Product Description
To make the course preparatory to Caesar at the same time systematic,
thorough, clear, and interesting is the purpose of this series of
lessons.

The first pages are devoted to a brief discussion of the Latin language,
its history, and its educational value. The body of the book, consisting
of seventy-nine lessons, is divided into three parts.

Part I is devoted to pronunciation, quantity, accent, and kindred
introductory essentials.

Part II carries the work through the first sixty lessons, and is devoted
to the study of forms and vocabulary, together with some elementary
constructions, a knowledge of which is necessary for the translation of
the exercises and reading matter. The first few lessons have been made
unusually simple, to meet the wants of pupils not well grounded in
English grammar.

Part III contains nineteen lessons, and is concerned primarily with the
study of syntax and of subjunctive and irregular verb forms. The last
three of these lessons constitute a review of all the constructions
presented in the book. There is abundant easy reading matter; and,
in order to secure proper concentration of effort upon syntax and
translation, no new vocabularies are introduced, but the vocabularies
in Part II are reviewed. ... Read more

Contents good but does not cover all of the written material in the corresponding book. Would be helpful if comments on Latin pronunciation were included.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for learning pronounciation.
Excellent recording of selections of the latin text from the student textbook. Great for learning the pronunciation. I only gave 4 stars because there is neither enough time between each sentence to repeat the latin back, nor can you easily listen repeatedly to one sentence.
That said, definately a valuable resource if you need to learn the pronunciation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings Latin to life
I am learning Latin on my own.The audio CD has been extremely helpful in learning how to read Latin. The production is professionally done, with a cast of voice actors, music and dramatization which helps with comprehension.

Product Description
Designed for North American students, this special version of the Oxford Latin Course combines the best features of both modern and traditional methods of Latin teaching, providing an exciting, stimulating introduction and approach to Latin based on the reading of original texts.
In this four-volume North American edition, the order of declensions corresponds to customary U.S. usage, and the spelling has been Americanized. In addition, it offers full-color illustrations and photographs throughout Parts I and II and an expanded Teacher's Book with translations for each part. Parts I-III (now available in hardcover editions) are built around a narrative detailing the life of Horace, now based more closely on historical sources, which helps students to get to know real Romans--with their daily activities, concerns, and habits--and to develop an understanding of Roman civilization during the time of Cicero and Augustus. Part IV (paperback) is a reader consisting of extracts from Caesar, Cicero, Catullus, Virgil, Livy, and Ovid.
The second edition of the Oxford Latin Course has been carefully designed to maximize student interest, understanding, and competence. It features a clearer presentation of grammar, revised narrative passages, new background sections, more emphasis on daily life and on the role of women, a greater number and variety of exercises, and review chapters and tests. Each chapter opens with a set of cartoons with Latin captions that illustrate new grammar points. A Latin reading follows, with new vocabulary highlighted in the margins and follow-up exercises that focus on reading comprehension and grammatical analysis. A background essay in English concludes each chapter. Covering a variety of topics--from history to food, from slavery to travel, these engaging essays present a well-rounded picture of Augustan Rome.
The Oxford Latin Course, Second Edition offers today's students and teachers an exceptionally engaging and attractive introduction to the language, literature, and culture of Rome--one that builds skills effectively and is exciting to use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great series!
These four books make a great introductory course. They many not be the easiest, by any means, but they are far and away one of the best and most rewarding. While on one level it is definitely a "reading course" (i.e., it has you reading extended narrative prose from the very beginning) it really does combine the best of the modern and traditional approaches. The course develops reading skills as much as any "inductive" textbook (even one at the end of the spectrum like Cambridge Latin Course), and yet it teaches grammar explicitly and from the very beginning. Furthermore the grammar is presented in manageable amounts (though not in dribs and drabs), and authors tend to present things in a more sensible sequence than a strictly traditional textbook. Thus someone who finishes this course will have very strong reading skills and yet will have as solid an understanding of grammar and syntax as someone who has used an old-fashioned grammar-translation textbook like Wheelock.

The premise of the course, which follows the life of the Roman poet Horace, is absolutely brilliant. We know a fair amount about the personal life of Horace through his Satires and Odes, and Horace lived through (and was even an active participant in) some of the most interesting events in Roman history. Hence, the entire course breaths Roman history. Also, the Latin of the narrative passages -- almost from the very beginning -- feels like real Latin (much more so than almost any beginning Latin book), and at times can be quite lovely. Book III (the last third of course that presents basic Latin grammar and syntax) introduces extended excerpts from the poetry of Horace and Vergil. This is a bit of a stretch for the beginner, but it's well worth the effort. Someone who has completed this course, unlike most other textbook, will have had some significant contact with the grandeur of Roman literature.

