3-0 out of 5 stars Good as a starting place
I had this book as a kid, and I enjoyed looking through it, but didn't learn much from it.I got this as a basic guide to help my kids learn about the states. We homeschool, and this book is serving as an introduction to the states, supplemented with books from the library about the people, places and events mentioned in this book. There isn't much information on each state, just a few, almost random facts. It works for us, but I would not recommend this book to someone else.I got it mostly because I was familiar with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars The layout is nice, but it could have been written better
The activities in this book are complicated and dull. Example:
Make a movie in your mind. When you think "south" think "S" for sun. What is the sun shining on? It's shining on Christmas carolers who are standing on top of the space shuttle, Columbia, as it's landing. Now that would be some sight, wouldn't it? Sunny south with carolers = South Carolina.Picture the space shuttle, Columbia.Columbia = Columbia.Columbia, South Carolina.

My daughter gave up on this book pretty quickly, and I don't blame her.
The black and white pictures aren't always clear. It took me a while to realize that the smudge on the South Carolina page is actually supposed to represent the bombing of Fort Sumter.

I would encourage the authors to try this book again, but to have a panel of children give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down to the activities. And fix the graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars great learning tool
We just got the book kids learn america for our homeschool. As a family we hope to learn more about the nation that we live in.The first state in the book is connecticut. It talks about Mark Twain living and writing there. So that opened a discussion on his writing as we will be watching a movie based on his writings tonight as a family.I look forward to learn more as we got through this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Information Source For Children
Did you know that Minnesota, the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" has an amazing 90 lakes called Long Lake?Or did you know that the two Choctaw Indian words "okla," meaning people, and "humma," meaning red, makes up the state Oklahoma?Well, these facts along with a plethora of other information can be obtained in this fantastic book.

This book is absolutely perfect for children. Each state is consisely laid out in an easy-to-read format that is loaded with information. The drawings are also excellent in peppering the pages to break up all of the details.

This is a type of hands-on book that challanges children to learn about their country in fifty educationally-fun geography lessons. This book gives its readers a lesson in human spirit by teachinga little bit about America's past, while imploring everyone to partake in it's future. This book is a must read for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Home Schoolers

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful, interesting, and fun book
I was introduced to 'Crime Scene Investigations' while attending ateaching workshop. I ordered it right away for my high school levelCriminal Justice class. It is full of experiments which apply to virtuallyevery unit my class covers. With the help of the book, I have set up aclassroom Crime Lab, of which I am quite proud. We are able to perform anastounding number of experiments, and the lab causes quite a stir with ourvisitors.

As a retired police officer, I am very aware of the validity ofthe lessons presented in 'Crime Scene' and feel they would be of value toany of my students who decide on a career in Law Enforcement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok
I was looking for a creativity book for Sunday school. I didn't realize that this book is only on the creation. I wanted something more of a variety of range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Useful
This is a very useful book to find all sorts of ways to explain science and to how good the Creator is, and yes, that would be the triune God.I love that my kids can be fascinated by the lessons themselves and in return also be that much more fascinated by a God who is so amazing and created each person, including them and other atheist reviewers, so perfectly and wonderfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned something
This has so many interesting experiments and projects to really teach about how wonderful God made everything. So far the lessons I have used have wowwed the K-2nd graders I'm teaching. They even remember what was created from the week before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful resource for teaching real science to children
The word science comes from scientia, meaning knowledge. This book is very helpful to convey knowledge of the world God created through science, observing and discovering first hand the world related to all things. The book is divided into six days of creation and the seventh day of rest (being devoted to inertia, how fitting). Each day of creation has ample science activities and experiments related to what was created.

Included are simple sheets to help children record their hypothesis (what I think will happen), observations (what happened), and conclusions (what was different or same as hypothesized); this is real science.

A great tool for preschool and younger elementary students. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected!!
The worksheets were not at all what I was hoping for.I was very disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I had expected, but not bad either
The drawings in this book are excellent, and perfect for labeling: not too busy and very true-to-life.The book covers a wide variety of biology topics, including the Kingdoms of Life, plant and animal cells, biomes, vertebrates and invertebrates, and life cycles. But I'm puzzled about why it's labeled for grades 5-8.Around here, kids learn about life cycles, food webs, and the parts of a plant in early elementary school.About half of the sheets are on lower elementary topics. Also, the subtitle reads "Activities to Extend and Enhance Science and Biology Studies."These are not extension activities, but very simple labeling worksheets. In this teacher's opinion, copying labels onto a worksheet is not an "activity."There are a handful of charts to fill in, but most of the pages would take about 5 minutes to complete by copying a few words from another source. There's nothing wrong with labeling worksheets, but I was expecting more depth and enrichment based on the subtitle. This book needs to be described differently: it's a worksheet book for elementary grades. If that's what you're looking for, this book is a good choice. ... Human activities are creating environmental problems that affect everyone, and place all of us in a decision-making role about environmental issues. To make intelligent decisions, we need to understand how the environment works; therefore, each of the activities in this book was designed to teach one or more basic concepts of environmental science. Environmental issues generate strong opinions, extreme positions and contradictory claims. To analyze these issues requires not only understanding of the environment, but also an ability to evaluate evidence and arguments critically. Therefore, another major purpose of this book is to provide opportunities for readers to practice critical thinking and scientific methods of inquiry. ... Read more

