5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
I am a teacher on a reservation and purchased this book for two reasons; 1) to use in our Native American Month unit, and 2) to introduce the kids to traditions and activities of other tribes in our state as well as in our country. The book worked well for these purposes, but will be a much better resource to me next year as I will have a lot more time to really prepare and use them to their greatest advantage! ... Product Description
Healthy families need twelve basic skills to prevent or to stop common family problems. The author developed these games to help parents and children have fun while learning to deal with negative family behavior. The problems fall away as the old habits of interaction are changed through the games. Children learn to get along by practicing common situations within their families. When they grow up to be parents, they use what they learned in their family of origin. In this way, new, more effective skills can be passed on to the next generation. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Some cute ideas
This book suggests 50 activities for parents to teach children to feel safe & relaxed, respect boundaries, make requests, listen, take no for an answer, follow directions, acknowledge others, plan, make/keep agreements, cooperate, solve problems, and resolve conflict. Some of the games are original and useful, but many require two adults and various materials. Also, if you're a counselor buying this book, keep in mind that you'll probably have to tweak the activity to make it age-appropriate. And don't expect these activities to use up very much time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun ways to build developmental skills
On the recommendation of our attachment therapist, I bought this book of games to use with my 11-year-old adopted daughter with reactive attachment disorder. The book focuses on 12 skills learned between the ages of 2 - 12 years and each set of skill building games builds on the previous skill.

I was surprised at how much I learned simply from reading the introduction and the section introductions. We are still playing games in the first couple of sections, but they have been a BIG hit.My daughter has really enjoyed the games and asked to play them again. She has begun to use some of the skills too. They have been easy to integrate into daily life.

Two things to note: 1) You will need to figure out where your kids are developmentally (not age) and where there are gaps in their skills. The book gives some ideas to help you figure it out.2) A lot of the games work better with a family of at least three or four (I'm a single parent of one), so I am either adapting them or inviting others to play with us.

The skills and sections:
1. Feeling safe and relaxed, trusting
2. Respecting boundaries
3. Making requests
4. Listening
5. Taking no for and answer
6. Following directions
7. Acknowledging others
8. Planning
9. Making and keeping agreements
10. Cooperating
11. Solving problems
12. Resolving conflicts

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for my older children or elementary age
I bought this hoping to use it at home with my third grader, and then thinking I could take it to school to use with some of the elementary students I work with as a school counselor.I was disappointed in the description not matching my needs/expectations.I feel it is for families or preschools to use with preschool age children. The games would fall flat with my family and a lot of the kids I work with for being too young/immature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers a unique and effective approach
Taking "No" For An Answer And Other Skills Children Need isn't an ordinary "how to" book on parenting offering strategies for parental problem solving with their children. Rather it offers a unique and effective approach that doesn't require parents to wait until a problem presents itself to initiate an effective parental response. Taking "No" For An Answer And Other Skills Children Need is a highly recommended addition to personal, professional, and community library parental skills development reading lists and reference book collections.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not A Game In Sight
This book has explanations of how math works but does not contain MATH GAMES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL. It has sections titled "Math Camp" that give example questions for the concepts discussed earlier in the chapter. No middle schooler I have ever taught (in over 25 years of classroom experience) would consider doing word problems a 'game'. Practicing math facts and skills needs to be motivating for all students but for middle school students in particular it is a challenge to find a game that they want to play that also teaches them. The Math Camp format is not that. The title of this book is misleading. If you are looking for practice questions and techniques for teaching specific skills, it would be moderately helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book should be called Math No-Games
There is not one game in the whole book, just a "how to do math" book. Not at all what the title says!

1-0 out of 5 stars A disservice to Mario Salvadori
I knew the late Mario Salvadori and have been a fan of his work. This is obviously a hack job with some of his ideas, then his name slapped on the cover to make it saleable. This book is a train wreck: old problems, no math games to speak of, and it reads like an abbreviated middle school textbook. This is a terrible book and an insult to Mr. Salvadori's memory.