The Reader (the fourth book in the series) is a bit of a stretch for beginning students. There are no long marks (though an argument can be made that this is a good time to dispense with them), and the selection of authors, on whole, is a bit tough (Caesar being by far the easiest). An easier author like Eutropius or Nepos might have been a good addition to this reader (of course, it could be supplemented with War with Hannibal: Authentic Latin Prose for the Beginning Student or Cornelius Nepos: Three Lives -- Alcibiades, Dion, Atticus, or the like). On the other hand, perhaps the students' exposure to Horace and Vergil in Book III prepares them for the tougher literature.

There is also a very good teacher's manual that gives both historical background to each chapter (remember this course is absolutely saturated with Roman history!) as well as a full answer key to the exercises and reading passages. This would make the course very user-friendly for the independent learner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful which used edition you order

this textbook is as good as it gets.unusually attractive, generously illustrated, yet at the same time highly challenging, the oxford course is a major success at textbook writing. after studying this course one gets acomprehensive view of roman history and culture, in addition to a knowledgeof the language.and the narrative about horace at the center of thiscourse reads like a novel. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A different approach to learning a new language
Oxford's "Take Off" series provides a unique and fresh approach to learning a new language and actually manages to be effective while being very reasonably priced!

Important to consider though is that this package isn't quite comprehensive enough to make you entirely fluent but for what it is (a way for traveler's to quickly develop 'survival' level language ability) you really couldn't ask for more.

Even though this set comes with a few, distinct components (4 audio cd's, 3 books and access to mp3 audio files what really stood out to me was the lesson book in particular. This one book really shatters the notion that language texts need to be droll and dry and really impresses with its easy-breezy readability and attention to detail without being overwhelming.

If you have any interest in learning or improving your Spanish you really would be hard pressed to find a more effective starting point in this price range.

5-0 out of 5 stars A huge help in transitioning between English and Spanish
I've used this set with my daughter, who is enrolled in an English/Spanish immersion program at elementary school. It has been quite helpful, not only for her, but for me. It's an excellent, attractive package that was worth every penny and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful resource
This is a well-designed, well-organized, helpful resource. I took two years of Spanish in college, and I found this book to be a very good review and refresher. I think it would be a helpful place to start for beginners or people about to take a vacation to a Spanish-speaking country. Ideally, I would recommend taking a course with an instructor and other students, or taking a vacation (or exchange) to a Spanish speaking country to really immerse oneself in the language and culture. But as far as a book goes, I think this is one of the better ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW- this is so well laid out- excellent mix of learning styles represented
As a teacher, I have learned over the years that in order to cover a subject to reach the most people, you have to present the topic in various learning styles.Having a topic covered only in book or only orally when it comes to language is not going to reach all different types of learning styles.

LATIN AMERICAN SPANISH in the OXFORD TAKE OFF IN series is an excellent program. There is a very well laid out presentation of the subject matter and many different learning styles can be reached with this series, although the visual is limited to words in the books only and not visuals as in DVDs.

WHAT COMES IN THIS SET?

This set comes with 4 lesson CDs which contain many lessons as well as review sessions. There is also a practice CD (total of 5 in the kit).

There is a lesson book, and a travel dictionary and travel book.

CD LESSONS

The CD lessons are very well laid out.First the listener is taken through a narrative introduction of various terms and pronunciations of words and phrases featured in the chapter.

Once the lesson is listened to several times, then the student progresses to written lessons which are in the lesson book.

These lessons are broken into several sections.

There are several activities which could be matching exercise using conversation featured in the chapter.

There are vocabulary lists to go over written with the Spanish first and then the English translation.

There are language building activities which feature special instructions for some things that are in the Spanish language which the student might not be aware of.Usually there are several language facts presented in each Lesson.

Once the book activities are completed, the student is directed back to the CD to listen to the remaining activities for that lesson/chapter.

TRAVEL BOOK

The travel book is laid out extremely well.It is broken up into topics of relevance. For example, if you might be looking to discuss knitting with someone in Spanish, you can look under the leisure games & pastimes category and you will find the word for knitting.

At the end of each category, there is a dialogue completely in Spanish which allows the reader to test their ability to comprehend what is being said and possibly use it in their interactions.

MP3
I have not had the chance to download the MP3 files which are available to put on an MP3 player to take with you while on the move, but it is available.

