Product Description
Trapped in the Landslide is the life story of a fifty-something year old man who appeared to have everything - a gorgeous wife, two sons, decent job, social standing - the lot. It was never apparent to others that he was missing vitally important elements to his life. The love of his mother. The company of his brother. The name of his father. Brought up by adoptive parents who handled his questions about his birthmother badly, he embarked on a journey of self-destruction that was to lead to behaviour that ultimately sent him to prison. Caught up in Operation Ore, the UK police operation to root out downloaders of child pornography, the self-destruction plan seemed perfect. The suicide attempt failed because of love from his wife, sons and friends he never knew he had. Original documents are reproduced wherever possible. Contemporaneous notes are also presented in this book which makes no attempt to justify or excuse the author's activity. The depth of love, friendship and good old-fashioned humanity he found in those who stood by him (nearly everyone who knew the full story) meant he had to learn a new skill. How to be loved. The cover of the book shows how he saw himself. Living on an island, surrounded by bright lights and fireworks to make people think he was a good man. But the house in the middle was, he thought, so disgusting that no-one was allowed near - not even his wife. The title refers to the feeling of being trapped in a life that he often wanted to end. Landslide is the name of the American website that led to his demise - then rebirth. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Software for Engineering Control of Landslide and Tunnelling Hazards offers software solutions to problems of hazard control of landslides in highly seismic hilly areas and tunnels in complex geological formations. It is complementary to the authors' book on Rock Mass Classification.
Chapters on practical knowledge of both landslide and tunneling hazards, and behavior of rock joints and rock masses are presented for preparation of realistic input data. The emphasis is on proper design of remedial measures and not on rigorous analysis. There are 18 practical and field-tested software packages on landslide in soil and rock (Part 1) and 6 packages on tunnels (Part 2) along with source programs, user manuals and solved examples. The computer programs on back analysis of rock/ soil slopes are useful to analyze shear strength parameters along potential failure surfaces. A special feature of these programs/ codes is approximate estimation of the dynamic settlement of slopes during earthquakes the computer programs on tunnels/ shafts are equally simple to use for on-the-spot design of supports with shotcrete/SFRS and rock bolts. The program on squeezing deals with the most challenging problem of tunneling in weak rocks. The chapter on subsidence due to coal mines is based on extensive field research.
Software for Engineering Control of Landslide and Tunnelling Hazards serves both the international academic and professional civil and mining engineering communities, and is also an excellent tool for those working and studying in the field of engineering geology. ... Read more

Well-known and acclaimed for their fast pace and rich local color, adventure thrillers by the classic action writer are presented here in double doses, each volume including special bonus materials

High Citadel: When Tim O'Hara's plane is hijacked and forced to crash land in the middle of the Andes, his troubles are only beginning. A heavily armed group of communist soldiers intent on killing one of his passengers—an influential political figure—have orders to leave no survivors. Isolated in the biting cold of the Andes, O'Hara's party must fight for their lives with only the most primitive weapons. Landslide: Bob Boyd is a geologist, as resilient as the British Columbia timber country where he works for the powerful Matterson Corporation. But his real name and his past are mysteries—wiped out by the accident that nearly killed him. Then Boyd reads a name that opens a door in his memory: Trinavant—and discovers that Bull Matterson and his son will do almost anything to keep the Trinavant family forgotten forever. Included as a bonus is the previously unpublished short story "My Old Man's Trumpet," about a New Orleans music shop owner.

Product Description
Landslides occur in all geographic regions of the nation in response to a wide range of conditions and triggering processes that include storms, earthquakes, and human activities. Landslides in the United States result in an estimated average of 25 to 50 deaths annually and cost $1 to 3 billion per year. In addition to direct losses, landslides also cause significant environmental damage and societal disruption. This report reviews the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Landslide Hazards Mitigation Strategy, which was created in response to a congressional directive for a national approach to reducing losses from landslides. Components of the strategy include basic research activities, improved public policy measures, and enhanced mitigation of landslides. The NRC report commends the USGS for creating a national approach based on partnerships with federal, state, local, and non-governmental entities, and finds that the plan components are the essential elements of a national strategy. The report recommends that the plan should promote the use of risk analysis techniques, and should play a vital role in evaluating methods, setting standards, and advancing procedures and guidelines for landslide hazard maps and assessments. The NRC panel suggests that substantially increased funding will be required to implement a national landslide mitigation program, and that as part of a 10-year program the funding mix should transition from research and guideline development to partnership-based implementation of loss reduction measures. ... Product Description

This book brings together state of the art, peer reviewed, papers on shear physics at the meso-scale in earthquake and landslide mechanics and is authored by leading international scientists. The Identification of meso-scale phenomena occurring between microscopic and continuum length scales has been one of the most exciting developments in the last decade in understanding shear between material interfaces as well as particulate systems and is considered as the bridge between the two length scales for studying material response. This area or research has broad applications to the fields of earth sciences and geo-engineering, with immediate bearing on our understanding of earthquake and landslide mechanics, two geological processes that pose great risk to man kind worldwide.

Product Description
Chittagong is the second largest city & major Portcity of Bangladesh. Due to its port and otherfacilities the people of rural areas are alwaysagglomerated in the city for employmentopportunities. Rural to urban migration comprises amajor proportion of the urban workforce, but most ofthe migrants cannot afford to buy land in saferareas, find few or no alternate formal settlements, and no government programs to provide shelter to thepoor segment of urban population. The unequaldistribution of resources, the marginalization ofsegments of the population and informal activities, and their exclusion from planned and serviced areas,is what forces people on unsafe sites; and thenvulnerability is a consequence. So from thisstandpoint an appreciable strategy is necessary torevive the reduction of landslide vulnerability anddevelop a sustainable and integrated urbanlivelihood approach that would integrate measuresfor reducing poverty by reducing risks fromdisasters. ...
