Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Sirte Basin is a late Mesozoic and Tertiary triple junction continental rift (extensional basin) along northern Africa that was initiated during the late Jurassic Period. It borders a relatively stable Paleozoic craton and cratonic sag basins along its southern margins. The province extends offshore into the Mediterranean Sea, with the northern boundary drawn at the 2,000 meter (m) bathymetric contour. It is bordered on the north by the Gulf of Sidra. The Sirte Basin ranks 13th among the worlds petroleum provinces, having proven oil reserves estimated at 43.1 billion barrels (6.85 m) of oil equivalent (36.7 bbl, 37.7 tcf of gas, 0.1 bbl of NGL), an amount that constitutes 1.7% of the worlds known oil reserves. The basin consists of one dominant total petroleum system, known as the Sirte-Zelten. The Late Cretaceous Sirte Shale is the primary hydrocarbon source bed. Reservoirs range in rock type and age from fractured Precambrian basement, clastic reservoirs in the Cambrian-Ordovician Gargaf sandstones, and Lower Cretaceous Nubian Sandstone to Paleocene Zelten Formation and Eocene carbonates usually in the form of bioherms. Hydrocarbon generation commenced about 50 million years ago (Ma) in the deeper basins, about 40 Ma in many other areas, and may continue to the present day. Geothermal gradients generally range from to ; horsts and grabens generally have roughly equivalent thermal regimes relative to the primary source rock. Along the southwest and west margins of the province are extrusive igneous deposits that tend to diminish the hydrocarbon potential of these areas. The Gialo High is a relatively small horst block in the eastern Sirte Basin. It is most important and primarily kno...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=13227197 ... Read more

From the author: Walled cities are under pressure from modernization in many parts of the world. African walled cities such as Tripoli are deteriorating rapidly as a result. Historic, aesthetic, economic, social and other values are being lost as well as opportunities for tourism and related enterprises. The Madina of Tripoli has suffered as a result of the departure of the wealthy, the decline of the local economy, the presence of low income inhabitants, the disrepair of heritage buildings and other factors. The strategic actions needed to improve conservation and use of the walled city include: the development of a culture dependent rather than a selective conservation approach; improved organization and coordination among responsible agencies and the people; and, broader spatial and regional planning. Specific needs include education and training; efforts by government and private groups to secure more socio-economic benefits from crafts, tourism and related activities; and, economic incentives for appropriate uses and conservation, for example favourable tax policies, loans and grants.

Product Description

In 1949 more than 35,000 Jews lived in Libya, but close to ninety percent had left before Libya attained its independence in 1952. Jewish Life in Muslim Libya combines historical and anthropological perspectives in depicting the changing relations between Muslims and Jews in Libya from the early nineteenth century up to the middle of the twentieth century.

Harvey E. Goldberg shows that the cultural and religious worlds of the Jewish and Muslim communities in Libya were deeply intertwined in daily life and largely remained so despite political and social changes under successive Ottoman and Italian rule. He documents the intricate symbolic linkages of Jews and Muslims in different periods and in a variety of settings. His accounts of traditional Jewish weddings, of mock fights between Jewish teams that took place in early nineteenth-century Tripoli, and of the profession of street peddling demonstrate that, despite age-old images of Jews as outsiders or infidels, Jews were also an essential and familiar part of the local Islamic society.

Goldberg's narrative continues through the British Military Administration in Libya, a period which saw growing Libyan nationalism and, in 1945, three days of riots in which more than 130 Jews were killed. Goldberg reflects on how these events both expressed and exacerbated a rupture in the social fabric linking Muslims and Jews, setting the scene for the mass emigration of Libyan Jews from their homeland.

