The Global Report on Human Settlements is the most authoritative and up-to-date assessment of conditions and trends in the world's cities. It is an essential tool and reference for researchers, academics, public authorities and civil society organizations around the world.

The 2007 Global Report is devoted to three major dimensions of urban safety and security: crime and violence; security of tenure and protection against forced eviction; and natural and human-made disasters. The report focuses on appropriate urban planning and management methods designed to: (i) reduce the incidence and impacts of crime and violence; (ii) reduce the incidence and consequences of tenure insecurity (including forced evictions), with respect to both shelter and informal sector enterprises; and (iii) mitigate the impacts of disasters (both natural and human-made). The volume is essential reading for all professionals and researchers in the relevant fields and a valuable resource for teachers and students of urban development. ... Read more

Product Description
Pumping life, the teenagers in this novel jump off the page. From the intelligent but physically abused Gray Morrow, to his heroic but temperamental older brother, Gordon, and his tragic relationship with the city-wise but sexually abused Dusty Jones, this is a world many of us fail to recognise as very much our own.

Often dark and sometimes cold, bloody and brutal, it is also filled with pathos, love and humanity.

"As If! is racy, with a pace reminiscent of an early Henry Miller, getting you involved in its poetically drawn world, and then lulling you into a sense of complacency, when WHAM, it hits you that this is no ordinary novel, something to be evidenced in both the content and style of writing as much as the universal themes of love, loss and need that are so brilliantly portrayed through the energetically alive, complex and richly drawn characters."

- Dr Robert Schweitzer, Associate Professor in Psychology, Queensland University of Technology

This is one book that I would not recommend to anyone. The author had so many character and so much detail that I could not even get past page 55.All the characters in the book seem to have nothing to do with each otherand it got to the point that I did not even want to try to read the bookanymore.

The FBIs Most Wanted is a graphic book explaining in detail how some crimes were committed which is written by Laura DAngelo about the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), how it was started by Edgar J. Hoover, and how the top ten most wanted list was started in the fifties in part by an news reporter. There are also many short stories on some of the popular or more known criminal in the last half century that have made the top ten most wanted list. You should not buy this book unless you are really in to the FBI. If you dont believe me and still are considering buying this book dont borrow it from a library or a friend because youll be wasting your money. When reading The FBIs Most Wanted you can expect to be bored with many stupid facts and the only thing I found interesting was how the top ten list was started. It was started partially by a news reporter asking the director who the top ten most dangerous people in the country were? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless! Do not waste your money!
Most of the people joining the forensic field already have a substantial background in biology/chemistry. The 2/3 of the book is a lame attempt to explain the basics of genetics. If you ever have had genetic course, you will skip the first 2/3. If your major is in art or business, you still need to read something more substantial about genetic inheritance. The only part of the book going in the depth of Forensic DNA analysis is a chapter about paternity testing, but... The author of that chapter could not adequately explain how to calculate the probability of inheritance of a genetic locus/marker from alleged father for Paternity Index calculation. The "explanation" in that chapter clearly shows that author DOSE NOT UNDERSTAND the Paternity Index calculation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The issues on both sides of the Capital Punishment debate
As of 2000 there were Federal laws providing for the death penalty for murder related to the smuggling of aliens; destruction of aircraft, motor vehicles, or related facilities resulting in death; murder committed during a drug-related drive-by shooting; murder committed at an airport serving international civil aviation; retaliatory murder of a member of the immediate family of law enforcement officials; civil rights offenses resulting in death; murder of a member of Congress, an important executive official, or a Supreme Court Justice; espionage; death resulting form offenses involving transportation of explosives, destruction of government property, or destruction of property related to foreign or interstate commerce; murder committed by the use of a firearm during a crime of violence of a drug-trafficking crime; murder committed in a Federal Government facility; genocide; first-degree murder; murder of a federal judge or law enforcement official; murder of a foreign official; murder by a Federal prisoner; murder of a U.S. national in a foreign country; murder by an escaped Federal prisoner already sentenced to life imprisonment; murder of a State or local law enforcement official or other person aiding in a Federal investigation; murder of a State correctional officer; murder during a kidnapping; murder during a hostage taking; murder of a court officer or juror; murder with the intent of preventing testimony by a witness, victim, or informant; retaliatory murder of a witness, victim, or informant; mailing of injurious articles with intent to kill or resulting in death; assassination or kidnapping resulting in the death of the President or Vice President; murder for hire; murder involved in a racketeering offense; willful wrecking of a train resulting in death; back-robbery-related murder or kidnapping; murder related to a carjacking; murder related to rape or child molestation; murder related to sexual exploitation of children; murder committed during an offense against maritime navigation; murder committed during an offense against a maritime fixed platform; terrorist murder of a U.S. national in another country; murder by the use of a weapon of mass destruction; murder involving torture; treason; murder related to a continuing criminal enterprise or related murder of a Federal, State, or local law enforcement officer; and death resulting from aircraft hijacking.