FINAL COMMENTS
I am very impressed with this language course.I have had the opportunity to experience many different language courses over the years and I have to say that this course is laid out the nicest of any that I have seen so far.It is easy to use, interesting, and covers various aspects of language without getting boring.

The books are black and white and well laid out, but there are no color photos or pictures in these books to distract from the language being learned.

I also appreciate the compactness of the set- it is easy to take with you and various methods of learning (MP3 and CD ) are made available to help with the ease of use and transport.

I am giving this 5 stars.

When I finish the course, if anything changes, I will be sure to update my review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good program at a Good price!
If you have had any Spanish, this is a good program to get. It is well organized and the CDs make it easy to practice. Some have criticized the accompanying book, but I thought it was fine--probably because I'm a visual learning and seeing the CDs in writing helped reinforce it.

I work with people who have learned English this way (much harder than Spanish) so it CAN be done. This is a good, solid program and Latin American Spanish is, I think, the best choice for people in the U.S.

I haven't used it long enough to say, "Wow! What a big improvement!" but I'll edit this when I've completed the program. So far, though, I've been impressed. ... Read more

Required for Latin course I am taking. Find the course and this book difficult to process. They claim it is laid out as you would need to use for reference in first two chapters. I find it difficult to find clarification of word form in this format.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful but could be better.
This grammar booklet is a useful addition to the CLC textbooks, but has two major flaws in my opinion: 1. Grammar wise it is very incomplete (e.g. hardly any clear info on the use of cases). I realize it is a supplement to a reading method, but I am frustrated in a similar way with the actual CLC textbook which at times provides little clarity to the students.2. The lay-out and print are rather unclear (too much text on one page).

Product Description

A Latin grammar and reader all in one when the text and workbook are used together, Learn to Read Latin presents basic Latin morphology and syntax with clear explanations and examples, and it offers direct access to great works of Latin literature even at the earliest stages of learning the language. As beginning students learn basic forms and grammar, they also gain familiarity with patterns of Latin word order and other features of style, thus becoming well prepared for later, more difficult texts.

No other beginning Latin book contains as many unaltered versions of ancient texts. Learn to Read Latin includes the writings of such authors as Caesar, Cicero, Sallust, Catullus, Vergil, and Ovid, arranged chronologically and accompanied by introductions to each author and each work. These readings serve as the chief training texts around which the book’s fifteen chapters are constructed. A workbook is also available, providing abundant drills for each chapter of the text. A flexible format allows the workbook exercises to be used in the classroom, for homework assignments, for extra individual drill work, or as a home study tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for beginning Latin
I have been using this set for my Latin 1 class at UC Berkeley for about a month now. I have not used any other Latin textbooks, but so far this one is just about the best textbook I have ever used. The material is presented in a logical order, with each new step building up on the previous, and the format of the book is conducive this. The grammatical functions and usages are explained clearly with easy to follow examples. The vocabulary notes are thorough and in the case of irregularities often give a linguistic background that is not only interesting but also gives a logical explanation for them. For example when discussing the irregular verbs sum "tobe, exist" and possum "to be able," the text explains: "The verb possum is in origin a combination of the Latin adjective potis or pote (able) and the verb sum." While this is not necessary to know to learn the information, it does aid in understanding and helps to draw connections between the two verbs.

This book also lives up to its title: from early on the emphasis is placed on acquiring the ability to read authentic classical Latin as soon as possible. Even at the end of chapter two, right after verbs were introduced, the book included two sentences from early Latin sources. One of them was this gem by Aulus Gellius in Nocts Atticae:

video barbam et pallium; philosophum nondum video. (I apologize for lack of macrons, amazon wont let me put them in.)

This translates, roughly to, "I see a beard and a cloak; a philosopher not yet I see." The integration of classical Latin sources is very exciting, particularly when they are witty phrases like this, and whet one's appetite for more.

I am very pleased with this book. It is great for students like me in introductory Latin classes, but the book is so well organized and presented that I think it would also be a good resource for those trying to teach themselves Latin. I also recommend getting a hard cover of the textbook if you can part with the extra $20. Mine seems to be much sturdier than my classmates' paperbacks, a valuable quality when the book is jostled around in my backpack while trekking around campus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.
This book is a reprint of the 1921 edition of the Elements of Latin by Benjamin D'Ooge. This book is also available online for free in PDF format through Google Books (D'Ooge also has a good grammar available through Google books).I recommend downloading it to access it on your computer or Kindle in PDF, and also buying it in book form since it's a great little book at a great price and as much as I enjoy e-books, there is still nothing like holding a tangible paper copy, which you can read with or without a computer or other device.I bought my copy through Amazon and was very pleased with the delivery time and the mint condition of the product when it arrived.

