Every Sunday School program should have this book!
I write the sunday school lessons for our church and have found this book to be a very helpful resource.All of the activities use everyday items that most households have.They are easy to do (10 min. or less) and WORK!!!Kids get bored with crafts every week and these activities break up the monotony (boys especially love them).The pages are reproducible with a bible passage, and a scientific explanation of how and why the experiment works.Which is nice to send home with kids to create discussion at home.I have several sunday school craft and activitybooks, and this one trumps them all. ... Horst Hendriks-Jansen demonstrates a clear understanding of all the modern arguments about the nature of intelligence and how they relate to each other.He has a clear and logical writing style that explains and debunksmany important theories.Although many of these theories and criticisismshave appeared in other places, this book brings them all together andrelates them. He describes his theory of interactive emergence and thenotion of language as scaffolding for learning.This weaves together manycontemporary ideas into a consistient whole. Good scope; figures and index fall short
For a cross-disciplinary mathematical biologist who is to be an end-user of cardiac models, this book gave a quick introduction to electrocardiograms, electromechanics, and pertinent computing algorithms. It provides worked examples which should be useful in conjunction with a dedicated course book e.g. on partial differential equations. Regrettably, many terms and abbreviations used in the text are absent in the index, detracting from the book's value as a quick reference. The illustrations could be much better, considering the multidimensional, multivariate nature of the system. Instead, they suffer from unlabeled axes, nonuniform color maps in multi-panel figures, or wasteful use of color plates where different linestyles would suffice. All in all, not a feast for the eye but a reasonably concise, fairly well-structured primer on a specific sub-area of a huge research field. ... Read more

The earliest sites at Olduvai Gorge in Tanania are among the best documented and most important for studies of human evolution. This book investigates the behavior of hominids at Olduvai using data of stone tools and animal bones, as well as the results of work in taphonomy (how animals become fossils), the behavior of mammals, and a wide range of ecological theory and data. By illustrating the ways in which modern and prehistoric evidence is used in making interpretations, the author guides the reader through the geological, ecological, and archeological areas involved in the study of humans.

Based on his study of the Olduvai excavations, animal life, and stone tools, the author carefully examines conventional views and proposals about the early Olduvai sites. First, the evidence of site geology, tool cut marks, and other clues to the formation of the Olduvai sites are explored. On this basis, the large mammal communities in which early hominids lived are investigated, using methods which compare sites produced mainly by hominids with others made by carnivores. Questions about hominid hunting, scavenging, and the importance of eating meat are then scrutinied. The leading alternative positions on each issue are discussed, providing a basis for understanding some of the most contentious debates in paleo-anthropology today.

The dominant interpretive model for the artifact and bone accumulations at Olduvai and other Plio-Pleistocene sites has been that they represent "home bases," social foci similar to the campsites of hunter-gatherers. Based on paleo-ecological evidence and ecological models, the author critically analyes the home base interpretation and proposes alternative views. A new view of the Olduvai sites—that they represent stone caches where hominids processed carcasses for food—is shown to have important implications for our understanding of hominid social behavior and evolution.

Richard Potts is professor of anthropology at the George Washington University and director of the human origins program at the Smithsonian Institution. Millspaugh and Marzluff's text is the most complete and up-to-date resource for information regarding the application and analysis of radio-telemetry studies.All aspects, from sampling design to analytical techniques, are described in depth.Anyone who is considering conducting a telemetry study or the analysis of any telemetry data should read this book front to back first.

Radio tracking and animal populations covers all aspects of radio tracking wild animals, from designing the study right through to analyzing results and drawing conclusion from the findings.I have found this book to be the most comprehensively referenced, and in depth piece of literature on radio tracking that I have managed to locate so far.
I have constantly used this book while carrying out a telemetry study as the research for my masters degree, and recommend this book as the ideal starting point for anyone considering carying out a radio tracking study of wild animals.
My only regret concerning this book is that I didn't come across it earlier in my studies.