If you want a genuine math book for middle schoolers, look to Harold Jacobs' Mathematics: A Human Endeavor, which after 40 years is still the best general interest math book with humor and insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math's Little Book of Why
After reading some of the reviews on this book, I just had to respond with a review of my own.
This book reminds me a bit of "The Big Book of Tell Me Why" that children (and adults)love to read. I am a home schooling mom, not a math teacher. I am home schooling an accelerated second grader. For our "normal" math class work, we are use Singapore Math and the "Key To" series. For math enrichment, we are reading "Math on Call", A Mathematics Handbook and this one, "Math Games for Middle School". I find this book to be just what we need for answering my son's "why questions"."Where do numbers come from?""Why do we use base 10.""Do other people use another base?""Why do computers use base 2?""What is base 2?" As a home schooling mom, I love this book for its deep, yet managemable explanations to these questions.Terms are also defined. For example:base, exponent, decimal, decimal dot...both in terms and in examples. We are only on the first chapter (though I have browsed the first several) and my son only grasps some of the layers of the onion, but we are both enjoying the book. Our country relies too much on formulas and not enough on understanding. This book would bring joy to a class as an opening warm up to get them thinking. I wish we had more educators like the author of this book that excited his students to the joy of mathematics and not just to rote learning of rulesthat seemingly "dropped on us from the sky."The author taught on the faculties of Columbia university for 50 years and Princeton for 5 years. His earliest work was 8 years in his native city on the faculty of the University of Rome.Ph.D. in mathematics and in civil engineering. He has a center (I am not sure if it still exists as he died in 1997 at age 90) called the Salvadori Center that is dedicated to improving teaching in middle schools with emphasis on math and science. His words, "I have dedicated the last years of my life entirely to teaching the young, from kindergartners through high schoolers." Great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Math Games for Middle School
I teach middle school mathematics and I think the book is great to aid in cooperative learning groups.Using the information and developing work stations will enhance the students' knowledge of the material. As a lesson, the book would require the creativity of the teacher to add other material and/or adjustments to make it interesting. This book is best for reteaching or review of the topics being taught. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gram learns chess from 7 y/o grandson
I read the entire book before giving to our grandson, who plays chest with his daddy.I learned so much about moves and the identification of each piece. Our grandson loved it also.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chess for my students
This was a great books for my 1st grade students. Given I've already taught them all the values, moves, and how to win a game the book did get a little more in depth. Fun pictures and short explanations help a lot when explaining strengths of pieces and things. It did go over all the chess basics but could have given more examples and maybe a puzzle here or there to help w/ training.

3-0 out of 5 stars Short introduction to chess
"Starting Chess" is written at about a high school reading level and designed to give you a quick introduction to how the pieces move, elementary rules and a little bit of strategy to get you started.
The order of presentation is not the best in my opinion. I personally liked "Learn Chess: A complete course" a lot more for organization and the completness of the material necessary to make a beginner into a decent player. Even the junior chess guide for the beginner is far more complete. If you just want to learn how the pieces move and the very, very basics, then "Starting Chess" is satisfactory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic Rules with Basic Strategy
This is a rather colorfull book that is aimed at introducing chess to the young beginner who has no knowledge of chess whatsoever. Beyond the rules, it provides very elementary strategy. For a player say ages 8 to 12 who doesn't plan on going much beyond just learning very elementary basics STARTING CHESS is suitable. The under 8 year old should consider getting YOU CAN PLAY CHESS to cover how the pieces move and basic rules (designed as a coloring book, it is very unique).

4-0 out of 5 stars The Basics of Chess in Color
This is a colorful chess book with nice grapics and pictures. It teaches you the rules and some strategical things in chess. It is good for readers from about 9 to 12. Under age 9 I recommend "You can play chess" to learn piece movements. ... Read more