As for the book, it's an old-school Latin textbook which is still highly readable and usable even by modern students, provided they are interested in Latin and willing to put in a little effort (which is required to learn any language). The book could be used in a classroom setting, in a small group with a tutor, and would be ideal for homeschooling students as long as they have access to a tutor or parent who already knows some Latin, since there are no answers to the exercises. If you studied Latin previously and wish to brush up on it, this book provides an easy, engaging way to do that. The lack of an answer key should not be a problem for anyone with prior Latin or a solid foundation in grammar and language learning.Beginners or those with weaker language knowledge or skills would want a tutor to help them review their work.

I enjoy the stories, and this book also includes a series of longer reading passages at the end of the book, along with vocabulary lists to foster original compositions in Latin. It is well-illustrated and overall a fun book for learning or reviewing Latin!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book
I think this is the best little Latin text I've seen. It gets right to the point without all kinds of explanation and verbage. I wish I'd found it before I bought several other books.

If you haven't a clue about how languages work - what an adverb is, what syntax is - perhaps you'll want Wheelock's Latin, but, personally, my eyes glaze over trying to get through all the explanation in that book to the information I want.

This review reminds me of Joe Friday - just the facts, Ma'am, and don't beat around the bush. Just get to the good stuff, and this Super Review book does.

Congrats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Standard, comprehensive reference work
A copy of Allen and Greenough belongs on every Latin student and every Latin scholar's bookshelf, and in fact is probably already there. After more than a hundred years in print, A&G is still a reliable reference for all aspects of traditional Latin grammar, and is a more than adequate reference for everyone short of graduate-level philologists. The final sections, on prosody and metre, are somewhat dated but still provide a good foundation in the similarly dated terminology one inevitably comes across in contemporary works on poetry. This edition with the gold-coloured cover is indeed flimsy, however.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable reference work
This book is a valuable reference for Latin grammar. If you have a first-year text such as Wheelock, you will still need this book or one like it to explain the many Latin constructions you will encounter which are not explained in an introductory textbook. I used this book to help write a grammatical commentary on a letter written by Cicero, as part of a school assignment. It was easy to find the information I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Latin Grammar
For over a century, the peerless and indispensable companion for for anyone involved with Classical Latin. It passes on a tradition of profound scholarship with clarity and exactitude.A great bargain in the paperback edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
This is definitely among my favorite Latin grammar references (along with Gildersleeve's and Bennett's.As other reviewers mentioned, this is a grammar reference.Do not expect to learn Latin from this book.If you already have an understanding of Latin grammar or are merely wondering how the Latin language works, this book is an excellent choice.Allen and Greenough's New Latin Grammar will be useful to teachers, students, and former students of Latin interested in maintaining/increasing their capabilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Latin Grammar !
This perhaps the best latin grammar out there today. Everything you ever wanted to know about this complex language is here. The grammatical points are clearly explained and numerous examples help clarify these points. The book also contains several sections on syntax as well. In fact the book is half grammar and the other half is syntax. Every serious student should own a copy, it is that good !

My 5-star review is for content only. The paperback copy I have gets a 1-star, because it is in pieces. I am tired of these expensive paperbacks falling apart. This book should come in a clothbound edition. Reference works should ALWAYS be available in a hardcover or clothbound edition - because they get such heavy use ! Publishers wakeup ! ... Read more

Purchased for use in an intensive Latin course, the grammar offers very good examples of English constructions and then compares them to their Latin counterpart.Worth purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars "English Grammar for Students of Latin: The Study Guide for Those Learning Latin (English Grammar Series)"
"English Grammar for Students of Latin: The Study Guide for Those Learning Latin (English Grammar Series)" is a great quick "pocket" review for Latin. It gives the reader quick access to the essential grammar the student might need for a test or exam. It is also an inexpensive guide for review over the summer in between Latin 101 and Latin 102.

What I like about it:

Quick, easy one or two page of the grammar of Latin with the corresponding equivalent (if one exists) in English.
It includes review samples to cement the reader's understanding of those concepts.
A great book to have on had throughout your Latin career.

What I didn't like about it:

It could have more examples and samples to look at to cement one's understanding of Latin grammar.

