4-0 out of 5 stars Jefferson--Hemings
An excellent counterweight to the usual deification of Jefferson but factually incorrect when she says (p.72) "DNA testing in 1998 proved that Jefferson had indeed fathered at least one of Heming's children."

The testing proved only that "a" Jefferson did so as the authors of the study have labored to make clear. There are other more likely candidates.

4-0 out of 5 stars Skulduggery in the West
I enjoyed "Seduced by the West," though it's a quick read that is more of a lengthy magazine article than really a book.

The books focuses on various efforts to explore and claim the American West including, but not limited to, Lewis & Clark.

The most interesting aspect of the book is the description of various characters, e.g., General James Wilkinson.Wilkinson was supposed to be representing US interests in the ill-defined Louisiana Territories, but he was also apparently being paid by the Spanish. The Spanish, intriguingly, didn't recognize the Louisiana Purchase as their deal to turn Louisiana over to the French had a codicil that it wasn't to be sold to someone else.

I would have preferred the book if it had been more specifically focused on a character like Wilkinson and therefore would have been less of a historical review.

But, within the context of what "Seduced by the West" is, it's an enjoyable read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Too Good
This is not as good a work as it had the potential of being. At 199 pages it is short, made shorter still by small pages with large type.

Bouncing from topic to topic, it is an uncoordinated effort. It appears to have been rushed. There are so many ibids and multiple referrals to the same source material in the bibliography that you begin to wonder just how much work went into the research behind it. I was sorry I purchased it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Do Them No Harm
Few books have been written that tell about the Native American's side of history. This book tells about the Nez Perce stories of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in Idaho. Zoa Swayne spent decades interviewing tribal elders and studying the journals before putting this book together.Clark met 3 Nez Perce boys on the Weippe Prairie, Zoa discovered the names of 2 of the boys. Lewis and Clark spent 2 1/2 weeks in the Nez Perce country building canoes before continuing on to the Pacific Ocean and nearly 2 months on the return trip, so there is a lot to tell.

4-0 out of 5 stars The world as Indians saw it
Ms. Swayne has done an excellent job of telling the story of one indian tribe's encounters with American explorers. Not really a portrayal of Lewis and Clark themselves, it is more a glimpse into what the world looked liketo the Nez Perce 200 years ago. It's told from the Indians' point of view, based on oral and written history collected after much research by MsSwayne. Each stage of the unfolding story is contrasted with entries fromLewis's and Clarke's journals. The different views of the same developmentsprovides real insight into the different world views and problems faced bythe Indians and the explorers.

It's a fairly short book written in thestyle of a novel, and is a good relaxing read for adults or teenagers. ... Read more

Product Description

Volume 8 of this prize-winning new edition continues the return of the expeditionary party, from their base at Camp Chopunnish on the Clearwater River in present Idaho back to St. Louis. At the outset, they are hindered by deep snow; but after returning to obtain help from Nez Perce guides they make rapid progress, so much so that at their Travelers’ Rest Camp near the site of today’s Missoula, Montana, the captains divide the party for separate explorations. Lewis heads east to the Missouri River, then north along the Marias to examine the northern extent of the Louisiana Purchase; Clark goes southeast toward the Yellowstone to explore that river and to make contact with local Indians. Lewis’s party suffers various forms of ill luck—grizzlies, horse thieves, and a violent encounter with a party of Piegan Blackfeet (the only trouble of this kind on the expedition)—and Lewis is wounded by one of his own men in a hunting accident.

Clark’s group has its own troubles, although not as severe as those of Lewis and his men. The two parties eventually reunite on August 12 in present North Dakota and continue downriver. They revisit Indian tribes—Mandans, Hidatsas, Arikaras, and Yankton Sioux—they had met on the way out, and encounter traders and trappers going upriver. They arrive back in St. Louis to a triumphal welcome on September 23.

Product Description
Dr. Elaine McIntosh’s book provides an extensive analysis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition from the standpoint of food, nutrition, and health within the context of current dietary knowledge. It is, in fact, the first study of these three factors as integrated aspects and their impact on the expedition.

Included are a discussion of the status of medicine during the late Colonial and new Republic periods, the various advantages accruing to the expedition party from wintering at Camp Dubois prior to departure up the Missouri, their inability to tolerate the camas root at Weippe Prairie, fluctuations in game availability, the epidemic of contagious diseases while at Fort Clatsop, and a comprehensive health-related analysis of the Corps of Discovery based on available vital statistics and other information about the men. ... This well-documented historical account provides background to the forerunners of Lewis and Clark, highlighting the role of earlier French-Canadian explorers and fur traders. It re-creates the world of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, chronicling the relationship between Lewis and Clark and their French-Canadian guides, recounting the crucial hospitality of the Native American people they encountered, and showing how, without both groups, the expedition would not have succeeded. The French-Canadian guide Toussaint Charbonneau is introduced, along with his young Shoshone wife, the legendary Sacagawea, who endeared herself to Clark for her determination and helpfulness. Detailed archival maps, photographs, paintings, and a complete bibliography are included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice human angle
This book gave me an appreciation for the personalities of the key players in the expedition. For instance, we learn that Sacagawea "wept profusely" when she met her brother, and showed grit and courage after a boat wreck while the men on board panicked.I think the human side is what makes history engaging and interesting--better than dry facts.I appreciated quotes from the journals of Lewis and Clark.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice questions but personalities rather than discoveries
A nice little book for the student who asks questions, by identifying unanswered ones for investigating. There is, however, an emphasis on personalities rather than the events and discoveries.A map of the expedition, sites and dates would have been helpful too. ... Read more