Product Description

Physical Activity and Obesity, Second Edition, addresses an array of topics that explore and divulge the links between physical activity (or inactivity) and obesity. Leading scientists from various backgrounds team up to provide an unrivaled resource examining the latest research and developments in the field. Each chapter provides researchers and practitioners with a clear explanation of the concepts, research techniques, and results of studies critical to understanding physical activity and the obesity epidemic.

In the 10 years since the first edition of this book was published, the field of physical activity and obesity has mushroomed with new research, sparking the need for not only a new edition but an innovative and refreshing approach to the contents. Editors Bouchard and Katzmarzyk create a go-to resource with 89 succinct, authoritative chapters that may be used independently or as a complete text. Packed with the most up-to-date information linking obesity and physical activity, this comprehensive book

• delves into areas of uncertainty and controversy instead of avoiding them or skirting the issues;

• emphasizes, where appropriate, the underlying mechanisms between physical activity and obesity; and

• points to research areas that need further exploration and attention.

The nine parts of the book flow logically and address obesity in all populations, including children and adults of various backgrounds, ethnicities, and social classes. An overview of the methods used in assessing the levels of sedentary behavior and physical activity is given, followed by a global view of the problem of physical inactivity and obesity. Readers will learn about the key determinants of physical activity levels and obesity and the links between a sedentary lifestyle and the risk of obesity. Other topics examined include behavioral and environmental correlates and determinants of obesity, the relationship between low physical activity energy expenditure and obesity risk, clinical implications, and policy and research issues related to physical activity and obesity.

Physical Activity and Obesity, Second Edition, helps readers better understand the role of physical activity in the overall energy balance equation. The unique format, expert contributors, and complete references make this resource indispensable for researchers, health and exercise practitioners, and students studying the ever-expanding topic of obesity as it relates to physical activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine survey highly recommended for any health or sports collection
Claude Bouchard and Peter T. Katzmarzyk edit PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND OBESITY, which appears in its second updated edition to survey links between physical activity, inactivity, and obesity. From areas of controversy and uncertainty to underlying physical activity research and research areas for further exploration, this packs in a fine survey highly recommended for any health or sports collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The go-to resource for those who work with overweight patients
Is obesity the result of overeating, lack of exercise or both? This book helps clarify the issue of obesity as it relates to the lack of proper physical activity and how to address the problem.

The author tells us, "Physical activity is recognized as a critical aspect of behavioral weight control interventions. Typically, behavioral weight control programs have encouraged participants to gradually increase their activity until they achieve a level of at least 1000 kcal/week of moderate-intensity physical activity. This level of activity would equate to approximately 10 miles of brisk walking per week and would take about 150 min per week to complete. The 150 min per week exercise goal has been adopted in several large weight loss trials such as the Diabetes Prevention Program."

High levels of physical activity can prevent and even cure obesity. "The National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) provides further evidence that weight loss maintainers are characterized by high levels of physical activity. The NWCR was established in 1993 to investigate the characteristics of individuals who have succeeded at losing at least 30 lb (13.6 kg) and keeping it off at least one year. Currently there are over 5000 individuals in the registry. These members far exceed the minimum eligibility criteria; on average they have lost almost 70 lb (32 kg) and kept it off almost six years. Analyses of approximately 3000 registry participants indicate that the average participant reports 2691 kcal/week (7) in physical activity. Men report higher levels of activity than women (2903 vs. 2532 kcal/week), but the average level corresponds very well with current activity recommendations for weight loss maintenance. However, it should be noted that there is marked variability among NWCR participants; 25% report expending <1000 kcal per week in physical activity, whereas 35% report over 3500 kcal per week."

But the environment has a lot to do with the tendency toward obesity. Says the author, "There is consistent evidence that adults who live in walkable communities walk and cycle more for transportation, and have higher levels of total physical activity, than those who live in low-walkable suburban areas (3). Differences between neighborhood types of 30 to 60 min per week of physical activity have been documented with both self-reports and objective measures such as accelerometers (4). The evidence was sufficient for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Guide to Community Preventive Services to classify community-scale land-use changes as effective physical activity interventions (4). Cervero and Kockelman (5) introduced the "3 D" principles of designing communities that support active transportation: residential density, land-use diversity, and pedestrian-oriented designs."