Product Description
South from Barbary is Justin Marozzi’s compelling account of his epic 1,500–mile journey by camel across the Libyan Sahara, retracing the old slave trade routes from the coast of North Africa to the fabled oasis of Kufra. Marozzi traces the country’s turbulent past in a dazzling blend of travel writing and history, evoking the poetry and solitude of the desert, the misery of the slave trade, the plight of a benighted nation, and the humor and generosity of its people. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best beginning of any book...
Justin Marozzi's introduction is undoubtedly the best introduction of any book I have ever read. Most introductions just give a tepid overview of the book, but Mr. Marozzi's introduction is an exciting, lucid, and extremely frank story just by itself!Very enjoyable...and refreshing!

5-0 out of 5 stars a remarkable tale of a disappearing world
This book is an account of the author's remarkable two month-long trek, via camel, across the old slave routes of the Sahara. The problem is that the very vastness of the desert, which makes it romantic, arduous, and forbidding, also makes it difficult to translate into prose. As a result there is a certain sameness to the ramshackle procession of now dilapidated desert towns though which the Marozzi and his companion travel - the dramatic highpoints, like the hovels, are few and far between, such as when one of the camels falls into a trench and nearly dies. With little social interest material to work with, Marozzi contrasts his own experiences with the diaries and travelogues of mostly 19th century explorers and abolitionists. The result is interesting, but more understated and less obviously accessible than say the books of Redmond O'Hanlon. Nevertheless, it is quite a tale, and it is apparent that with the dying out of the camel culture embodied by one of their guides, the 76 year old Tubbu nomad, Mohammed Othman, the depiction of an experience that will soon be impossible to relive, if it is even now. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Uan Muhuggiag is a place in the central Sahara located in Libya, and the name of the mummy of a small boy found there in 1958 by Professor Fabrizio Mori. The mummy displays a highly sophisticated mummification technique, and at around 5,500 years old is older than any comparable Ancient Egyptian mummy. The African culture that produced the mummy were cattle herders, and occupied much of North Africa, at a time when the Sahara was a savannah. (A change in the Earth's axis subsequently led to the climatic changes which created the modern Sahara desert.) Other links with later Egyptian culture have also been found, including the representation in rock art of dog-headed human figures (resembling Anubis), and a type of pottery decoration later found in the southern Nile valley. ... The oasis is the second centre after Ghat for Kel Ajjer Tuareg. Neighbouring villages include Germa, and In Garran. Oases also provide habitat for animals and even humans if the area is big enough. The location of oases has been of critical importance for trade and transportation routes in desert areas. Caravans must travel via oases so that supplies of water and food can be replenished. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Benghazi or Bengasi is the second largest city in Libya and the main city (or capital) of the Cyrenaica region (or ex-Province). The wider metropolitan area (which includes the southern towns of Gimeenis and Suluq) is also a district of Libya. During the Kingdom era of Libya's history, Benghazi enjoyed a sort of joint-capital status (alongside Tripoli), possibly because the King used to reside in the nearby city of Al Bayda' and the Senussis (royal family) in general were associated with Cyrenaica rather than Tripolitania. Benghazi continues to hold institutions and organizations normally associated with a national capital city. This creates a constant atmosphere of rivalry and sensitivities between Benghazi and Tripoli and by extension between the two regions (Cyrenaica and Tripolitania). The population of the entire district was 500,120 in 1995 (census) and has increased to 670,797 in the 2006 census. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Arab Renaissance (Al-Nahda) of the late 19th and early 20th centuries did not reach Libya as early as other Arab lands, and Libyans contributed little to its initial development. However, Libya at this time developed its own literary tradition, centred on oral poetry, much of which expressed the suffering brought about by the Italian colonial period. Libyan literature began to bloom in the late 1960s, with the writings of Sadeq al-Neihum, Khalifa al-Fakhri, Khamel al-Maghur (prose), Muhammad al-Shaltami and Ali al-Regeie (poetry). Many Libyan writers of the 1960s adhered to nationalist, socialist and generally progressive views. In 1969, a military coup brought Muammar al-Gaddafi to power. In the mid-1970s, the new government set up a single publishing house, and authors were required to write in support of the authorities. ... Read more