3-0 out of 5 stars Norma Goldman's grammar book
Although I love Norma Goldman's book, this copy was supposed to be in like-new condition without writing. It arrived with many pages full of ink underlining plus notes on the sides of the pages.I contacted the distributor, who was supposed to replace it with a new copy, but they did not follow through after I agreed to remove my negative rating. They said they had a lot of people working in their building, and they don't look closely at the product they are shipping! Buy the book, but don't buy it from the people who sold it to me.

3-0 out of 5 stars English grammar improvement guaranteed
This book will help anyone understand the principles behind the English language. You do not have to be a Latin student to understand this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Struggling Latin Student Still Struggling
I didn't find this book to be extremely useful in my studies.I tried to use it, but found that it didn't seem to cover the grammar in a way that was easy to switch back and forth between this book, and the primary text book of Wheelock's Latin. ... Read more

I like the structure of the book and how it guides you to learn the ecclesiastical Latin language. What irritates me is there are no answer keys at the end of each exercises. You don't know if you made a mistake or not. This will totally leave you in the dark. SED LUX LUCEAT IN TENEBRIS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from the Publisher
This second year Latin course supposes the previous study of "Latin Grammar," by the same authors.

It is intended for students who can devote only two years to the study of Latin and who must by prepared to read intelligently Latin textbooks of philosophy, theology, and canon law. Therefore the vocabularies, word studies, exercises, and connected passages have been selected with this practical purpose in mind.

The first half of the book is based on philosophical texts; the second half is drawn from the works of theology and from the Cod of Canon Law. At the end of the volume is a vocabulary of 3,000 words, which may serve the purpose of a concise dictionary. 270 pages, PB. ... Read more

Product Description
This long-awaited volume provides an answer key to the drills and exercises contained in each of the units of John F. Collins's bestselling A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin. Written for those charged with the responsibility of teaching the Latin of the church, the primer aims to give the student--within one year of study--the ability to read ecclesiastical Latin. Thirty-five instructional units provide the grammar and vocabulary, and supplemental readings offer a survey of church Latin from the fourth century to the Middle Ages. Included is the Latin of Jerome's Bible, of canon law, of the liturgy and papal bulls, of scholastic philosophers, and of the Ambrosian hymns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin Answer key for Collins
Book was exactly wahat was advertised and expected. It is very helpful. Purchase process was fast and easy. Price was good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Answer Key for Eccl Latin
Good to have for Eccl Latin as opposed to Classical Latin.Anyone who is interested in learning what Church Fathers have written, this is essential.Languages capture the essences of what the original writer writes. This is the best to offer short of taking a class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Answer Key!
This answer key is a wonderful companion to the Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin Text.It is great for self study as it gives the student a feeling of accomplishment knowing immediately that he or she is translating appropriately. The answer key is easy to use and is VERY COMPLETE.It is rare indeed to find a complete answer key, even to the simple exercises. With this supplement, home study of Ecclesiastical Latin becomes fun and easy!!Great Book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
Anybody who is serious about studying the Collins text should buy this answer key book. While studying the Collins book, I would always check my answers with this key and it proved invaluable how much learning I did from my mistakes. Thanks to the answer key I was able to learn the points which I had overlooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Ecclesiastical Latin Primer
I am currently a student in an MA program in theology and although Latin is not a required language to undertake, it may be useful in post-graduate studies or research. John Collins' Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin is an outstanding resource to use in preparation for more formal studies in the language. When used in conjunction with the Answer Key to the primer, prepared by John R. Dunlap, the student has at their disposal all that is required to grasp the basic concepts of Latin grammar and pronunciation. It is also advisable to purchase a good, but inexpensive Latin dictionary. Currently, at least three students at my school of theology are using these resources in preparation for small group tutoring in the Fall semester. If you are willing to devote an hour a day to these volumes, you will be much better prepared for formal study in Latin. I would also recommend these two books as textbooks for undergraduate Latin instruction.Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book and wonderful seller
I am a latin teacher and many persons have asked me to buy used latin books for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow what I deal I got!
We paid for the book as used very good, but it actually is new or at least looked like it.Fantastic price. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Salvete!
I found this series, the 4th edition, to be especially informative because of the inclusion of history and culture of the time period, in English, as well as colour photographs.

As for the format of the book, I found it to be an easy read.Almost every stage begins with line drawings ("cartoons"), which introduces grammar, characters and sets the "stage" for what is to follow. Then there are a number of stories in each stage; proved for fun group quiz games (EUGE!). At the end of each story new vocabulary is included. Also there are vocabulary checklists, which you should know, at the end of the stage. Sometimes, the vocabulary at the end of the stories appears in the checklists further along in book. If this becomes a problem, my suggestion would be to make flashcards for each of the stages (proven study aid).