This Point/Counterpoint volume on "Capital Punishment" provides a general introduction to the political and legal issues surrounding capital punishment (and there is even a warning that "It is not intended as legal advice").Alan Marzilli notes in his Introduction that the controversy over capital punishment has divided courts and been the center of political elections, including presidential elections. The continued use of capital punishment in the United States (38 states have capital offenses) sets it apart from other Western democracies, but even though that puts the nation in league with some of the world's most oppressive regimes, a majority of Americans support capital punishment.Marzilli looks at not only the relevant legal and sociological questions regarding this debate, but the moral and religious issues as well. After defining "capital punishment," the book offers three sets of Point/Counterpoint Arguments: First, whether the death penalty is an effective deterrent to crime.Second, whether streamlining capital punishment would make it more effective or if it is already too easy to convict and execute people.Third, whether capital punishment is a just process or is applied unfairly. The final chapter considers the future of capital punishment in America, looking at some possible changes to the death penalty in the United States and comparing our system to those of the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia where each has a low crime rate despite totally opposite positions on capital punishment. The book is sparsely illustrated but has informative charts throughout (e.g., methods of execution by state, time under sentence of death and execution by race). There are also sidebars with excerpts specific court rulings, such as Gregg v. Georgia and Payne v. Tennessee, including dissenting opinions (e.g., McCleskey v. Kemp). The back of the book contains additional resource for not only general background but specifically for each side of the debate, and a list of appropriate legislation and case law.Marzilli also includes an appendix that explains the basic principles of legal research and the common citation forms for various cases and statutes.

As a former debater and debate coach I can appreciate the way Marzilli gives both sides solid ammunition to use on all three of the specific Point/Counterpoint issues in this book.Marzilli specifically emphasizes the importance of knowing both sides of a debate in order to make a skillful argument. This also underscores the idea that this is not a black and white issue, because there are valid arguments on both sides. On the one hand there are some crimes, such as the abuse and murder of children, where our outrage and anger makes us wish that the Constitution did not prohibit cruel and unusual punishment. But on the other hand we understand why the governor of Illinois would declare a moratorium on executions when the state has freed more inmates from death row because they were found to be innocent than they had put to death.I remember hearing once that it cost over a $1 million to execute someone in the United States, given all the current appellate system, and I cannot help thinking that money could be used to hire more police officers or be spent on other things that would reduce the number of murders committed in this country. So there are many more aspects of this subject to explore, but Marzilli provides a solid introduction from which young students can proceed. ... Product Description
The novel Mind Games is the sequel to Momma, Please Forgive Me!Mind Games is a mystery thriller that focuses on how the victim is troubled with hurt and pain because of an abusive past. After spending over 10 years in prison for the murder of her abusive husband, La Vonne Brown goes through several changes trying to figure out if her husband, Jonathan Brown is really dead.Throughout the story, La Vonne will see him, or think she’s seeing him as she tries to live her life and build a solid foundation with her children, whom her mother has raised while she was locked up.

As in the novel; ‘Momma, Please Forgive Me!’ Mind Games deals with the sensitive subject of domestic violence. It focuses on how the victim is troubled with hurt and pain because of this abuse, along with how the entire family suffers as well.I know of this hurt and pain very well, because I grew up in a family that suffered from domestic violence by the hands of my step-father.However, I made the necessary changes to put an end to it in my family, while continuing to live a happy and healthy life with my husband of eighteen years.

Mind Games explores the after effects of how a woman, who has been separated from her family for over ten years, comes back into society and tries to live a normal and happy life. However, there are many twists and turns in this story as she tries to be the perfect mother to her now teenage children. This story explores the daily lives of how La Vonne’s children treat her and how their classmates treat them after finding out the hidden truth of what their mother did and why she hasn’t been a part of their lives for so long.

This book will send readers on a thrill ride as they too try to figure out if Jonathan is in fact dead, or just playing tricks with their minds. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The mind does play tricks.
In her sequel to Mama, Please Forgive Me, Toi Moore delves into the repercussions from domestic abuse and it's affect on the family.MIND GAMES takes up as La Vonne Brown has just finished her ten-year prison sentence for killing her husband, Jonathan. Her children, who've been living with their grandmother all this time, are now teenagers with lives of their own.As La Vonne struggles to rebuild her life, reconnect with her children and deal with her guilt, her mind begins to play games on her.She starts to see a man resembling her dead husband. These visions begin to wreak havoc in her life as she convinces herself that a conspiracy is in order and now her husband is out to kill her. But, is this really the case?

The fallout from living in an abusive relationship can be devastating on a family, especially if there are children involved. Ms. Moore gives a fascinating and suspenseful account of the aftermath of domestic violence and I was sucked in right up until the ending. However, the ending took an unbelievable twist that left me wondering if my mind was playing tricks on me.Although I never dreamed it would end in such a fashion, I would still recommend this novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Mind Game Indeed!
Mind Games is the sequel to Momma Please Forgive Me.
The story opens with La Vonne returning home from spending ten years in prison for killing her husband Jonathan. La Vonne tries to reconnect with her children who are now teenagers and get her life back in order but she suffers from dreams that flash the past pieces of her life before her. She keeps seeing a man in the distance who resembles Jonathan wearing a dark trench coat and fedora and she finds roses that cross her path causing her to wonder if she is going crazy or if Jonathan is somehow alive and not dead at all. La Vonne starts dating her attorney, finds a job and finds her place back in her children's lives. She finds love but nothing is what it seems. Toi Moore has woven a novel where the effects of Domestic Violence are real. This story was vivid and suspenseful making you wonder if Jonathan is still alive and if so is he going to kill her? or is he a spirit trying to reach her. This was a deep look at one woman's survival from abuse, what it did to her family and how they stayed strong. Then there is the end that takes a wild turn but personally i found the end to be a bit unrealistic from such a vivid story that held me all the way. I would have liked a more suspenseful end or more of a closure than the twist that ends the story. This was a good read. It kept me turning the pages. Toi has gained great depth with this novel. An engaging read i recommend. ... Read more
