preparation for pesticide registration. The basis of this book is more than three-years of research activities, discussions, studies and successful models. This experience represents a useful example not only for the case of pesticides, but also for the prediction of ecotoxicity and toxicity in general.

QSAR is used to link a given property of a chemical compound with some features related to its structure. The theoretical toxicological, chemical and information technology aspects will be treated considering the regulatory issues. Innovative hybrid systems will be described, for the toxicity prediction of pesticides and related compounds, directly useful for pesticide evaluation within the Dossier preparation for pesticide registration. Five endpoints will also be discussed, addressing issues as standardisation, verification, validation, accessibility, reproducibility.

The driving force for Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) for Pesticide Regulatory Purposes is that all the issues of concern for end-users are analysed, discussed and solutions proposed further. An innovative feature is that, in order to offer powerful QSAR models, the book discusses and reports on integrated QSAR models, combined into a unique hybrid system.

* Assesses the needs of regulators for pesticide approval and how these needs affect QSAR models
* Combines theoretical discussion with practical examples, including five worked examples of hybrid systems
* Refers to original software available through the internet ... Read more

Product Description
Why do women live longer than men? Does ownership of paired X chromosomes confer more prolonged survival on females, or is the gender difference in life-expectancy a cumulative consequence of differing life experiences for women and men? The areas of gender differences in aging, functional capacity, and the response to physical activity have often been the basis for speculation rather than informed judgment. Gender, Physical Activity, and Aging draws upon the sound knowledge base of leading investigators to provide objective, evidence-based evaluations of particular facets of the aging process. Focusing on gender differences, it examines the rate of aging, loss of functional capacity, disability, and the quality of life among the elderly and presents evidence of potential modification through physical activity and lifestyle. ... This is the first time I have seen a book dedicated to exercise and bone. Usually bone books are about medication, biology, etc. and then they pay lipservice to exercise. The authors are to be congratulated on providing a very readable, beautifully illustrated and yet authoritative text for those of us doing Master's degrees, Honors degrees, or even PhDs in the field of bone research. I imagine that graduate students all over the US are eternally grateful for having all this information in one place. It really clears up those comples issues such as how to interpret DXA scans, why results of different exercise studies differ and the problems of stress fractures, amenorrhea etc.

It even has research suggestions for a wide variety of students - see the later chapters.

Editorial Review

Product Description

Increasing interest in the study of coordinated activity of brain cell ensembles reflects the current conceptualization of brain information processing and cognition. It is thought that cognitive processes involve not only serial stages of sensory signal processing, but also massive parallel information processing circuitries, and therefore it is the coordinated activity of neuronal networks of brains that give rise to cognition and consciousness in general. While the concepts and techniques to measure synchronization are relatively well characterized and developed in the mathematics and physics community, the measurement of coordinated activity derived from brain signals is not a trivial task, and is currently a subject of debate. Coordinated Activity in the Brain: Measurements and Relevance to Brain Function and Behavior addresses conceptual and methodological limitations, as well as advantages, in the assessment of cellular coordinated activity from neurophysiological recordings. The book offers a broad overview of the field for investigators working in a variety of disciplines (neuroscience, biophysics, mathematics, physics, neurology, neurosurgery, psychology, biomedical engineering, computer science/computational biology), and introduces future trends for understanding brain activity and its relation to cognition and pathologies. This work will be valuable to professional investigators and clinicians, graduate and post-graduate students in related fields of neuroscience and biophysics, and to anyone interested in signal analysis techniques for studying brain function.