I do think that an improvement to later editions would be to include an English-Latin dictionary of the words used within the book, as well as pronunciation. Yet, nothing that an external English-Latin = Latin-English dictionary could not handle.

Valete!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book!
I took Latin I and II using the Ecce Romani series. When I switched schools, I had to switch to using the hardcover Cambridge Latin Course Unit 3 book for Latin III. It is a very poorly written textbook. The new vocabulary for each chapter is not put together very well in a way that makes it easy to learn. Since there are many little stories in each chapter, as opposed to the one big one and occasional second enrichment reading in the Ecce Romani books, there is vocab under each story. They tried to make a vocabulary list at the end of each chapter, but it never contains all the vocabulary listed under each story. The Ecce Romani books do a much better job of condensing the vocabulary and putting it all in one place, making it easier to learn. The Cambridge books are very confusing to look at and read because only proper nouns are capitalized. The back sections of the Cambridge books also only contain a Latin-English dictionary, so you're out of luck if you want to look up what an English word translates to in Latin. The Ecce Romani books contain both an English-Latin and Latin-English dictionary. The Ecce Romani series also does a much better job of explaining the grammar you learn each chapter. All the Cambridge books do is give you an example, not actually telling you how to form it in a sentence. The Ecce Romani books also have more challenging practice problems, and more of them, than the Cambridge books. On a more artistical note, the Ecce Romani books are much more interesting to look at, with color pictures that don't look like quick sketches, like the black and white Cambridge pictures do.
DO NOT buy the Cambridge series books. The books are very poorly written. The Ecce Romani series is a a much better Latin textbook series, which I highly recommend for anyone studying or planning on studying Latin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my bacon.
In traveling throughout Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile this book taught me local words specific to countries that really helped. Buying the new version for a trip to Colombia. Highly recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars It got me through OK
I was in Guatemala for nine days and found this phrasebook to be helpful especially when I anticipated certain situations, read up on it in the book and memorized some key phrases beforehand. I like that it's organized by situation: going to a restuarant, haggling in the marketplace, dealing with the police, etc. The translation dictionary is decent but if you go exploring in areas outside major cities, some of the words used (such as certain foods) you may not see in there but that could be because there really isn't an English word for it. My blackberry served as a decent back up in those situations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Caution - this is not the right phrase book for Mexico!
First I bought a Berlitz Spanish phrase book, only to get home and discover that it was for Spain. Then I bought this Lonely Planet phrase book which says it is for "Latin America."However, buried in the small print somewhere inside, it says it is NOT for Mexico and that Lonely Planet publishes a specific phrase book for Mexico.I wish that information had been on the cover. So I am giving it 3 stars for poor labelling.Having said that, I took it to Mexico anyway (because I couldn't find a Mexico specific phrase book), and for the most part, it got me through just fine.I looked at dozens of phrase books and what I liked about Berlitz and Lonely Planet is that they are color coded, which to me, made them much easier to use. What I liked about Lonely Planet over Berlitz is it includes outdoor/active phrases about pursuits like kayaking, bicycling, mountain climbing, camping, etc.I bought both of these books in bookstores (sorry, Amazon)- amazing that here in the States where we share a border with Mexico, none of the 3 bookstores I checked had Spanish phrase books for Mexico.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book
For every significant trip out of country, I've picked up a copy of the pertinent Lonely Planet Phrasebook and I have yet to be disappointed. I purchased two of the Latin American Spanish edition prior to a recent trip to Honduras. As with other Lonely Planet Phrasebooks, this one includes basic pronunciation and grammar, phrases organized by category, short dictionaries in both languages, and cultural commentary. While they aren't comprehensive in their vocabulary, they are compact and can easily be carried in a pocket. Unless you plan to really dig in and learn the language, my personal opinion is that one of these books is all you need to get by.

For me these books have also provided a great way to connect with local speakers. I have handed my copy to new friends more than once so they could look up phrases or words to communicate with me. When traveling to a location where you don't speak the language (in this case, Spanish), these phrasebooks combined with a smile and a good sense of humor will demonstrate a real desire to communicate in the local tongue, get you through many common situations, and ultimately help enrich your travel experience.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not satisfied
this book would be more useful if it was basically a dictionary instead of breaking down info by subject.you are not always in a situation that defines the word you are looking for by subject...takes too long to look up the word or phrase you want to say. ... Read more