What about clinical evaluation of the overweight patient? Here's what we learn from the book. "The basic components involved in the evaluation of any overweight or obese patient are a medical examination and a laboratory assessment. These should include a record of the historical events associated with the patient's weight problem, a physical examination for pertinent information, and appropriate laboratory evaluation. I will use the criteria recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (1) and also take into account the reports from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NLHBI) (2) and the World Health Organization (3). The importance of evaluating overweight individuals has increased as the epidemic of overweight has worsened and the number of potential patients needing treatment has increased."

Product Description

Thomas Edison, one of the world's greatest inventors, is introduced in this fascinating activity book. Children will learn how Edison ushered in an astounding age of invention with his unique way of looking at things and refusal to be satisfied with only one solution to a problem. This book helps inspire kids to be inventors and scientists, as well as persevere with their own ideas. Activities allow children to try Edison's experiments themselves, with activities such as making a puppet dance using static electricity, manufacturing a switch for electric current, constructing a telegraph machine, manipulating sound waves, building an electrical circuit to test for conductors and insulators, making a zoetrope, and testing a dandelion for latex. In addition to his inventions and experiments, the book explores Edison's life outside of science, including his relationship with inventor Nikola Tesla, his rivalry with George Westinghouse, and his friendship with Henry Ford. A time line, glossary, and lists of supply sources, places to visit, and websites for further exploration complement this activity book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thomsa Edison for Kids:His Life and Ideas, 21 Activities
The book may indicate it's for kids but adults can certainly learn something from the material in this wonderful jam-packed informative reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thomas Edison rocks
I bought this book for my 4th grader. He loves reading it. It has a lot of fun facts about Edison's life and creations. Easy to read and keeps their attention. Our whole family enjoyed this book. Very child friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for science-minded kids (and their parents!)
Laurie Carlson has done it again!Well known for her history, science and activity books for kids, Carlson has now applied her significant energies to creating a resource for parents, teachers and children to learn more about Thomas Edison's life, times and inventions in an engaging, hands-on manner.

Like her entire catalog of kids' educational activity books, Thomas Edison for Kids provides ample context for the experiments and projects so that children may gain a full understanding of what it is that they're doing and why.Along the way, discussions of Edison's methods, perserverance, constant pursuit of knowledge model an enthusiasm for general scientific discovery not often seen by the young (or any of us, really).Additional historical context is provided by abundant archival photos and examinations of Edison's relationships with his peers, friends and rivals of the time - Tesla and Ford among them.

The activities cover a range of interests and abilities, from constructing an eletrical circuit to testing botanicals.Adults will want to read the directions thoroughly before sitting down with impatient little ones - diagrams for experiments are rather basic for those of us somewhat removed from our science class years. That said, they are usually easy to set-up and generally don't require too much in the way of specialized equipment.

One of the best features of the book is a comprehensive resource list of ideas for field trips and outings, websites, and sources for supplies needed for activities.Along with the time line and glossary they will help parents and teachers satisfy the curiosity about Edison that this book raises in their little scientists. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Way too lengthy for the concepts it is trying to teach.
I was a bit hesitant about this book, however I thought it had enough positives to it to after considering cost.I opened it up and was very disappointed to see lengthy instructions and explanations.I just wanted something quick, easy and simple, not something that was difficult and lengthy. If you want an in depth activity book under a few headings, instead of many different types of activities, then this may be the book for you.If you need a quick icebreaker or experiential activity, then pass on this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good ideas
This book has some good activities. It is always tough to find activities that suit teens.... It is well laid out and very clear. ... Read more

Product Description
In describing the intensity of political life in ancient Pompeii, Cicero remarks, "at Pompeii it's difficult" (Pompeis difficile est). Drawing on thousands of fragmentary writings--campaign posters, graffiti, inscriptions, and business receipts--recovered in the excavations of lava- and mud-covered Pompeii, James L. Franklin assembles evidence from the eras of emperors Augustus through Vespasian to prove the validity of Cicero's statement.
By collecting, sifting, and cross-referencing these varied documents, Franklin proves it possible to trace the major political alliances of the times, explore the remains of their houses, and find traces of their personalities. A few families, like the powerful Holconii, developers of the region's most famous grape vine, prove to have been steady players throughout Pompeii's history; but most families rose and fell within two generations at most. Chapters examine the men and families most prominent in each imperial period, including an analysis of their houses, and concludes with family trees. The documents themselves, elsewhere difficult to access, are prominently featured and translated in the text, making these discussions available and vivid to all readers.
This book is the first such attempt to cross-reference and animate all kinds of writing found at this legendary site. Outside of the city of Rome itself, this is the largest collection of writing from Roman antiquity, and it has lain mostly unexamined in the course of three centuries of excavations at Pompeii. This volume will interest not only students of Pompeii and classical scholars, but also historians, political scientists, sociologists, and enthusiasts of human behavior of all eras.
James L. Franklin is Professor of Classical Studies, Indiana University.
